That when we get another striker in, GON will use Akpom as third choice striker and move on George Hirst.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.

I have a hunch Akpom will be loaned somewhere like Birmingham in the last week of the window.

Felt like Hirst obviously and Azon got plenty of time last season in the role. Akpom barely played there - maybe scored when he did? Think with the poor conversion rate last season he should have had a bit more time there.

Hirst is off regardless, I really want Akpom to come good but can imagine we have a summer akin to Cook's demolition job more than any of the recent windows.

That's why I think Akpom will stay. We have Emersonn and probably another striker coming in. Can't see anyone being prepared to join as a third choice striker.

Hirst suited McKenna's system but Akpom is the better finisher of the two so I see GON keeping him at the club.

For someone who'd scored 29 in a season not too long ago, he seemed to have a pretty shocking sense of where the goal last year was whether he was played at 9 or 10 - his conversion rate was dreadful too (and that's allowing him the goal he touched in from the line when it was going in anyway). I'd have thought he'd need to be having a pretty earth-shattering pre-season to be in with much of a chance.

I originally thought George might be third choice. But looking at the calibre of our signings so far, I’m no longer convinced Hirst or Akpom are viewed as being even remotely good enough.

I think we will sell him to the Championship and he will have a decent career with the odd promotion.

Type of one I hope we get a sell on for just in case.

The next striker addition will be crucial, going to be a big ask for Emersonn just to hit the ground running in the PL whatever we paid for him. An experienced top level striker is going to be required, might have to pay a lot of wages for one but needs must.

We also need to drop big money on a proper starting CM more in the box to box role and a like for like for Matusiwa amongst a tone of other things of course.

I’m hoping a sale of Philogene above 30M allows us to spend 200M.

Depends who in the champ is willing to take on a load of his wages. His agent played a blinder, I can’t imagine what we are paying him in a promotion clause when he was warming the bench.

Some weird business last summer and this one had panic written all over it, this year feels much more encouraging thus far.

I was thinking about Akpom's golden boot season.

Without hindsight, had we been in for 29 goals for Boro Akpom or zero goals Blackburn Hirst in January 2023. I doubt there is a single person in here who would have chosen Hirst.

Obviously Hirst suited the way McKenna played.

Well, if he isn't going to be in our squad then loaning him out for free is still better than nothing as we can include clauses for goals and potential promotion etc.

I'm sure someone is going to be willing to pay something, even if it's a fraction. Hopefully he has a good season and we get some money back from a fee.

Quite right. What a weird trajectory, most of a career scoring roughly one every five games, other than two seasons scoring one in two without even playing as an out-and-out striker, for no particularly identifiable reason. Even more extreme than Daryl Murphy's brief spell in god mode.

I’d be amazed if either are in the first team picture come the start of the season. However, peak Akpom is far better than peak Hirst. His 29 goal season and subsequent transfer to Ajax is testament to that. So perhaps, if he shows something in pre-season and Gary O’Neil likes the look of him, then who knows, we may see one of the biggest redemption arcs in the club’s recent history!

I hope Hirst stays and Akpom goes. Hirst has contributed so much to our team in recent years but Akpom has done almost nothing. Think George deserves another crack at the PL as an impact sub but it depends on who else we can bring in in the striker dept. Chuba goes down as one of the worst McKenna signings for me.

Hirst was good the last time we were in the prem and deserves another chance. Think we'll spend big on another striker though so it will depend if he's happy being 3rd choice.

Akpom looked way off it last season and that was in the championship.

He’ll be sold in the window.

Hirst is 27, if he goes to the champ and tears it up good chance he moves again given the premium on strikers so I’d expect us to protect that.

Totally agree with you. For all his credentials he contributed very little and it was clear that KmcK saw him as the last option in attack. The sooner he is gone the better.

I heard from a reliable source we tried quite agressively to move Hirst on in January - I guess the lack of a replacement meant we kept him around in the end.

So while this wouldn’t surprise me, I struggle to see anybody taking any of our second string guys on permanent deals this summer, now they’re on prem wages.
