| Jason Arday found dead on 20:31 - Aug 14 with 6891 views | BackToRussia | A really awful story. The scrutiny was clearly unbearable for him as I'm sure it would be for many. Think the university have a lot of questions to answer. | |

| Jason Arday found dead on 20:56 - Aug 14 with 6333 views | urbanpenguin | So tragic. The evidence strongly looks like he was a bit of a fantasist, though the only real issues academically are about plagiarism and from what I read that had been investigated and cleared. Nonetheless, there are all kinds of horrific stories of corruption and abuse across the academic landscape - a world I work in - and he was but one story. But the column inches and relentless reporting his story got was crazy, and I have no doubt it would not have happened had he been white and the whole shebang wasn't also a useful way for certain right wing outlets to bang on about diversity and equality. I also suspect that some of those outlets will now report on this tragedy as if it proves them right or legitimises their approach, because to do otherwise would make them have some self awareness or guilt. Away from all the story about his CV and fantasies, and away from the discussion about media overstepping, a man has (I presume) taken his own life. A son, lover, friend, relative, colleague has died, and that's awful and very, very sad. [Post edited 14 Aug 21:19]

At his worst, he was a chronic liar, and that's debatable. But the way he's been gone after, as you say, is absolutely insane. And we all know why it's happened, more boll0cks imported culture war sh1t. Dreadful outcome. [Post edited 15 Aug 8:19]

Truly astonishing. RIP and sorry it got too much.

I too worked in academia and agree with you about its ugly underbelly. Huge levels of politics and bullying endemic to the system. One member of staff had to go to the highest court in the land to retain her job after upsetting the President. She won her case but was sidelined for the rest of her career ( president had left at this stage ). There was no racist element to bullying purely because the academic staff was nearly 100% white. There is clear evidence to his assertion of bullying and racism ( not plagiarism required here ). https://www.theguardian.com/us

One day their approach will hopefully be deemed unacceptable but unfortunately they willingly take advantage of the importance of the freedom of the press to rip people to pieces. RIP Jason.

Indeed. I teach in a school that had a very high profile and widely publicised outing as a place that had let a few people create a culture of racism, misogyny and homophobia that ruined the experience for many students. It was widely covered in a lot of press, but never in any way like this story is about one single individual, which to me says enough that this story wasn't about the story, but about how the story could be utilised for other non-news but politically-useful narratives for the proprietors.

It is insane how this story was so prominent in the news cycle for so long - person alleged to have told porkies to get job, then gets found out, should not be national news in the way this was. I guarantee if a white professor had done similar it wouldn't be covered outside of academic circles. [Post edited 14 Aug 23:00]

| Jason Arday found dead on 22:21 - Aug 14 with 4907 views | DJR | His death has saddened me much more than any I can think of these last few years. It really was trial by media, and even the Guardian has been sticking the boot in these last few days. And reading some of the comments on here, it is clear that the media narrative cut through. Well as the saying goes, they've got their flesh. And let's not forget his resignation statement. “Sadly, the years since my appointment have also been marked by an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack. “While criticism is an inevitable part of academic life, what I have experienced has gone far beyond scholarly disagreement. The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love. “I have tried to continue because I believe deeply in the values of higher education, in rigorous scholarship, and in the transformative power of universities. I have tried because of my students, my colleagues and the countless people who have written to tell me that my journey gave them hope. “But there comes a point when the personal cost becomes too great. “I have a family. I want to be present for them. I want to reclaim some peace, some privacy and some semblance of an ordinary life. I no longer wish to feel as though I am living under a constant spotlight, where every aspect of my life is subject to public examination and judgement. “For my own wellbeing, for my family, and for those who have stood by me throughout this difficult period, I have concluded that the only way to bring this chapter to an end is to step away. “This decision should not be interpreted as a loss of faith in scholarship or in the values that first brought me to Cambridge. Nor should it be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me. It is simply the decision of someone who has reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure. [Post edited 14 Aug 22:38]

Where's the evidence he told porkies to get the job? He was after all a Professor at Glasgow University before he got the job. And my understanding is that no evidence was found of plagiarism. [Post edited 14 Aug 22:37]

I don't quite see what his ethnicity has to do with this, although it did lead to the media fascination with the story. He was a fraudster who was found out & couldn't face the consequences.

So why have you upvoted a post where ethnicity is a key premise? I might also add that your first sentence is wholly contradictory. Your second sentence is just generally unkind. Edit: The down votes and abuse report the post has gathered would seem to suggest others may just have drawn the same conclusion. [Post edited 14 Aug 22:43]

| Jason Arday found dead on 22:50 - Aug 14 with 4438 views | DJR | This is the family statement. “Jason was subjected to a campaign of sustained abuse for more than three years since he accepted the role of professor at Cambridge University by those who would leave no stone unturned in their quest to undermine him. “The campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason, who was a gentle man and who always wanted to see the best in everyone. “We are in shock to have lost this amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son. “We won’t comment further at this point beyond asking the press to leave us alone now, and to stop the campaign of harassment which has been waged against Jason and his family for too long.” | | | |
| Jason Arday found dead on 22:58 - Aug 14 with 4356 views | StokieBlue | Why is the person who caused this thread to be culled still here? Since his return he's done nothing but show everything that is wrong with this country at the moment. It's about the 10th time a thread has had to be culled or deleted because of his right wing racism, that's before we start on the threads culled because of his trolling and provoking other posters. Just because someone posted 20 years ago doesn't mean they should get a free-ride now, it was awful as many of his posts have been but that seems to be allowed nowadays. It's shameful. SB | |

It would be good if those claiming that he was a 'fantasist and fraud' could offer up findings of fact. He may not have been perfect - like many of us - but the way the press went after him was disgraceful.

I did see a copy of his thesis that had been passed through plagiarism software, and there was a very substantial amount of plagiarism - so long as that wasn't an entire fake thesis someone concocted. In general, his work seemed to rely on liberally using other peoples work without referencing it (This was somewhat astonishing - how few times he cited other academics, even setting aside the copious plagiarism). For instance, 6% of his final work was from one single source, constituting entire arguments lifted without being referenced. A lot of the blame for this whole situation has to lie with his academic institutions, and in particular Liverpool John Moore universe and his supervisors there, I cannot understand how his thesis was allowed to get into the state it was without people pushing back on it, and I can't understand how he was passed by the examiners. Had people pushed back earlier on, he would have had a chance to correct course, but instead a lot of people helped him dig a hole when they had a responsibility to do otherwise. By the time it got to the press, he had been encouraged and supported to tell so many tales, to embellish his cv so much. This feels like a deeply tragic situation overall, really sad for Arday and family [Post edited 15 Aug 0:31]
