In addition to what Lowhouse wrote, there is perhaps also an ignorance as to the risks.
The English Channel is one of the most dangerous waterways in the world. Highly tidal, with associated currents. Extremely variable weather, cold water, significant danger of exposure. Very heavy shipping traffic, chance of being run down. Tricky landing beaches, with cliffs or steep shingle. A very different beast to the Med, for all its greater distance and notorious sudden storms.
But someone hailing from the Middle East or Sub-Saharan Africa may not be at all aware of that - and I doubt the traffickers would inform them. |
That's a really good point - if they've made it safely across the 80-odd miles of Mediterranean, then the 20-mile English Channel would probably look like a mere formality. |  |

Whoever is supplying these boats has a lot of blood on their hands - what a way to make money. How have they been able to operate for so long. |
I'm going to simplify this a bit but containers from China loaded with dinghies on their manifest should surely ring bells wherever they come to port. It's only recently that German warehouses and storage facilities with dinglies coming from Turkey have had a bit of a crackdown.
It's generally held by all Eurpean nations that migrant smuggling and people trafficking is a terrible crime but when BBC journalists can track down the ring leaders and Interpol and national organised crime police departments don't then I'm led to think that the talk doesn't equal the action. |  | | |

What’s ‘the other side’ though? If it’s demonising these people all as criminals or only ‘fighting age men’ or echoing whatever the latest soundbite from the far right is, then yeah it’s likely it’s being driven by racism. Yet polls have shown that the vast majority of people think we should be a country that offers asylum to those fleeing persecution, war, etc. The public also over-estimate immigration, the number of asylum seekers in the UK and the numbers seeking asylum each year. So education is probably a good place to start. |
