Tuchel says we went back 5 because we conceded too many crosses

Doesn't that happen as you've removed wide players for that extra defender?

From what I saw tonight, 100% we started allowing far more crosses after moving to a back 5.

That's what I thought, i can;t see how becoming a back 5 makes you concede less crosses, it just fills the box with to many defenders and you end up leaving spaces, kinda like zonal marking as you're not man marking your just plugging gaps, compared to two cbs marking two forwards

In my head im just thinking ok they are crossing from the right side, best option, bring on another right sided winger who can assist the left back to stop the crosses. Take kane off for watkins, mainoo for rice and ask mainoo to control outside the box and the messi roam,

i dunno, so so baffled

Is that also why Kane started playing on the edge of our box then?

Not if your wing backs aren't panicking and getting sucked into the middle.

Simply fell into the trap of assuming what worked before always works.

The Argies have huge quality (when they actually want to play) and there was a third of a game to go. It was pretty lazy decision making tbh.

We removed any threat on the counter. We might have lost.., but i’d have backed us with Watkins/Rogers/Saka/Rashford to score on the break.

James was gassed 15 mins before he came off, he couldn’t move, rice too.

A great ride tbf. We’ve had a blast, but it was there to be won .., Romero and Martinez, both on yellows and we removed all our pace and threat.

Tuchel got 90% right, but that was SO what Southgate got hammered for, not taking risks when there’s a chance to kill a game.

We would have scored again on the break .., they’d gone all out attack .., but he couldn’t ever take Kane off and that with a million defenders had zero counter potential.

I’m waiting by the phone. The FA have my number. You don’t win FPL doubles and not make at least a shortlist (I hope).

My 50 page thesis on what went wrong is already being drafted by AI .., both Benson and Hedges can expect a call up. One Ipswich player per squad is my promise, but only if Mats has a granny from Scunthorpe. Sigh.

Exactly. Thats just managerial guff.

He took a team that already had a negative mindset and made them more negative.

Frustrating that despite the hydration breaks being absolute shite we actually had one at the ideal time. Only one message was needed at that break and it was to get them to show leadership and push the defensive line higher up the pitch. If we got undone by some skill then fine. But I was so surprised nothing changed after that and I could not see much evidence of players telling each other to push up.

Oh well. Found our ceiling again.

I wish we'd never gone in front, from that point on it was one-way traffic and we looked inept. The substitutions made it worse. Well done Tuchel.

Am I wrong but towards the end did we not have 6 defenders on? Folks are saying 5.

D. Spence
M. Guéhi
J. Stones (until 96)
D.Burn (82)
N. O'Reily (82)
A. Konsa (72)

There was at least 10 minutes of 6 defenders!!!!

We seemed to concentrate too much on defending the cross after it came into the box rather than stopping it at source.

It might have made sense if they were dominating us aerially but I'm not sure they were, they were just putting the ball in with brilliant quality. Stop the crosses (and obviously give us some kind of out ball somehow).

Even before then Anderson was dropping in to make a back 6 at times. It was flipping between a back 5 and back 6 almost constantly. I don’t think abandoning the midfield was the greatest idea lol

This is what I didn't get, the area they are probably strongest and we just let them have the midfield and seemed content to try and soak up pressure for 30 odd minutes.

There were so many warning signs.

How about the idea that you can't concede crosses if you've got the ball? No attempt to turn the game round in terms of getting on the ball and being sensible with it.

Yep.

And if Tuchel and his team had done their research, they would have seen that in Argentina's last game, when they went 2-0 down, Messi moved out to the right and started peppering the box with crosses and working the ball wide rather than centrally. They were relentless and it got them 3 late goals.

What did Messi do when we went 5 at the back...moved across and exploited the space. The best player ever, and we give him exactly what he wants. 2 Messi assists later and we're out of the World Cup.

Exactly this. We were doing a decent enough job of keeping Messi out of the game up until we scored. The shape change just gave him and others space around the edge of our box. It was purely inviting trouble.

Gordon and Spence were doubling up on Messi and Gordon offered an out ball.
Messi was nearly redundant while that was happening.
