We better get pretty active soon 14:32 - Jul 13 with 5331 viewsitfcsuth

Season begins in under 6 weeks, the squad is currently a long way from competing in the Premier League.

Pre season has begun, pre season camp begins next week, new manager, new players needed, in the space of less than 6 weeks.

It's looking like a big task right now.

I'd agree that if we don't see at least 2 new faces in by the end of this week (and progress on others) we're in a spot of bother. Radio silence from the club's media department since Emersonn joined feels a bit strange too.

I do think part of our issues are going to be getting the dead wood out of the building first. It's a tall order moving on the likes of Akpom, Ogbene etc. so early on in the window.

I agree. Must sign a couple of players this week. We can’t afford a slow start to the PL season and waiting for players to gel like we did in the championship last season.

But as you say, the squad looks bloated and we are probably trying to offload a fair few.

ANY business that loses it's management team and need to build a new staff in 6 weeks and make them productive are going to say it is not possible, that is what we are up against and we seem to have one bloke trying to do it all on his own.

Biggest issue will be that the usual natural dominoes re deals are taking longer to fall due to the World Cup. I wouldn't imagine shifting the likes of Ogbene or Akpom really makes a difference to the speed we bring players in. They will likely move later in the window for the best deal we can get and I doubt we will be precious about leaving them out of the 25 if needed in a worst case scenario.

Chill out. There's been about 5 transfer in the Premier League. Plenty of time and soon 3/4 will arrive in quick succession.

Think any will start to relax a bit when they do eventually start happening and we see who they are.

The last 10% can take time though if you are waiting for other deals to complete elsewhere in the transfer chain.

This does include 17 Premier League clubs that had good enough squads to stay up last year... we are not in that bracket.

I'd rather we wait for first choices, rather than end up with the like of KFP.

Our last foray in the transfer window in the PL resembled the last scene in the Crystal Maze.

Not sure if you've noticed, but there is this rather large football competition currently going on!

Hardly any transfers at all at the moment.

Next week will likely see things pick up.

You're going to be very disappointed!

Get Sunday's final out the way and then things will pick up.

I am a bit concerned about the lack of midfielder links, as you would think that we will need at least 2 more.

Apologies for being thick, but considering the 4 clubs left in the competition have players who we have no chance in getting, how and why does that effect things and why we need to wait until then to sign other players.

I accept there is probably something im not seeing so apologies in advance

I guess you still have players who have been at the WC that will need a rest prior to linking up with domestic sides. Often the top moves before the bottom in terms of clubs, players typically move up the pyramid to replace a void.

A very over simplified example:

If player A retires from Man City, Man City will look to replace with someone who has potential to step up (player B - mid team Prem equivalent), the mid tier team won’t sell until they have someone lined up, and that then goes down as far as you want. It causes delays with teams waiting for the big teams to make moves.

Now given most WC players are in the top teams, it makes the delay longer because teams have no idea who wants to stay/go or who fits in to plans.

We will be shopping in same window as mid-tier prem teams so as they wait for the big boys to move, that will delay us as well. We are in effect waiting for the big teams to sort themselves for the mid-tier prem sides before we get our main/big targets.

The first, and biggest, factor is that most transfers are part of a chain reaction that starts at the very top.

City sign Anderson, which frees up Forest to sign X, which then allows us to sign Y, and so the chain continues. The same applies to all the clubs at the top of the food chain, whose business will have been heavily impacted by the tournament, even now.

Secondly, most major leagues have a later start this summer and, with pre-season only just beginning, players can afford to wait and see what options materialise.

I’d agree you’d really want to be seeing 2 in by the end of the week, and we need to be really seeing activity on others as well.

It will be hard to move on some of the dead wood, but that’s the position we’ve put ourselves in as a football club, and it’s Ashton’s job to get to work on that.

6? Will need more likely double that to build a competitive squad.

Outgoings could be a number of many, realistically other than Davis, Matusiwa, O’Shea nobody is untouchable, I don’t think it would be a hindrance for anyone else to move on.

I’m not sure we’ll be shopping for too many out of the Argentina, France, England and Spain World Cup squads.

I’m not sure that it should have a huge impact on our business, feels more like a lazy excuse.

I asked ChatGPT about this, based on figures from 2010 to date.

Including loans made permanent, and excluding new contracts etc., these were the average numbers of signings made by the three promoted clubs, by 13/07, in each category of summer:

World Cup - 7
Euros - 9.75
No tournament - 12

On that basis, and having made one new signing and made two loans permanent, I'd say we're ahead of where we should be statistically for a WC summer.

Not a prophet, or a stone-age man; just a mortal with potential of a superman.

good article in the athletic today and its deffo been busier than that albeit quieter than normal. How many teams in the premier league other than us are potentially looking at bringing in 7-8 starting players and thinking it is going to be easy to hit the ground running if most miss the next 3 weeks?

We have a new manager and the players will have a clean slate with him. I'm not so sure we should be showing Akpom the door if we want to play with two up top on occasions.
O'Neil will have his own ideas and he may well have uses for some of the players that didn't fit for McKenna.
We will see.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
