Not sure why you've got so many down arrows for asking a simple question tbh.

FWIW I imagine he's at peace with his decision, but he's a human being and naturally there will be that small part of him that thinks 'what if' at times.

As others have said he'd burnt the candle at both ends here, incredibly hard working and puts a lot of pressure on himself to achieve high standards. Its part of what makes him such a talented and coveted manager but also can be a curse.

I respect his decision. He was on £5m a year, he's not short of money. Like all of us the most valuable commodity he has is time, and his children will grow up fast. Respect him for taking a breather and prioritising that. He's a thinker, he'll reflect and learn, and he'll be back in the dugout somewhere at some point I suspect.

I doubt he was thinking… oh look at this 20 new staff in the recruitment offices, we must going to spend another 120M in the championship this summer!

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Agree with all of that. Undoubtedly there’ll be things he’ll miss massively, and I suspect if he does get to watch us or maybe even any game, his emotions will kick in. Football’s been in his blood for years, so that’s only natural. He’s certainly deserved a break though; it seems like he made the right decision for him.

If I had to guess, I suspect he’ll not be able to keep away and will be back in a job soon.

The bloke was cooked at the end of last season, it was written all over his face at full time. He'll benefit from some time away. Regardless of how this transfer window ends, we will have to work extremely hard to stay up, and McKenna deserves credit for realising that he wouldn't be able to go again.

Someone on here mentioned how exhausted he looked after Southampton away and having watched the highlights again he looks shattered. Hope he rests well and gets the big job he deserves

Not even slightly. I'm sure he's currently spending a lot of time with his extended family in Northern Ireland over this school holiday period, and then will head back to his very nice home in Ipswich and relax. I'm sure in the coming weeks he'll keep his mind occupied with some punditry work and take in a few games at his own pace. Honestly don't think he'd even think about getting back into management until the New Year.

how much time was on his contract for when he left?

Doubt it. His decision ultimately to walk away and take a break.

Nothing to suggest he would have identified this calibre of signing. Equally, he may have attracted even higher. We will never know.

Time to now move on from KM.

no, the sort of bloke he seems to be I expect he will be delighted for us and really hoping that we keep up this time and his hard work fully pays off

I expect he had a very good idea of what was going to happen recruitment wise before making his decision. In my view it's win win, we get a new manager who's already been there and done it twice. KM gets the rest he obviously craves.

I get the pressure must be immense, and after 5 years it takes it's toll.

But I still find it a little odd, all that hard work, key in the design of the training ground, clearly got told there would be a huge kitty for transfers this summer, and plenty of goodwill for the coming season from the ownership, essentially a managers dream job.

He's just turned 40, his first managerial job, Mourinho has never needed a break after plenty of high profile, high pressured jobs.

Mourinho's managerial career:

Sept 2000-Dec 2000 (9 league games)

6 month break

July 2001-Jan 2002
poached by new club Jan 2002-June 2004
poached by new club June 2004-September 2007 (left by "mutual consent" after falling out with the owner)

nearly 9 months break

June 2008-May 2010
poached by new club May 2010-May 2013 sacked

a few weeks break

rejoins Chelsea June 2013-Dec 2015 left by "mutual consent" after poor run.

nearly 6 months break

May 2016 joins Man Utd until December 2018 (sacked).

11 months break

Nov 2019 joins Tottenham until April 2021 (sacked)

a few weeks break

May 2021 joins Roma until Jan 2024 (sacked)

nearly 5 months break

Fenerbahce Jun 2024-Aug 2025 (sacked)

3 weeks break

Benfica Sept 2025-June 2026
Poached by Real Madrid.

Longest at one club: 3 years 3 months.
Longest without any break from managing: 6 years 2 months (across 3 clubs).
First break from managing after just 3 months.

It really isn't a fair comparison at all. I would also argue that Mourinho showed plenty of signs of unhealthy stress during some of those longer spells of management.

The only reason we are having this transfer window is because of Kieran's superb work over the last 5 years.

Be fair... Ashton too.

The OP is suggesting with his question that KM leaving might have been related to an expected lack of action or spending in the transfer window, or lack of faith we could get the players in to stay up. That's the only reason seeing the business we've done might lead to regret.

There is no evidence that was on his mind when he made his decision, it's pure speculation. He just needed a break, time with family, whatever - but it was personal, not to do with the club or football or transfer business.

That's why the down arrows.

OP could have been taken either way as a) just idle musing re whether KM might have had some very mild, brief & passing regrets when seeing the juicy array of players coming in (my view); or b) was seriously regretting his decision (I’m guessing those who saw it that way were the downvoters).

A couple of replies were worse I thought - arrogantly presuming to know KM’s mind. Whose life is it anyway, etc.
