| Out of the bigger names, who are you letting go? 04:18 - Aug 19 with 3132 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Raising a few quid and saving on some wages probably would be helpful as we close the window out and are likely to get towards 200M. Whether an Argentine World Cup winner or Swiss striker comes in or not, I’m pretty convinced we’ve got a couple more sizeable fees and wages left as yet to hit the accounts for 26/27. Mehmeti or Nunez is an interesting debate. Mehmeti had the better pre season but he has less positional flexibility and we see fairly stacked in his role now. Also Jack Clarke, possibility of a permanent move? Boro have spent a fair bit but could they afford him after Hackney and thenRogers and Spence sell on’s? That would be an intriguing move for them or any parachute club you’d think. The rumblings from local press is that there has been a heart to heart with Philogene who seems likely to stay, so do we really need all three there on the left? I’d imagine Maeda can cover central 10 as well if needed. Could be the best part of 40M in sales if we looked at the below, although harder to negotiate this late. Could see at least one of them being a loan. Ruthless I know but if you think where we are now and and that we are likely to bring 2/3 more in of real quality. - Hirst (Sale, looks almost done) - J Taylor (inclined to try and do this once a new CM is confirmed) - J Clarke (surprise exit for slightly over what we paid?) - Mehmeti / Nunez (profit on Mehmeti or Nunez loan?) I think the Ogbene’s and Humphreys of this world are more obvious ones but won’t be much of any real note in terms of in coming fees. [Post edited 19 Aug 4:24]

As to who, much depends on how they’d fit into GON’s systems. Of those players, we’d likely get a profit from Taylor, Hirst, Humphrey’s, Mehmeti, maybe Al Hamadi, less so Nunez, McAteer, Ogbenne or Palmer. Clarke would fetch a profit, as would Philogene and one seems likely to depart as were so well stocked with players who can perform in that position. A defensive departure also seems possible, maybe Kipre, or Furlong, depending on recruitment, as I think we’ll have a couple of loans in as the window closes. For me departing Palmer Mehmeti Taylor Humphreys Ogbenne Hirst Al Hamadi Furlong

You keep Furlong. He is capable of playing Premier League. He’s a good defender, has size and knows the game from a shthousery point of view. You also keep Clarke. Terrific player who after Hackney was the best player in the Championship last season. He’s shown in snatches that he can play Premier League and is a better player than two years ago. McAteer? Why bin out a bloke who was just settling and blossoming? He has pace. I’d also keep Nunez. Good player. The others you mention can go plus Philogene. Talent in abundance, but we are strong down that side and he would realise a healthy profit. Kipre is an odd one. Absolute beast and very likeable - but I think he’ll be too exposed through lack of pace in the PL so I’d either move him on or loan him out. As for being hard to shift, the only player falling under that category is Ogbene. Always a rather strange signing even before he was injured.

I'd keep Furlong and lose Johnson. Johnson has never really looked the right player for us.

Good point, the reason id kept him was his versatility, and his wing back skills, which may, of course, have been surpassed by our new recruit Ouattara. [Post edited 19 Aug 7:39]

Homegrown is any player who was registered with an English or Welsh club for 3 years prior to the season the reached 21. We need 8 of those. Club developed is what I think you mean, to get an extra bench spot, but as I learnt recently, that doesn’t apply to the PL so not relevant this season.

The problem is Furlong's sh1thousery doesn't fly in a VAR-led world. Plus, his "size" is irrelevant in a league where his profile is ten-a-penny. He'd be a walking yellow/red card in a similar fashion to Harry Clarke.

You have to remember that McKenna’s team was always lopsided due to the way it was set up with Davis pushing forward. Every player in that position including Tuanzebe was left exposed. I’m hoping that’s not the case this season. I disagree - despite VAR the amount of pulling, pushing, sneaky ones, cheating is at its highest in the Premier and you need people who know the dark arts. Size is important too. He’s a good defender - far better than Harry and unlike Tuanzebe stays fit. Like a number of our players, he’s better than people give him credit for. He is also familiar with most of the other defenders and I’d leave well alone in an area where cohesion is vital.

I love his 'get on with it' attitude, his steady improvement, his bite and his work rate, so I'll be a bit sad if he does go.

That sounds very harsh on a player who just had a great season for us, and yet, I can't disagree with any of it. The VAR point is particularly valid; in the PL he is going to be skimmed far more often & thereby would require even more 'dark arts' stuff out of the ref's eyeline, but he'd be nailed for it every time with VAR now.

Well obviously VAR is going to change this season if that does happen, because Cucurella spent 5 seasons doing the dark arts away from the ref's eye in the PL and VAR never pulled the ref up over it.
| Out of the bigger names, who are you letting go? on 08:43 - Aug 19 with 1744 views | Parky | Disagree that Mehmeti had a better pre-season than Nunez. I think Nunez has gone under the radar here, played full 90 minutes in 3/5 pre season games, including the final 2. (Of course having limited midfielders available played a big part in that). But I was actually quite impressed with Nunez, he’s being played deeper and getting the ball off the centre backs, which is exactly where he was good for the scum. I just don’t see Mehmeti ever playing, especially now we have Enciso and Egeli who will both play in the 10 and then Maeda, Clarke & Philogene out wide left. Think these will depart: Ali Ogbene Palmer Humphreys Hirst Mehmeti Taylor [Post edited 19 Aug 8:44]

Agree with all you say there, if Johnson going keep Furlong, we need to try and shift Ogbene and hope that McAteer continues his improvement. Love Kipre but think we need better as cover. Taylor should go somewhere he'll play every week. If Nunez could shoot properly I'd keep him, one of him or Memheti needs to go really.

He's a much better player than he gets credit for. I'm not sure where this myth that he's just a big shithouse has come from. Maybe if we'd paid £20m to Benfica for Darnellio Ferlonginho people would be a bit more excited. He's get a strong footballing pedigree, vastly experienced and street wise, a leader, and he's played in the premier league before. I don't expect him to start every week but he's a pretty solid squad player.

Can't really see any reason to retain Humphreys or Taylor over Matusiwa. Unless you could create a composite player out of the first two, Matusiwa is clearly the most PL suitable option of the three. By a distance.

He's a really solid defender and had a brilliant season last year - one of our 3 players of the season for me with DOS and Matu - but as others have said, his lack of pace (particularly, I think, on the turn) caught him out in the Championship and he did get away with a lot of pull backs and fouls. In the Prem, he'll get caught out even more, and won't get away with any of them with VAR. So excellent player that he has been for us, and massive respect I have for him and the way he plays, I agree with others that he's just not suited to Prem football. Oddly, I think he might do better as a CB in the Prem, but I don't think he'll get a chance there.
