2700+ deaths linked to the heat this year.

https://www.independent.co.uk/

Anecdotally, where I am is as busy as the first two weeks of January.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Definitely shouldn't be out in this heat if you're doing drugs.

Ah yes, I love these 'modelling' studies, 'suggested' 'linked' 'estimated' but no actual hard evidence that a single person died as a direct result of warmer weather.

It's also interesting that all these alarmist stories about loss of life due to climate change fail to mention that far more lives are lost overall to extreme cold weather than extreme hot, so how many lives are being saved as a result of milder winters? I guess we will never know as they won't 'model' that one will they.

What "hard evidence" would you like? The study uses excess deaths which is a fairly standard way of showing an increase in deaths over the mean for a specific scenario. Not really right to try and poison the well in the way you have.

The second point It's worth noting that if it continues to get hotter it's likely the AMOC will cease to function as it has and we will get both extremely cold winters (much worse than now) and extremely hot summers.

On the milder winters point, it's possible you might be right for the UK but there are studies showing that deaths from excessive heat in Europe will far exceed any offsetting improvement in deaths from cold.

What point are you actually trying to make with regards to climate change?

Of course researchers also consider deaths attributed to cold conditions. They look at the impacts of all temperatures from empirical and modelling studies.

This reporting really isn't helping either:

"Nearly 2,500 articles about the extreme heat – when temperatures topped 37C, a record for the time of year – appeared in the UK’s nine main national daily media publications. But nearly three-quarters of them – about 72% – left out any mention of global heating or the climate, according to the analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU).

Even fewer pieces drew a link between the heatwave and government policies designed to tackle the climate crisis – less than one in 20 heatwave stories mentioned “net zero”.

DENIER: You're probably not an inherent moron, but you are occupying a moronic position. Will you stay defiantly there (as instructed or otherwise) as the world burns around you? Will you continue to resist? Are these things really not happening despite decades of overwhelming science? These are the questions you should be asking of yourself as a thinking animal, with the ability to read and to see.

https://ourworldindata.org/par

"Most temperature-related deaths happen in “moderately cold” conditions, not on extremely cold or hot days. It’s not because the mortality risk in this zone is the highest, but the amount of time spent there is.

Again, this is not what most of us would think of as “cold conditions”. In the UK, this would include the increased risk of dying on days with a temperature of 10°C or 15°C."

What point are you trying to make here? That it isn't hot? That people aren't known to die in hotter weather? That climate change isn't happening? That climate change is happening but it's not that bad because winters are milder (which they aren't predicted to be when the gulf stream fails)?

I'm really not sure.

Where I live in south Manchester we've spent the last 2-3 days engulfed in smoke and ash from the wildfires on the moors. This is not normal.

Ironic that the cyclist trying desperately to keep cool, him and his team are sponsored by a country that has made all its money on the back of burning fossil fuels.

Yeah i'm driving past it daily and its a horrible sight.

The only positive i'm taking is that the one from the other month near the Snake Pass, which was really bad, has mostly re-grown. These burning cycles are part of the natural way of things, but not to this extent, or this frequency, and definitely not started by fireworks.

I don't know if climate change is caused by human actions or not, but then, I'm not meant to know. I'm not a climate scientist. If we don't trust our experts, then all is lost.

I do wonder whether climate change deniers also thought that it was a load of far woke nonsense that CFCs created a hole in the ozone layer, and whether dumping a load of carbonic acid into the atmosphere did not cause acid rain?

If they did accept the experts on that, why is it so hard to accept the experts' explanation on climate change?

looks bad, but the few days raced have been outside France in the Barcelona area which skews it a lot, and the Pyrenees and Dordogne which can be bakey. When it gets to the Alpine mountains and North East France it should average down quite a bit. Though it should still be the highest figure on the chart. but an average of say 27.9 does not look so impressive as 32.4.

It's a guess not an actual body count. Modelling last year predicted 3039 linked deaths due to excessive heat periods, the actual count was 1504.
