| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? 07:12 - Aug 3 with 5580 views | NthQldITFC | The Met Office is going to announce today that this July in England has seen less than half of the rainfall of the previous record driest July in the last 190 years. Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? It's the biggest issue we face. It's the biggest issue our children face. Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? Food prices are going to reflect this imminently, but that's only the beginning. Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? We can still make a difference, but we need to get talking. | |

| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 08:51 - Aug 3 by bsw72 | Climate change has already generated enormous public discourse for over three decades, arguably more sustained media and political attention than almost any other policy issue, yet emissions have kept rising. If volume of talk were the binding constraint, I’d expect more progress by now given how much airtime it already commands. Trouble is discussion often substitutes for action rather than driving it, basically this is “moral licensing” or “slacktivism”; people post, argue, or discuss, feel they’ve contributed, and that satisfies the psychological itch to act, reducing pressure to do anything costlier. |
I don't think that's really true in literal terms, and I certainly don't think it's true in terms of the type of 'talking' that puts pressure on governments. Definitely agree with your second paragraph. So maybe talking/discussion was a bad word to use in my OP. Agitating, maybe?

| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 07:24 - Aug 3 by chicoazul | What’s the point? Seriously? Climate change isn’t something that is going to happen or is imminent. It has happened. There is no stopping it. Any discussion about the mechanics of what to do is immediately shot down by mullahs on both sides. Like with so many many things talking is pointless, all it does is enflame the radicals and disengage the curious. Climate change is the cost of civilisation. |
But it isn't the cost of civilisation. It's the cost of mass consumerism and the energy it uses in the era particularly since the 1970s. The ideas and technology to avoid its worst excesses has existed a very long time*. Much could have been done historically and is being done now - including by some of the formerly worst polluters like China. What can be done going forwards is fighting against those who seek blindly to turn the clock back to a world of profligate hydrocarbon use, at best because of exaggerated ideas it would return humanity to some primitive way of life, at worst just to buy themselves votes. * Electric road vehicles were a relatively common sight and highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I'll ask you the same straight question I asked Benters then, hoping for a straight answer, but understanding if you don't want to give one: Do you accept that increasing human waste gas emissions into the atmosphere have created a situation where we are increasingly affecting the overall climate of the planet, and consequently are causing a big increase in severe weather occurrences?

| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 09:04 - Aug 3 with 727 views | RIPbobby | And look what the people with all the money are doing... Bezos and Musk are both building underground bunkers to protect themselves and rocket ships to get off the planet. What do they know? What is not being told to the small people? Something is coming our way and it is being hidden from us. That's what you need to think about. What is it? | | | |
| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 09:04 - Aug 3 with 720 views | The_Flashing_Smile | Everyone's talking about climate change. It's one of the hottest topics of our time (pun intended). Problem is there's very little we as individuals can do about it. I recycle religiously, don't use products from far flung lands, haven't flown in years, but it's all pissing in the wind as far as climate change is concerned. Even if the whole of the UK went carbon neutral tomorrow it would still be pissing in the wind. I think our only hope now is scientists coming up with a way to fix it. | |

| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 09:12 - Aug 3 with 702 views | _CliveBaker_ | Sadly talking about it wont do a lot, nor will paper straws and sticking our yogurt pots in the correct bin. It needs a grown up and joined up conversation that takes legislation further. Market based approaches, more investment in research and technologies, more ambitious targets that become legal requirements. There's plenty of talk, issue is in many cases that's all it is. | | | |
| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 09:14 - Aug 3 with 694 views | TwoKnightsInIpswich | I think the problem exists because humans are fundamentally selfish. If we can make a difference by not impacting our own standards of living then we are happy to sort our rubbish into different bins or throw an extra £1 in some charity pot that has pricked our consciousness. People fly around the planet to enjoy certain aspects and just offset by paying someone to plant trees. The biggest commitment anyone can make against climate change is to consume a plant based diet based on local produce but (this is the selfish part) we choose to enjoy that Argentinian Steak. We choose to put our tastebuds and our convenience first. People don't want to be told what to do and people don't want to be restricted in what they can do. Until we solve that issue the planet is doomed. | |

