| Anyone know how O'Neil has approached cup competitions at previous clubs? 19:36 - Aug 10 with 3006 views | Dubtractor | McKenna could do almost no wrong in my eyes, but the extent to which he didn't seem to even try to win cup matches did annoy me a little. It would be nice to go and watch a cup game knowing we might put some effort in. | |

Otherwise it’s just trying to finish 14-17th so you can try and finish 14-17th again. Which is quite despiriting.

I’d be ecstatic if we finished 17th, let alone 14th! I expect the Carabao will be used to give squad players game time. And I’m OK with that!

I can forgive it for this season but ultimately the point is to win things. Seeing teams like Fulham and Brentford sitting in mid table and resting players in the cup when they have about a 2% chance of relegation is the epitome of modern football. At some point you have to use the period when you’re doing well to win things. Because the good times will end even for Brighton Brentford etc. and you’ll need the glory days to keep you warm.

Idk, a injury to a key player or two and suddenly the chances look a lot higher.

I mean by the time the FA cup comes around these teams are already a dozen points above the relegation zone. But out come the reserves again. Ultimately what is the point of football? I swear we are sucking the life out of it. I’d rather win the FA Cup then get relegated to league one than sit 14th in the PL for a decade. Then you build the project again with memories in the bank. Although I kinda of understand it, it is very dispiriting to go all the way to say Bromley on a Tuesday night and watch a reserve team who don't know each other and aren't really interested. If we can be bothered to go and spend good money supporting them I expect to see the club put out a team that wants and tries to win. A good League Cup run is something a Premier League team should aspire to.

💯 Palace Wigan Portsmouth Leicester have all won cups in the modern era. No reason it can’t be us. Imagine that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Exactly, we need the League cup for the full set in the cabinet

As much as teams care less about the League Cup, the bigger clubs are probably under more pressure these days to get a strong team out for the FA Cup. They can probably coast through the early european rounds and then sharpen up for the later stages of the League Cup coming up to xmas, whereas for FA Cup, a lot of the rounds are right alongside the knock out rounds in Europe and with the league getting serious and players tiring.

There is a happy medium that maximises our league survival while protecting it. Team continuity is more crucial but giving peripheral players an oppertunity to shine. It's a tough balance but we have been ridiculously conservative in the past. Maybe focus on one cup and sacrifice anything else. A good cup run would be good for team morale. It's not like our previous strategy has given us any benefit in the league.
| Anyone know how O'Neil has approached cup competitions at previous clubs? on 07:20 - Aug 11 with 968 views | Bluemike31 | Winning breeds confidence within the squad, only a fool goes into any game not trying to win it, that is what a Manager is paid for after all and I believe GON will do exactly that. | | | |
| Anyone know how O'Neil has approached cup competitions at previous clubs? on 07:32 - Aug 11 with 926 views | Blue_Heath | Was GON in charge when we actually won a cup game beating Wolves? For where we are at under KM the leagues had to be priority but if somehow we can stay up then moving forward cup runs are vital. Leicester in the Carabao is exactly the sort of game we'd lose in the cup under KM so will be interesting to see how GON fares in this one. | |

"it's not like our previous strategy has given us any benefit in the league" What do you mean by this? 3 promotions in 4 years is about as successful as it gets, no?
