Harmless words that are underused.

Haven’t heard that one for about 40 years.

Sometimes I giggle about the frothing lunatic who’s put me on ignore and now has to constantly log out to see what I’ve said. Beneath that counterfeit persona lurks the same pitifully desperate egomaniac.

Always thought that derived from prannock.

Mr google suggests otherwise.

Not of the same general meaning as pollock or plonker, in fact the reverse. As a kid if something was extremely good, I.e. Wes’s goal against Coventry it would be described as a Bramah. Was in very common usage in the 60s in North Suffolk where I grew up. Hadn’t heard of the word for years but I think someone used it on here recently. Meant to follow it up at the time but forgot.

Looked it up and its origins seem to be with someone of that name who made excellent timepieces back in the day.

Anyone else remember using it or hearing it?

'North Suffolk'.......you mean Norfolk but you don't want to admit it, right?

Yes, berk is my favourite, because you can say it with feeling, knowing its etymology, without appearing to be very offensive at all!

So I just had to check that out via an AI convo. Pretty sure I'd heard the 'Berkeley Hunt' explanation before and just forgot.

I also went into the origins and evolution of the actual taboo word it refers to. This bit made me chuckle:

"Dictionary Bans: By the late 18th century, lexicographers actively banned it. Francis Grose's 1785 Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue censored it as "CT," defining it as "a nasty name for a nasty thing." It was largely left out of major English dictionaries until the 1960s."

While driving the other day, a cyclist drove out right in front of me from the side. I screeched to a halt, missed them, had the window down and all I could shout was 'Gorden Bennet' at them.

True story. Carry on.
