| Liam Delap loses the number 9 shirt. 07:37 - Aug 20 with 3084 views | SitfcB | Think I actually feel sorry for him at this point. We all knew he shouldn’t have gone to Chelsea, we could see what would happen. Should have stayed with us for half a season at least, banged the goals in the Championship, last summer was too soon for a move to a club like Chelsea. If he’s still there come the end of the window and we haven’t signed the striker we need he comes back here surely? Can see him going to Everton or Newcastle though. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo | |

| Liam Delap loses the number 9 shirt. on 07:46 - Aug 20 by MattinLondon | A lot of what you have written is revisionism. At the start of last season his stock was very high and he was in the conversation regarding the England squad - so why would he have wanted to play in the championship? He was given the number 9 shirt, he started the season as their main striker and he won the World Club Championship. It was all going well until it wasn’t - that’s football. I do feel sorry for him but it wasn’t obvious at all that things would turn bad for him. |
Being fair to the OP, Liam Delap is the latest of a long line of players who have gone to Chelsea and had their career killed. With hindsight he would have been better off going to Newcastle or Everton, if he'd had a good season there, under less pressure I'm sure he would have seen an England call over the summer, probably in place of Ivan Toney. The question is, "what now?" the clubs he has been linked with (Everton and Forest) are unlikely to move at the £50m quoted for a player who has effectively had one good half season in the Premier League. I did think Villa might show interest with Watkins seemingly moving to Saudi, but honestly, if he doesn't get off to a great start there, the Villa fans will tear him apart. Best move for Delap now is a loan move with an option I think rather than a perm.

Sentimentally aside - he comes across as a nice bloke and has played for us before - I don't think he will give us value for the large fee Chelsea is expecting. He's still rather raw, hasn't pushed on in the Prem and his Prem/top flight experience remains limited. Plus I think we're looking to play with something more of a hold-up/marksman to get on the end of crosses and through-balls, rather than a forward who can burst past defenders and dribble half the length of the pitch (otherwise we'd have kept Hirst instead of Akpom). Redemption story arcs are all very well, but it didn't do us any favours with Phillips two years ago.

I think he was advised horrifically, and those closest to him should have seen this coming and talked some sense into him. His decision ultimately, but we forget these guys are still kids really and need strong guidance.

Why would having money and health disqualify someone from some compassion?

Disagree, he'd be an asset to us. He knows the place and has a lot to prove this season. [Post edited 20 Aug 9:52]

The key difference between Liam Delap coming back and Phillips returning is that LD will be coming back to familiar surroundings - ok, a lot of staff and players have been moved on but it will still be familiar and hopefully will rekindle his form and confidence. With Phillips, he was moving to get another environment with different players and staff. I think the reported £50M is nonsensical especially so given his form last season. But a seasons loan might well offer him an opportunity to play a lot of football in a lot less pressured bubble. Plus I think teams need different types of players whilst still having the ability to fit into a teams style.
| Liam Delap loses the number 9 shirt. on 10:11 - Aug 20 with 350 views | MathieandMarshall | One thing that was clear when Delap was with Town was that he was full of confidence and took leading the line in the Premier League in his stride. He had a really good season for us and attracted a host of bigger clubs along with the "Future Harry Kane replacement for England" chat! He'd have been better off going to a Newcastle at the time, however the Chelsea Manager at the time was someone he'd worked with before, he was going in as Number 9 and a lad of his confidence would have believed he'd go there and grasp the opportunity. The early injury didn't help him and it is a shame to see how its worked out. He needs the right move this time to rediscover that confidence in front of goal. | | | |

Thing is, we really need a properly experienced striker to complement Emersonn's potential. Delap is not really that, he's still in development himself (if anything, that process has been held up by Chelsea).

Presumably we will get some discount from the headline fee, assuming we have a reasonable sell-on in his contract drom a year ago. But it would have to be much lower than that (or a well-structured loan) to even consider as worth it, IMO. Plus we can't stockpile too many centre-forwards (with all those brought into midfield) given the squad limit. I still think we need more experience and nous in at No.9. Delap is too much of a "project" to rely on, when we already have Emersonn in that category.

I don't know if I'm in the minority but I feel like he had 4 good months here and then fell away a bit. He's physical but I don't know if we want him again. His confidence is going to be at an all time low and he just feels like the easy option of going back to something we have had before. Its not where I would want to chuck 40m quid. Considering you could get palacious and embolo for just a bit more than that figure. I think there are multiple routes to the solution we need, I would expect some business from this week to come together tomorrow as we have followed a fairly rigid pattern so far with an announcement due early next week.

Arguably 2 of our weakest positions last season as we finished below our expected points tally. I'd definitely say we'd have fared better with Hutch and Delap!

I think that when he was here he did show footballing intelligence and nous but ultimately just become frustrated with the lack of service and picked up unnecessary yellow cards. And at Chelsea, his frustration and lack of confidence aided to this reputation as a walking yellow card. Now, we have much better players so we might well be able to offer him better service, regular football which will allow him to flow more here. Experienced strikers with a good track record are not cheap, tend not to be readily available and the ones we need will have been playing at a higher level - not sure how many will drop down a perceived level.

Obviously got an attitude on the pitch which could be channeled in a better way, but no idea what he's like off it. Feels harsh to have him training away from the squad otherwise. Poor season last year but he was always second fiddle to Joao Pedro and had quite a few niggles. Only started 12 games. No brainer to try and get him back, but it won't be a great look for him. He'll want a mid table club.

Just think it’s Chelsea trying to force him out of the door. If he still honours international aspirations then he’ll need to start scoring again - we might be able to offer him that. I do think that we should go in for him.

Thats why we appear to be going abroad (with the attraction of a way into the Prem) and/or taking a risk on injury records. At least according to the links we're seeing. I do like Delap and think he has the potential to be a much better player than the Chelsea fans have seen*. Just not sure we can afford to carry that restoration project if it costs us the chance to get someone already better, especially at a very inflated price and likely high wages. * Happened to be on a train from Paddington on the evening after the FA Cup final and overheard lots of rude things said about Delap. It wasn't a pleasant trip, what with drunk West Ham fans from the Tommy Robinson march as well.

Embolo over Delap every time. More experience, better record, cheaper - at least in terms of transfer fee.

He'd started doing that for us in the second half of the season, but at least I could understand that a little with the service he was getting.
| Liam Delap loses the number 9 shirt. on 11:59 - Aug 20 with 74 views | PioneerBlue | I dont think it will happen but i do wonder whether we at least explored the prospect of a return. The longer it goes the more you wonder whether Chelsea will get the value they want at which point they might prefer a loan to rebuild value. I don't know that clubs like Everton or Newcastle are in the business of building value for Chelsea whereas newly promoted clubs have to do what they do to get the players. The Como option seems to take him in an entirely different direction which for a bright lad might be interesting. Serie A is a viable place to be top dog. | |