| Why aren't YOU talking about climate change? on 09:15 - Aug 3 with 689 views | MattinLondon | With apology to the OP as this will just be a collection of thoughts. The trouble being that most people are hypocrites in terms of climate change - we can all say that we’re concerned about the environment and wildlife but if you intend to vote for a party that will promote fracking, build new roads, increase North Sea oil then all that walking and not flying is just wasted effort. The bigger problem is probably people like me who still fly - again, all that recycling is pretty pointless in comparison. And having pet dogs, eating too much meat, buying too much cheap clothes all contribute as well. So, I think that a lot of people are talking about climate chance but there’s not enough action. A good step would be to invest heavily in public transport - make it dirt cheap but reliable so that the connivence of taking a car is totally destroyed by money. And then have add-on services like they’ll pick-up your luggage and deliver it to the address for an extra £10. | | | |

Greenhouse gasses. We need to emit far less of them. Even the easy first phase has been a tough sell: making electricity zero carbon. Much bigger challenges ahead: heating, making building materials (steel, concrete, etc), flying long-haul. I think people need to accept sacrifice. Almost everyone agrees "we" need to reduce, but not "me". Reality is, all high-carbon lifestyles much change. Won't just affect us and our offspring. At current rate, one-third of all species will be extinct in 50 years: https://www.pnas.org/content/1 (for comparison the "background" extinction rate in that time is 1/50 million). Biggest difference you can make is voting for a party that prioritises net zero. Yes US & China emit vastly more than we do, but those two countries still emit a minority of all fossil fuels. If the rest of us all point our fingers at those two, then the world will burn. Like I say, attitude must change from "we" to "me". [Post edited 3 Aug 10:54]

I think education and measurement can play a big part. What I would quite like to see is how many 'carbon credits' or any such other term is a sustainable daily amount for people? And how my day to day activities are adding up. 10 hours work on a laptop, a 20 minute drive to town in a particular car, a return flight, a clothing purchase online, the meals I'm eating. We have calories and sugar content on packaging, we all know 2,500 calories per day for a male is a ballpark figure, why can't we have a consistent measure of environmental impact from our activities. We all have a vague idea of what contributes, but quantifying it vs. an approximate 'target' would help.

I wouldn't say I'm defeatist; I'm optimistic that after purging itself of us (and, regrettably, as you've mentioned before, thousands of other - innocent - species), the planet will recover in the next million years or so. In that sense, I'm quite sanguine in terms of Earth's future. [Post edited 3 Aug 9:40]

Humans aren’t fundamentally selfish or fundamentally selfless by nature, evolution built us to be both, wired for self-preservation but also for cooperation through kinship, reciprocity, and empathy. Which instinct wins out depends on the situation, with climate change being especially hard because it lacks the trust, visibility, and immediate payback that normally bring out our cooperative side.

There are four out and out deniers (I think) on this thread alone. 'call out the whole population' - It shouldn't be offensive on an ego-level to anybody, let alone anybody who's already on the right track. The idea is to stimulate thought and discussion in places where there were none. I'm certainly not shouting at you Ryorry.

The selfish side is the stronger horse now, goaded on by consumer advertising. The troop/pack instinct is too weak by comparison.

Completely agree with this. Especially as modern trends and aspirations are for regular long haul holidays and a new car every couple of years. People aren't going to give that up and miss out while others still do. Individualism is king and covid reinforced that in some. I think we're screwed in terms of climate change but I live a simple life because I want a clear conscience, I don't really believe the "we're only individuals and we can't change anything" argument because the world's richest 10% (which most of us in western europe are in) contribute 65% of all Co2 emissions. We could make a huge different if we really wanted systemic change, but sadly the majority won't until it's too late.
