I've been searching all over central London for eclipse glasses today. Found out online about a couple of places but they were both sold out when I got there. Tried in various chemists, opticians and Boots... even tried the Science Museum after a tip off from a woman in Boots. No joy. This is what comes of bad planning. |  |

Do you remember the 1999 one? I was working at my uncle's pub in St Ives Cornwall which was the best place to watch it. There were people flogging eclipse festivals and hyping it right up.
We went up on the roof and it was proper dark for a couple of minutes, the lighthouse in St Ives Bay started banging out light beats for a bit. |

Colander and paper plate/other white projection surface by far the best and safest method.
Get somewhere with a crowd, or somewhere with friends, or just somewhere with a significant other, and the communal moment as the world goes dark and the birds go mad and the temperature drops will be what it is about.
If you can get somewhere where you can see the shadow sweep across the countryside towards you at several thousand miles per hour, that is very cool, too.
Sadly there will be people who stare at the sun in "eclipse glasses" that they bought online who will discover, maybe years later, that they have damaged their eyes.

Apparently a colander can do the trick: not to look directly at it but to reflect it on paper.
Back in 1999, we went on to the top of an office building in London and used a bucket of water to see its reflection but the sun was much higher in the sky then, and it might work less well at 7pm. [Post edited 11 Aug 17:32]

You just need something with a very cleanly defined small round hole.
A key (using the hole that the keyring goes through) would work well.
Then it is about finding the focal length where the eclipsed sun magically (ok, by obeying the laws of physics) comes into focus on the projection screen held at the appropriate angle. | | | |

Thanks - with my eyesight I think I'll need something a bit larger than a bloomin keyhole though (albeit you've answered my question - my sieve is hardly a perfect sphere after several encounters with the kitchen floor from great heights!).
Edit - found perfect instrument - the wide handle to my small mirror has a 2 inch dia hole in t'middle :) [Post edited 12 Aug 12:51]

Oop t’hill and being beset by flying ants, with gunshots echoing all around - definitely an event, but more ‘I’m not a celebrity, get me outa here’!
Having said that, a leveret just hopped up to within 2 feet of me, paused and looked at me for a few secs , turned around to cross the road, decided I and the gate I’m leaning against were less threatening, and hopped through. Which has made it worthwhile, might eclipse the eclipse :) | |
