This idea of targeting a "higher calibre of player" from Europe and further afield was a noble idea. Sadly, we've been out of the big time so long that none of these players know who we are and signing for Ipswich is a totally unappealing prospect. That's why we keep missing out on these players.
I'm not saying we close the door on the overseas recruitment, but with the season only six weeks away, we do need more quality in the door, and if that means signing one or two from the Championship just to get things going, then so be it. There will be decent players knocking about at the likes of Burnley, Wolves, Boro and Southampton. Doubt we'll be able to attract anyone from West Ham. Even must be a few at Leicester in League One who are worth a look.

There's feck all point signing players for the sake of signing players. I can't think of many in the Championship who are demonstrably better than what we've got already.

What makes you think that there are many players "knocking about" in the Championship (or even League One) that can do a better job?
Apart from a few obvious exceptions, that will go to teams in Europe, there's a reason why Burnley, Wolves etc aren't in the Prem.

Money tends to override "who are they?" for most players.
Did many know of Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham etc? Good (long-term) scouting will fill that "who are ya" gap. |  | | |

Without knowing where we are with conversations with players/clubs I think it's really difficult to judge this. The absence of links is making many people think that we're currently failing - and that may be the case - but the absence of noise doesn't definitely indicate that.
Apart from Wilson and Khalaili (whose move elsewhere has now fallen through and may decide he fancies a shot at the Prem with us) it's not like we've been linked with players who have chosen to go elsewhere.
We may also have conversations ongoing with players in the Championship but those links haven't been forthcoming either - so our strategy may be more balanced than you are indicating.
I think the fact that a lot of the journos who cover the Prem extensively are still out in the US covering the World Cup may also have a lot to do with the lack of firm links. [Post edited 14 Jul 16:42]

Players from lesser European leagues care very little about our lack of recent top flight action, just as they see no issue joining other yo-yo clubs like Burnley. The Premier League is the greatest shop window in the world, a season of decent performances in a team that struggles can still earn you an even bigger money move.
I'm sure our list includes both players from Europe and players from the Championship. We're in a really good position and I have no doubt that we'll start to see players in and out, in quantity, soon after the World Cup ends. |  | | |

Indeed, and plenty of other Premier League clubs have successfully recruited from Europe outside of the stellar leagues, and from less fashionable clubs in some of the bigger European leagues. |  | | |

It suggests there are others ahead of him on our list, who we maybe have made an approach for, and are trying to close.

Brentford purchased 3 players after promotion and one of those was Eriksen on a freebie. Yes they did bring some onloan. Brentford fans were shocked, they felt at best they only had 2 players from the Championship squad capable of playing in the Prem, they assumed the club were planning for relegation.
Thomas Frank felt different and believe he could develop their Championship squad to perform at PL level. Frank was right, by not bringing in loads of new players and develop the players he had they avoided relegation and now an established club.

Absolutely not, a total disaster. A road once travelled that lead you know where. If players don't know who we are, they can simply do a search, they'll soon find out. Given the clubs history and it's current status as a member of the most demanding, overall best quality league in world football, that should be all the info they need. And most are probably in inferior leagues and quite possibly at inferior clubs too. Patience is a watchword until July 29th and the proper pre season beginning.
