I've enjoyed the World Cup, but there havent been any BIG matches. 15:04 - Jul 10 with 1367 viewsMarshalls_Mullet

Has the seeding spoiled the world cup a little?

The four top seeds are still in the tournament, and none of them have played a really decent team yet.

I guess Brazil, Portugal, Holland and Germany being shadows of their former selves hasnt helped, and Italy not even in the US.

There have been entertaining games, but there doesnt seem to have been any big dogs going up against each other.

It does feel a bit like that.

The semis and the final could be huge games though.

Argentina v England
France v Spain

Not taking getting past Norway for granted, that is going to be a very tough game keeping Haaland quiet. if Norway go through I could see them getting to the final. Argentina been far from convincing.

Huh?

France vs Morocco was 1st vs 6th in terms of rankings.

Mexico vs England was 10th vs 4th.

Portugal and Spain played each other in R16.

Agreed, thats the closest we've got.

But Portugal were hopeless this year due to Ronaldo.

Germany v Ecuador was the one i've probably enjoyed the most outside our games (missed the cape verde v argentina one). But 'big games' involving the top seeds haven't happened until now really apart from portugal v spain which was a bit of a let down. Less chance of it happening in the groups with 48 teams rather than 32.

Morocco have a few good players, but they just sit back and dont have any attacking threat.

They only just beat Scotland. Their ranking is nonsense, flattered by playing in AFCON.

The Mexico match was great, do they have any world class players? No.

Given the amount of matches that have taken place so far, the fact we are pointing towards France v Morocco and England v Mexico as prestige matches says it all.

Its been fun though, mainly due to the lower ranked teams.

Argentina are massively over rated, and havent played anyone yet. I would back us to beat them.

Im more worried about Norway due to the Haaland factor.

But yes, the semis should deliver the so called marquee matches.

.....that suggests the seedings have gone exactly how FIFA wanted.

That squad should have been brilliant to watch.

I would argue though they they were hopeless due to Martinez.

"France vs Morocco was 1st vs 6th in terms of rankings." - I was looking forward to this, but was a bit of a one-sided, damp squib in the end. Morocco were playing better than their ranking in early tournament, but were poor yesterday. Think the two injuries killed them. Great team, not such a great squad.

You're setting a high bar there.

We've seen 6th v 7th, 7th v 8th, 1st v 7th, 2nd v 9th and 2nd v 5th so far. Is that much different to normal?

If you discount Morocco and Portugal then rationally you are left with only four BIG teams in the tournament from the outset. Brazil scraped through WC qualifying after all and did well to survive Morocco's superior play in the group game. Poor case for ranking them ahead of either of the above. Then Italy can't qualify and Germany have been outside the top 8 for a while.

I'm not sure how this compares to previous World Cups - is it not normal to leave the top four seeds with breathing space from each other? Perhaps the change is that a few traditional names aren't very good currently, and France are too good for a top 8 team to look good against them.
