Nixon was tweeting earlier about how GH doesn’t want a permanent move to Stoke, just a loan, but we want to sell.

Why are we trying to get rid of a player in a position we are already desperately thin in? Bizarre.

Harsh business football.

Hirst is not a world class footballer, but he’s done everything one could ask of him. He did the business when he was here on loan, he basically refused to sign for anyone else meaning Leicester had to sell him to us when they might have got more elsewhere, he gave his all for the club, and in his interview after the last promotion said how much he liked it here, and how he’d stay “as long as I’m wanted”.

I understand the motivation of the club, but it is still rough us easing him out of the door.

Not just with the Hirst position but with all players the club has to accept that a contract is a contract. Most players that sign in their early 20’s will have or be starting families and they get settled, if they have signed a 5 year deal that’s a long time to be in one place. It’s to easy for fans to see players as a commodity and forget they have a life away from the game.

Because at the moment the club has outgrown his ability.

Simply: We are trying to improve every area of the squad and we are doing a great job so far.

From technical commercial point of view £10 mil for Hirst would be around £8 mil pure profit give or take (depending on ad ons). We are offering out 5 year deals so when amortised over 5 seasons that £40 mil we are spending on Enciso and Ouattara for example is covered this season by Hirst at £10 mil (£40mil ÷ 5 = £8 mil). This is why prem clubs sell their quality youngsters because they are pure profit for the financial rules.

Above is oversimplification but broadly right.

I don’t think there’s any player that’s left on a bad note from the McKenna era really, and if I was hirst, I’d take a new deal elsewhere , as he won’t get a sniff next season. And if we did go down, he still wouldn’t . He may as well leave on a high imo.

Don't blame George I wouldn't want to go to Stoke either hopefully he will get more appealing offers in the championship.

Who can blame him, hes helped get us promoted, hes in the PL on PL wages and someone suggests he goes to Stoke!

Agreed.

I really don’t see any problem in keeping him, 3/4th choice of course, but if there’s bids of £10 mill it’s hard for the club to turn down.

Perhaps he won’t end up going and he will be bang up for proving the doubters wrong.

that's why we are seeing these loan with an obligation to buy deals - Stoke can pay him £x for 4 years but in the first year it's technically a loan so we pay him the difference between his new wages and his old ones.

if they're paying us £10m we could pay all his wages for one year to be fair.

Personally I prefer Hirst to Akpom and George would be decent as a 3rd striking option. I understand though that Akpom will be much harder to shift and the profit is in Hirst moving on. Just hope it's definite another striker who can challenge Emersonn is on their way though.

Thing is, with all these midfielders, I'm not sure we have space in the registered squad for a 4th-choice centre-forward.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Don't go anywhere George. The club cannot put you into a bomb squad and then you can walk for free and a big signing on fee, or just stay until the end of your contract and take your monthly wage.

He’s an established championship player who has been to a WC. He is not pony.

There’s no shame in not being good enough for the PL - very few players are. The Championship is where he can play in and that is still a high level.

You’d think sensible minds will prevail, and I don’t believe anyone at the club expects him to take a material hit if he is prepared to leave.

The problem in that is that if he simply takes his wages with no first team football, no ckub will offer him a big signing on fee. He’s hardly been prolific.

I think he’ll leave on loan before the end of this window - if he does well then maybe more clubs will come in for him.

George is one of the reasons we're about to have another PL season.

Great player for us.

I hope he stays. He played well when he had the chance in the PL last time.

It was a totally disrespectful comment towards a player who has played a part in 3 promotions for the club.

Can see both sides.

He’s been a huge part of our success, far from pretty at times but has delivered some big moments and led the line for a large chunk of McKennas tenure.

He won’t want to walk away from a bumper PL deal, hence wanting a loan, but if we are receiving anything around £10m that is also just an astronomical number for him to turn down.

Hopefully all amicable on this one and is resolved.

My understanding is that Stoke want him on loan, and claim they can't afford to meet our valuation. He'd rather stay, but recognises he needs to move on.
Derby wanted him, but can't find the money as their takeover fell through.
