But I still find it a little odd, all that hard work, key in the design of the training ground, clearly got told there would be a huge kitty for transfers this summer, and plenty of goodwill for the coming season from the ownership, essentially a managers dream job.

Not even slightly. I'm sure he's currently spending a lot of time with his extended family in Northern Ireland over this school holiday period, and then will head back to his very nice home in Ipswich and relax. I'm sure in the coming weeks he'll keep his mind occupied with some punditry work and take in a few games at his own pace. Honestly don't think he'd even think about getting back into management until the New Year. |  |

I think if you combine the physical toll with the £8m release clause, which I think had become a noose around his neck, this was the best option for him.

I completely get McKenna's stance.
I would have said I was hugely ambitious earlier in my career, now I'm approaching 50, have no mortgage, a modest pension pot and want for nothing more than to work less and spend more time with my wife. Not even doing expensive stuff.
McKenna's earned more in his short years with Ipswich than i've managed in a lifetime, so if he's as switched on as he looks, he could probably retire right now. |  | | |

KMc had given everything to this football club for 5 years straight, absolutely everything.
He'd regret it more if he hadn't stepped away and stepped some quality time with his family, his kids growing up, far more important than any football club.

Some people have thicker skins than others (Mourinho's is rhino-level). Obsessive workaholics are more prone to burnout than those with more ability/experience to delegate and mentally step back or compartmentalise.
Plus Mourinho has never dragged a team from L1 to the Prem in three-and-a-half seasons, then faced relegation and re-promotion, all at a time when the club itself was undergoing a massive renovation. | |

I don't think he will be worried about it. He made his decision for reasons that are only semi explained and it was right for him to cut ties. He will be on to his own new challenge when the time is right, but will be enjoying considerable rest meanwhile.
I question what we could of attracted with him in charge. How would he of shaped us differently. He was a loyalist to his players and I think our transfer policy in the past has been less ambitious on the face of things due to his faith and belief in those that got him to where he is.
The flip side is a penny for the thoughts of Hirst, Taylor, Johnson, furlong, Walton etc who have been well around that team for a couple of years in most cases and are now seeing the succesful transfers and links. Must be an odd time to be a player from the old guard. | | | |

Im not sure about overall health but life balance and family seemed key points for taking time away. Im not sure in that way there is anything to regret with regards to leaving Ipswich Town. He will have other things to focus on like everyone does and he can come back to football once he is ready. | |

Another factor might have been that, given the relationship he had built ups with the players, he didn't really fancy the emotional toll of following through on such a complete overhaul of the squad which had to be much more drastic than the last time. [Post edited 18 Aug 13:08]
