| Hosepipe ban incoming for Suffolk 09:13 - Jul 10 with 3576 views | Dubtractor | Weather has been stupid again this year. The garden looks in a pretty desperate state, and the lack of rain makes the whole gardening thing feel like much harder work than it should, with pretty depressing results. | |

| Hosepipe ban incoming for Suffolk on 09:31 - Jul 10 with 2392 views | buoyant | It's in the whole of the Anglian Water region. Pretty desperate stuff, the last hosepipe ban was 2014 I think. There was a call to arms last night for additional resources in the Huntingdon area, as local water storage was so low that there was a potential that bottled water may have to been distrubuted to vulnerable households. Despite Anglian being one of the better water companies on leakage performance, they still lose 200 million litres a day our of the network. Privatisation working well eh ... | |

| Hosepipe ban incoming for Suffolk on 10:14 - Jul 10 with 2225 views | Trequartista | This is disgraceful. It didn't stop raining in the Autumn and Winter just gone with flooding everywhere and its bone dry in the Summer. That's ideal isn't it? You collect the water when it rains so you have enough in the Summer. In fact i distinctly remember them saying in years when we didn't have much winter rain that when it does rain in the summer it's not much good because it doesn't soak into the ground so it needs to rain in the winter. What the hell are this company doing? They need to be nationalised. Having a private company with no competition is a disaster. [Post edited 10 Jul 10:15]

Doesn't help that we stopped building reservoirs over the past 30+ years.

Hosepipe bans should be permanent. We should be preparing for the future by building our water storage and facilities. There is zero need for 99% of people to water their lawns.
| Hosepipe ban incoming for Suffolk on 10:29 - Jul 10 with 2146 views | BloomBlue | You should have been in Suffolk in the 70s when all we had was standpipes, we didn't even have water coming out of the tapes, that's nationalised water for you. Actually the problem is the lack of building new reservoirs. The population continues to increase but our building of new reservoirs hasn't kept pace. Its the old nimby issue, every time they apply for planning permission they get knocked back, 'it will impact nature' and worse 'we need housing there', what's of the point of new housing if we don't have sufficient water. Stopping leaks would help, but you'll always have leaks, the earth moves, pipes break. The last new reservoir build was 1992, over 30 years ago. Since then we're had numerous plans submitted by water companies only for the nimbies to overturn the plans. It should be classed as a national emergency and all planning opposition ignored by default, green space is lovely, as is houses, but reservoirs are better for us. | | | |

Whilst NIMBYs are a part of it, we basically stopped building as soon as privatisation happened. They're expensive and don't offer short term profits so they were never prioritised. https://www.newcivilengineer.c

What we are short of is a system that manages the abundance we get over the year. None of the water companies invest in the infrastructure, just take as higher dividends as possible for their investors.

We're not short of water in Britain, however, most of it is in the wrong parts of the island. Specifically, nowhere near London and the south-east. The consumption of that region is enormous - in what is also among the driest part of the country. Water-tables are falling, aquifers are being drained. Water is not easy to shift around over long distances. It's heavy, awkward and to make it flow you need a steady drop in altitude - or very expensive pumping stations. That's not water-company-profits money, it's national level spend-on-infrastructure-not-increased-defence levels of money. Quite apart from the delay, trouble and opposition such a project would face (see: HS2).

According to their own figures Anglian Water lose 185 million litres of water in leaks. PER DAY! That's just mind blowing, and apparently their target (set by ofwat i presume) is to "only" lose 192 millions litres of water a day. So they are doing really well. This country is just broken.

Yeh, and I have two kids playing football on it every night too so it's just dirt now! Did fill a paddling pool the other night so have plenty of supplies to use for a bit at least! Bought a nice new hose on Wednesday and got it all set up and now just have to look at it....! [Post edited 10 Jul 12:24]

The main problem is this "New reservoirs are expensive; they take a long time to construct and particularly to get through planning and environmental applications,” They take ages because local people keep objecting to them, pushing them out and out, forcing planning to be changed, costing more and more. Nationalising water companies isn't suddenly going to change the planning problems. They should be classed as critical and local objections overruled. Labour is basically doing that with the overhead Norwich to Tilbury cables, class it as critical and overrule local planning. Thames Water wanted to build a reservoir near Abingdon Reservoir, it was going to cost Thames Water around £1billion but that was rejected in 2011, because the local authority, 'quote' had concerns about the proposals, including the size of the carbon footprint of the construction project and the significant impact the reservoir would have on the landscape. Again we need the reservoirs, buy hey the local landscape is more important for the nimby.

And still no new reservoir for almost 30 years, but millions more people living in the region. Hartlepool are the only place to escape the ban in the Anglian water region [Post edited 10 Jul 12:45]

Personally don't see our recent weather as nice at all to be honest. Not good for humans, not good for nature. I love sunshine, don't get me wrong, but we've had had one brief rainy spell in 3 months. That's not good.

The issues around investment come from the folly of privatisation. However, moving water around the country is going to be a real problem with the sheer level of nimbyism that is on display in this country. There is a huge subset of people that would rather keep their view or have a bit less traffic than actually have things that will keep the country working over the much longer term. The planning alone to build a water transfer canal system would take decades given all the objections that would be raised. SB

| Hosepipe ban incoming for Suffolk on 13:53 - Jul 10 with 1473 views | wkj | I remember when we managed to get through a summer without being told to ration water every few years. Mind you, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. Every time I see Clacton on the television it seems suspiciously green. You do wonder if someone's diverted the lot down there for electoral purposes. Probably nothing in it of course. Just one of those coincidences, like potholes mysteriously disappearing in certain constituencies while the rest of us are told to let the lawn die for the greater good. Funny old world. | |
