There are going to be very few survivors from last season. In my opinion there were very few who were capable of making the step up, 4 or 5 at most. But this does mean we are putting together a complete team with Davis, OShea and maybe Greaves as the only survivors. There is no doubt the new arrivals are major upgrades on last season. Two more arriving from Strasbourg this week and Ashton is saying it doesnt end here. In which case there is going to be some sort of sell off in the last weeks of august. Maybe 7 , 8 or even 9 players going back to the championship.

Hopefully not GON doing a Paul Cook demolition man job and KMcK back at Christmas to get a tune out of them all then...

Looking at the friendly performance at the weekend , I dont think that will be the case , but it is certainly a massive overhaul

Tho the narrative about players not being able to make the step up is complicated by the change of manager, who is looking at his own preferred tactical approach and style of player, as well as basic standard. Some will be out because they were good at what McKenna wanted, but not so well suited to O'Neil's ideas (or their roles simply don't fit with his system) - not because they wouldn't have been good enough.

More chance of being successful than we would be using players who aren't at the level though.

People waned us to "do a Sunderland"... well, we are doing it and that's part of it i'm afraid. I'm starting to believe we have the quality to stay up now, getting past that challenge will define whether we actually do it.

Presumably if you add in Enciso and Outtara, then our net spend will be top 3 or 5 or so in the League, won't it? I think there will almost certainly be one or two jaw-dropping deals still to come as well. Think some of the outgoings will surprise people as well.

I’m sure most disagree, but I find it interesting that one survivor may well be Humphrey’s and he barely appeared for us. I’ll die on this hill, but the kid just needs to be trusted to make the step up and be part of the squad actively. I think he’s a really really good player, obvs.

Agree with all that generally 👍

You may well be correct. I noticed he was one of the first subs on Saturday and played reasonably well too. Maybe O'Neil wants him in the squad , if so , good luck to the lad.

In fairness, I suspect the GON is going to have better material to work with than Cook did, even after his scorched earth activity - while he certainly got rid of some dead wood, we did still end up with Scott Fraser, Joe Pigott, Tom Carroll and Rekeen Harper

Pepole forget (because he's been around so long already) that Humphreys is only 22 years old. Which is about the age that most players break through to the top level. I'm not talking about youth prodigies like Rooney, they are exceptional.

Plus he has been at a club which has been bouncing madly around the divisions in that crucial period of his late teens to early twenties, with no stability to allow him to establish himself.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Would be lovely, maybe a Championship loan as a last chance to show what he’s got. Could be trying to give him game time for potential suitors to have a look.
Feels like he has a wise old head, protects the ball well, good eye for a pass and even the odd goal and actually pretty tenacious in the tackle for someone his size. Can’t see space in the squad but really wouldn’t have a huge problem with him there, just that he wouldn’t get much game time.

From reading the EADT article, it is very clear how ambitious our owners are. Quite scary to think how much more we could possible spend!

If we do manage to stay up, next summer could be absolutely mental.

It was inevitable this summer I think, but having this level of turnover three years in a row is not ideal. There was a narrative last summer that we were signing players that could make the step up if we got promoted, that has largely not turned out to be the case.

I think this has now become the norm in the game. The days of long service testimonials are long gone for players or managers.

I think ive finally come to terms with this constant change now and try not to get too attached to our players because they're probably not going to be stopping very long.

Hopefully if we can stay up the overhaul next season will be less as we become more established. But being a yo-yo club would undoubtedly see this complete overhaul every close season ongoing.

I think it's very hard to recruit for the Prem whilst in the Championship - best you can do is recruit players who can either just do a job in the Champ, or be good enough to become squad players at a higher level.

Like you say squad churn is almost inevitable when you bounce from division to division every season. It is only going to settle down once we spend 2 seasons in the same one Hopefully from our pov its the PL!

Hmmm, is that true? I feel like the narrative was that we were trying to do that... but ultimately the general consensus was it was near impossible to attract those players in the Championship.

I don't think anyone looked at the signings of McAteer, Walle Egeli, Nunez, Furlong, Mehmeti, Akpom, and Ashley Young and thought we wouldn't need huge upgrades if we got promoted.

This is demolition 2.0 that is nearly certain now. Fair its not 19 players incoming but we are not dar off given the work done last season this really doesnt offer much empathy for that group. Few warmed to it as a group and we scraped over the line. New manager gets this one chance to build the foundation after that it becomes too hard to do so lets hope this works.

I wouldn’t disagree at all. He benefits from being on a steep upwards trajectory, so I can easily see him getting game time this season. Not as a starter, but very likely some sub appearances to see how he gets on. Most of the others from last year were close to their ceiling and we know their limitations.

I only had O’Shea down as good enough to start and only then next to a better CB. Philogene and possibly Matusiwa as squad options and that’s about it from last year. That’s in terms of definite individual PL quality for a team comfortably surviving. A few others could have been fine in a continuation team under KM, but are unknowns under GON (see Guther’s point).
