| Hirst not in Germany. on 20:13 - Aug 13 by bazza | I don’t think there’s any player that’s left on a bad note from the McKenna era really, and if I was hirst, I’d take a new deal elsewhere , as he won’t get a sniff next season. And if we did go down, he still wouldn’t . He may as well leave on a high imo. |
At the current rate he'll definitely get a sniff. We have a completely unproven Emersonn, Akpom who has impressed in pre season but could the trusted to run hard enough in the Championship, and Hirst.

| Hirst not in Germany. on 22:08 - Aug 13 with 1813 views | PioneerBlue | I have no issue running Emersonn Hirst Akpom as our striker unit but would prefer a more established player in there for Akpom or Hirst. If there is money on the table take it. If Hirst wants football facilitate it and we can run with 2 strikers plus Enciso. Im not for offering Hirst or Stoke or anyone else any favours because Hirst may want more minutes. If that is what he wants he needs to improve all aspects of his game to be a first choice PL striker then we are good. [Post edited 13 Aug 22:18]

Wow, six downvotes for saying selling one of only three strikers (two of whom have no Premier League experience) was a bit odd. If we lined up a replacement I'd understand it a little more.

Well, quite. And our history of being one striker short at the end of every Summer window since 2022 might encourage a little bit of circumspection here.

Factually he has been before and is now. We could do a lot worse for a third choice striker, in fact I highly doubt we'll do any better. The only argument for getting rid is the money, which obviously does sound good.

Disagree and hence I gave an upvote to Jas00000's comment. Don't get me wrong Hirst was amazing for us, great player helped us scale the heights to where we are now. Like others before him I cannot understate how much they all rescued ITFC from obscurity. Hirst has paid us back what tenfold/hundred fold etc. But there is no sentiment in footy nor business in general. Hirst is in his prime at 27, why should he be sat on the bench playing a few minutes here and there. I presume he wants to push on and gain more internatial caps. From my perspective given we handed him the no. 9 shirt last season and I think he struggled for confidence and form. Which happens we do not know was he carrying a knock etc. Equally of all the current EPL clubs I'd like to think we have looked after all the players who have put a shift in and committed to the club. Way way better than how others have been treated. Being frank I do not think Hirst will be the answer this season, and he does not deserve to be benched for large parts it won't help him. Straight sale and let him spread his wings or a loan out to a top Championship team. That would be respectful and help his upward trajectory. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The contradiction comes though when everyone seems to be willing to give Akpom another chance based on a couple of pre season games. If Hirst struggled last season scoring 11 goals, what on earth did Akpom do?

More to it than that - when spending a lot and you have 2 options for your 3rd choice striker, do you guy with: 1 - Guy who has been better, and shown to be capable of that role who is in the books for £300k and could sell for a high 7 figure fee 2 - Guy who hasn't really done anything for us yet, but is in the books for £7m and would struggle to sell for half of that. We can't afford to bank losses on players, we need to get some profits in the book - if everything was equal I'm sure Hirst would be ahead of Akpom in that 3rd choice striker role.....but ultimately that role needs to be unimportant, and if it becomes important we are probably screwed anyway!

That is true. But two points: (1) we were obliged to buy Akpom, and presumably were obliged to give him a particular length contract when we did so. We're lumbered with him to a greater extent than we are with Hirst; and (2) there is at least a possibility, that can be reasonably investigated, that McKenna did not get the best out of Akpom last season. Either because of man management, or more likely because of how he was being used in the system, or to put it less kindly, whether he was just plain old out of position. The improvement in Egeli in pre-season is also evidence that not all players were played in their best position last season. Limited evidence, granted. The other possibility is that Akpom was a one season wonder, and that he is wasting a squad place. I don't know which is the case, and I suppose time will tell.

I think Hirst was ideally suited to a KMc style of play up to the Championship level where he was, at least in the first season, excellent at stretching teams on the counter attack. He was all-round elite in League 1 of course, too. In a dominant Championship team playing against deep defences, it just didn't really suit his game, not being able to hold the ball up well. In the Premier League as a bit part player he could also stretch a few defences, but against the sort of physical attributes and skill levels he would face there again, and being less of an unknown, he'd just be neutralised very easily I think. He's a specialist player really, but not suited to what we need next season at all. He needs a gig at a good Championship team which is set up to counter attack. Akpom's skillset makes him a better bet for our third striker (unless we use Enciso/Maeda as third striker option), but we definitely need another one to lead or to compete with Emersonn.

| Hirst not in Germany. on 19:53 - Aug 13 by FelixBlue4 | Not just with the Hirst position but with all players the club has to accept that a contract is a contract. Most players that sign in their early 20’s will have or be starting families and they get settled, if they have signed a 5 year deal that’s a long time to be in one place. It’s to easy for fans to see players as a commodity and forget they have a life away from the game. [Post edited 13 Aug 19:54]

Contracts in football seem to have little value, as to whether a player stays with a club for the length of them. Their main use for the clubs is to ensure they get what they deem to be full value for a player when they move on. Same applies to managers for that matter.

It's the TWTD forum and unless you want to buy 376 new players and let 99% of the current squad go, you're wrong!

Maybe we've reached that financial constraint, where we now have to sell before we buy. Ie if we buy first and then the sale fails we're too close to the financial rules limits and we run the ultimate risk of a points deduction? I don't see any other reason why you sell a striker when you don't have replacement in.

Agree with that summary- I thought he was going to have a really big season, but seemed a little of it. I know his game is about more than goals, but on paper he’s 27 with under 50 league goals in his career. On that basis £10m looks good business (especially with his small fee to join us). Definitely surprised nobody better than Stoke has come in for him though.

The biggest mistake Hirst made was saying "I want the Number 9 shirt" heaped so much pressure on himself that he could not handle.

It's unlikely it's financial constraints, but we will have squad number constraints. Remember, Hirst hasn't left the building yet, and the closing of a deal may be contingent on us completing something we're working on (but isn't in the public domain). George has been a great servant for the club, and deserves a lot of respect and credit, but he's not what we need for this season in the PL. He did OK 2 years ago (but even then was way off what we really needed), and regressed last year. I'd be surprised if we're not working on a number of no9 options of which we expect to get 1 through the door in the next 18 days.

I really hope we get £10m for him.. like taking candy from a baby, he’s not a top championship player, not sure what being Established really means.. joint 14 top scorer with 11 goals. He wasn’t good enough, I appreciate what he did for Ipswich, but last season he was well off it.
