Can we just deal with this "coming home" nonsense once and for all? 18:06 - Jul 7 with 4399 viewsredrickstuhaart

The song was about Euro 96 being held in the UK. First major tournament since 66. It was never about the trophy coming home. Because England is not the trophy's home and never has been.

Will people please stop saying "is it coming home" etc. It makes no sense, and sounds stupidly arrogant to foreigners.

Good point.

Also, it's gravity (and maybe other physics stuff) that's got the world in motion, not love.

AND - not everyone in England does like vindaloo.

Absolute minefield, this.

Not only those but even though Craig and Charlie will undoubtedly have covered thousands of miles on foot in their lives I bet The Proclaimers have never walked five hundred miles in one go.

Poll: To make him more acceptable what should Gary O'Neill change his middle name to ?

To be fair, they say that they "would" rather than they "have".
Probably lying though.

Just like all those singers who say they'd go to the moon and back.

And I very much doubt Lisa Stansfield has been all around the world, although I do accept that she potentially hasn't found her baby.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Who cares what it sounds like to foreigners?

It's taken on its own meaning now and it's frankly just a bit of fun.

Oh yawn, who cares?

If it triggers self-righteous puritans, then that's good enough reason alone to carry on singing it.

Sing it because you enjoy it. Sing it because you support the team. Sing it to get yourself in the mood for a game. Sing it because of what it means to you and to those around you. Sing it in excitement. Sing it for good reasons. Don’t sing it because you want to annoy people. That is just pathetic.

It's an English anthem, we're quite a self depreciating nation, it was a song sung by two comedians, it's hardly a Ludwig van Beethoven masterpeice.

Just take it for what it is, a bit of fun, a bit of a poke in the eye to ourselves, it's been sung for 40 years and now you're taking umbrage?

I'd concentrate your ire at other more important things like Freezers breaking down in supermarkets or overrunning gas works.

I think you are right in a sense, but the rest of the song is about England's potential to win and therefore the whole song has taken on that meaning.

I know for a fact that foreign fans do think it is arrogant (Croatians especially hated it in 2018) but I think most England fans appreciate it is self-deprecating rather than a genuine thought that it's our divine right to win tournaments.

And while we're at it, let's ban the use of the "Finest/Greatest football team the World has ever seen" chant for any team who are demonstrably NOT the finest/greatest football team the World has ever seen, shall we?

Re Lisa Stansfield.

Have you considered the possibility that:-

a) Father Christmas let her borrow his sleigh and herd of reindeer - he hardly ever uses it himself

or

b) Lisa Stansfield is Father Christmas?

At this point if Lisa still hasn't located her baby I think someone needs to contact Child Services

Do you think all song lyrics are literal?

Do you wonder why Freddie Mercury was never arrested despite confessing to killing a man (scaramoosh)?

Do you actually think Whitney will always love you?

Do you think Lionel Richie can actually dance on a ceiling?

Regarding the somewhat niche turn this thread has taken on Lisa Stansfield...I've looked on Wikipedia and :

'Her most recent album Deeper was released on 6 April 2018. In June 2018, following a string of sold-out tour dates in Europe, Stansfield announced her North American Tour, which began in October 2018...Stansfield also toured Europe and North America in 1990 in support of the album [Affection], and eventually released the Live! All Around the World home video...In 1994, Stansfield toured Japan and the UK'

So it is quite possible that Stansfield has been all around the World, albeit some years after she claimed that she had perfformed the feat.

An entirely different matter is Morten Harket and bandmates, as we all know from watching grim rain soaked murder scenes on 'Wallender', 'The Bridge' and 'The Killing', the sun does not always shine on TV.

The shrink wrapped cucumber is an evil that needs to be stamped out.

To begin with i just don't understand why a cucumber needs to be wrapped?
Why can't it just be sold loose as jah intended?

Then there is the whole rotten cucumber in wrapping issue that you rightly highlighted. Attempting to squeeze a rotten, mushy cucumber from its wrapping into the compost is a horror that I'd be happy to never perform again.

I've frequently heard musicians/songwriters, when an interviewer asks them what the meaning is behind the lyrics to their most famous song, 99% of the time the musician will reply "it's not for me to explain, different listeners hear different things and can interpret it how they see fit, etc, etc."
