Cyclists are supposed to sound a bell when coming round all blind corners ??
Here in Cornwall you would be doing it every 20 seconds. I very much doubt it would be heard either.

If it's on a road in the countryside why would anyone pre-emptively use a bell, not that road bikes will typically have one fitted? Funnily enough drivers don't hear bells.
I ride a gravel bike off-road on bridleways and the use of a bell is an interesting one and the subject of quite a lot of debate. Many people get more angry and het up after you use a bell to let them know you are approaching and, if it's clear and safe to get past, what's the point? Some people then feel obliged to move aside more than was necessary or indeed was needed at all and then get annoyed about it. I've actually tried making a noise with my brake levers instead of a bell given the reaction I've had from several pedestrians. [Post edited 14 Aug 12:57]

Definitely that. Always maximise your line of sight (both for you and for people coming the other way to see you).
Also, on a single carriageway road, don't hug the kerb unless you can see there's nothing coming the other way, as it encourages dickhead motorists to try to squeeze past. | |

Any road user needs to drive/ride in a manner which should allow them to avoid more vulnerable users.

Not necessarily where blind or sharp bends are involved, the advice is actually to cross to the outside of the bend because that gives you and the other road users the best visibility of you,and then you cross back afterwards |  | | |

That's for sure, most walkers react negatively to bells even if its just a hey im here pay attention to the road, stop wandering around thinking just because you cant here an engine theres nothing coming.
And the dafter thing is they nearly always react by stepping into your path not away from it.

But an electric car doing 30MPH round the same blind bend would probably make less noise than a cycle, because the noise would have been muffled by whatever caused the bend to be blind, my neighbours Nissan Leaf is almost silent rolling down our road at 30MPH. Or even a petrol engine if the car is coasting down hill, 1 in 7 is quite steep, will hardly make a sound round a bend, not trying to be confrontational here BTW. |  | | |

Electric cars are also a dangerous menace on this and other country lanes, but
1. Do have a hum to them which is audible if you listen out carefully
2. Are massively bigger in size so you’re more likely to catch a glimpse of them oncoming
2. Most drivers have taken a driving test and are aware of the requirement to drive within their stopping distance. | |

Also, there are not many footpaths that can be reached without using a car - sounds like from what you've said before that you were walking along the road where your house is maybe? A road that normally sees very little vehicular traffic maybe? One or two cyclists in the past have sounded their bells coming down and were perfectly well heard. One with friends behind also shouted a warning to his friends behind; all were duly given an appreciative friendly wave and thank you. | |
