📰 Scherpen to Ipswich, it's practically done! 💛💙
Our goalkeeper and the English club have reached an agreement, but Union had to settle for an offer below 15M€...
Chambaere's start against Lille was therefore no coincidence.

Union and Ipswich Town are getting closer to an agreement over Kjell Scherpen. The Brussels club wants a fair compensation for their goalkeeper, especially due to the sell-on clause with Brighton.
Whats it say? (looks like it behind a Dutch pay wall for me)
'Scherpen sees Ipswich and Union approaching deal after earlier asking price of 15 million'
Union Sint-Gillis and Ipswich Town are very close to an agreement on the transfer of Kjell Scherpen. This is reported by Het Belang van Limburg, which also comes up with more financial details about the switch of the 26-year-old Dutchman to the Premier League PhD candidate. Last weekend it came out that Ipswich Town had opened the hunt on Scherpen. The Tractor Boys have also strengthened with Kayne van Oevelen, but he is mainly caught up with a view to the future. Scherpen, on the other hand, is the intended number one on Portman Road.
However, the goalkeeper was still in the waiting room for a while due to the negotiations between the clubs. Union Sint-Gillis initially relied on a transfer fee of about fifteen million euros, partly because it itself has to give up a significant percentage of a future resale to Brighton & Hove Albion, Het Belang van Limburg knows. That amount will not be met, but both clubs are on the way to a deal.
Scherpen was already absent in Union's friendly match against Lille on Saturday, which further fueled the transfer rumors. The ex-goalkeeper of FC Emmen and Ajax grew into one of the most important players among the Brussels team last season. In 43 games, Scherpen kept the zero no less than 21 times. In total, he conceded 38 goals at the Belgian club.
Union previously paid about two million euros to take him over. So now a big profit is ahead.
He seems to be well-regarded and have a decent background.... but is anyone else worried by him being 6ft 9 (2.06m)? That's Tomas Holy-like. And, whilst it's important to be big and imposing, being too tall has it's drawbacks. Lack of agility and getting down to shots. I guess the Belgium league is a decent standard, but I remember Holy.

I don't think one can base an entire analysis on tall keepers based on another single tall keeper who has played all his career at a lower standard.

That was one of a couple of things that stood out to me from the videos i've seen. I remarked to myself that one of the pros was that he DOES get down well for such a big fella (unlike Holy)
The other was that he did have a tendency to parry shots back into the area which was a negative but you could make reels of all goalkeepers doing that I guess.
Unfortunately I know little about his ability to catch the ball from crosses/corners or his footwork but you would hope we've done our homework.

The parrying rather than holding is very much a European goalkeeper thing and frustrates me as an ex goalkeeper myself, but its something that can be improved and he isn't that old.

Not at all, when I saw how tall he was it made me feel better about the signing, I’ve never heard of him tbh but being that tall is a positive imo.

Can’t wait to see him high claiming everything!
He doesn't seem to be high on the rankings for high claims, but that could be skewed massively by the way they play or that teams simply don't put the ball high as they know that's a strength so avoid it.
Whatever happens, we've got a big presence in goal and spending a fair bit, so hopefully the lad is at least as good as Muric, but not as batsh*t crazy and a better fit in the squad.
Looking forward to him arriving.
