I've been searching all over central London for eclipse glasses today. Found out online about a couple of places but they were both sold out when I got there. Tried in various chemists, opticians and Boots... even tried the Science Museum after a tip off from a woman in Boots. No joy. This is what comes of bad planning. |  |

Even tried to find +12 shade welding goggles, same issue.

Apparently a colander can do the trick: not to look directly at it but to reflect it on paper.
Back in 1999, we went on to the top of an office building in London and used a bucket of water to see its reflection but the sun was much higher in the sky then, and it might work less well at 7pm. [Post edited 11 Aug 17:32]

When i was a school kid in the 1950's and there was an eclipse, the teachers got us using glass smoked over a lighted candle. God knows how safe that really was but i certainly seemed to have got away with it. | | | |

You'll be at such an angle you'll tipping that water over yourself to get the suns reflection in it.

Does it have to be this year's colander or will any year do? I suppose four years ago had the same number of days, so that might be a good bet?
Does it matter how many stories the office building has? As you imply, if the sun is high in the sky it probably doesn't matter.

But obviously staring at the sun will damage peoples retinas... Even during an eclipse.
Anyone can knock up a pinhole viewer within minutes. (I made 3 tonight)
Anyways.... for me not so interested in watching the Eclipse it is the weird darkness and sudden cooling that is interesting over here. Along with the wild life reaction..
Wickla and Irelands South East Coast is the best viewing tomorrow I believe.
Edit: Forgot Manure + Leeds playing in Croke Park tomorrow evening. I can but hope we can eclipse one or both of them this season. [Post edited 11 Aug 23:06]
