The song was about Euro 96 being held in the UK. First major tournament since 66. It was never about the trophy coming home. Because England is not the trophy's home and never has been.

Will people please stop saying "is it coming home" etc. It makes no sense, and sounds stupidly arrogant to foreigners.

The slogan was used before the song. I went to conference looking ahead to the tournament and 'it's coming home' was the tagline on the materials handed out, as you say, as it was the first tournament in England since 66. It does seem to have developed another meaning in subsequent years.

Exactly. That's the point. Football. The game. The tournament. Came home in 1996.

Not a trophy. Never about the trophy. We would be utter muppets to claim that the trophy's home is here. Not what anyone normal understood the song to be at the time. Its been inanely subverted and its irritating.

That's precisely what I said...

Its constantly used in the other context though. Its coming home = we are winning and bringing the trophy back. And most people younger than about 45 seem to think thats the meaning.

We literally invented football in England and we sent it around the world. It all started here. We should feel superior because none of this would be going on without us English inventing the game, codifying the rules and running the first League. It was English people going to Brazil and Argentina managing teams and spreading the gospel of football.

Same in Europe, Juventus started as a Cricket club that needed something to do in the winter.
