That’s obviously one of the biggest games in our history and I’m completely shocked at our approach after going 1-0 up.
Not least because Argentina have shown you what they are all summer. They’re not a side full of world class players, they’ve got the GOAT and a team that will give everything to win. We had them fairly quiet and they were worried, they wanted a scrap because they were scared of our pace. Their defense is bang average at best.
To invite that kind of pressure is utterly mind blowing. To give Messi that entire pocket of space and sit in a bank of 10, what on earth was he thinking?! He was brought in for the very reason to make the right calls in this scenarios when the lights were shinning brightest. The irony is, it was more negative than Southgate in the end. I’m not sure if the Azteca got in his brain and he thought we could see it out but it was awfully clear we weren’t going to. We had ten men in Mexico FFS.
Has there EVER been a game where it was painfully obvious they were going to at least get back to 1-1 and likely win than what we were watching? I wasn’t even excited on 84 minutes, there was about a 5% chance we were going to see that out.
We needed runners, we needed players with the ability to get on the ball, we needed bravery, we didn’t need to chuck on Konsa (with 30 minutes left) and Burn and hope for the best. Every single time we ran at them they were in trouble. We should have kept pressing and brought the legs on. Both of their CBs on a booking.
We literally opened the door, it was like shooting and crossing practice, they won’t believe their luck.
Been lucky enough to go to quite a few of the England games in the tournament and I thought he made some good subs throughout but tonight in the biggest moment, it was all too familiar.
I’m not sure he can even stay for the next Euros, that was our opportunity and we basically waived the white flag, to those fookers as well of all nations. Could have got to our first World Cup final in 60 years and ended Messi’s int career tonight.
Gutted and completely baffled at the same time. People will be talking about this coaching performance for a long long time.

I’m less interested in that tbh, a lot of top nations have looked pretty average at times, esp Argentina. The plan was for pace behind Kane and width, so I can see why Palmer wasn’t really his answer as a floating 10 and it also allowed Bellingham to thrive.
it’s about finding a way to win and if you have to do it ugly or come back against an inferior team, so be it. We had options to make positive changes today and he folded.

Who knows what they were all told to do but Pickford kicked the ball straight back to them 3 times in very quick succession after we scored. We obviously couldn’t get out because of the changes the manager made, against a team in the top couple in the world with the ball in the final third. Absolute madness. Or to avoid giving Fernandez shooting opportunities. He’d had two efforts in just the few minutes leading up to their first goal. There was no awareness of the threat he was causing and we quite happily gave him the space to have another go. Just like giving Messi all the space he wanted to ping balls in at will.
It wasn’t even as if we looked assured defending the lead either. They’d have had at least another 3 goals if not for the woodwork and Pickford. All of us on here saw it unravelling in real time and were saying it was suicide. And that was from about 60 mins.
Losing isn’t so much the problem as throwing the towel in and hiding being the sofa while calling for our mummy lol. It was men v boys for the last 40 mins. The sort of performance you expect from a non-league side against a PL team in the cup. |  |
