Good question.
For me this season I just want us to stay up, there is no sentiment really like the promotion seasons where you had a connection with the players.
On that basis, GON could have enough in his locker to keep us up and that is the box ticked and all that is required. We do not have to love him like KM, he doesn't have to rebuild a football club, just deliver the bare minimum. [Post edited 23 Aug 9:47]

I was disappointed when it was first announced.
I was slightly less disappointed after his press conference as he definitely talked a good game.
When I saw us in pre-season and we looked really good I actually started to become quite impressed.
After yesterday, I now have a semi for him that won't go down.
Needs to sort out his resting bitch face though! ha. |  |

I don't mind saying that I said on here I thought he was a bit of a 'Meh' appointment. Neither a young up and coming or untried but potentially McKenna's esq and nor was a he a statement appointment either.
Clearly too early to tell but I have to say the way we played was with much higher energy and verve than I thought we might under him. I do wonder how pragmatic he might be - I have an inkling that in some games it will be different but if he gets the balance right from match to match (based solely on yesterday) - then it could be very effective.
I thought we looked like a team, not a group of players brought together over the summer and we had clear intent, you could see what we were trying to do.
Absolutely no complaints so far but very early doors. |  |

Yes, definitely the former. I could see the sense in appointing O'Neil (especially over someone like Solskjaer), but was not exactly overjoyed, either.
However, from the start I was impressed by the way he speaks and the kind of things he's been saying. Apart from that Oxford game, I thought pre-season went well and we've been able to attract quality signings with him at the helm, including from his former club. Now seeing the team in competitive action, I like what he's putting together and am optimistic for the road ahead. |  |

What I saw in pre season and yesterday has given me improved confidence that we can stay up it’s similar vibes to 23-24 not that we would stay up then but we’d be in the promotion shakeup.
And that is down to GON, been impressed tactically, the signings and his demeanour. Quietly confident and one swallow and all that but impressed so far. Stay competitive in next two and who knows. |  | | |

He was not my first choice, but once appointed I was 110% behind him. And he didn't disappointed from his first interview.
I then researched a little more, and listened to some of what he had said at previous clubs, and I fully understood his appointment. It is going to be a very interesting appointment, and in my opinion will define GON - it appears that this is the first club where he has had the opportunity to mould a team around his vision. For me the time to judge will be at the end of the season. He was brought in to do one job, keep us up. If he manages to do that then even though I was not overly enthused by his appointment, all credit to him.
The owners have backed him as far as they can in the transfer market and if we do end up getting relegated then it would not surprise me if we have somebody else in charge next season. | | | |

Was intrigued by him, didn't know much about him, but if I'm honest thought the time had come when a fresh pair of eyes might, like a set of railway points, be able to switch our track & improve us further beyond what our brilliant KM had already achieved.
I think his hardened Prem experience, re-assessment/coaching of some of our "old" players, & preparedness to rapidly change tactics, are already showing great promise, very encouraging - 🤞🏼for increasing success! |  |

Initially the Norwich connection wasn't great, but having a manager with a good CV and working with Bournemouth and Wolves got me involved with his appointment. We might not have the mega buck players that other Premiership teams have, but I can see how the team is efficiently creating a winning formula. KMc was a swash buckling coach who blew teams away but didn't have a plan B, but GON has a more intelligent approach using different patterns against different opposition.It might be a bit tense to watch, but we create chances that make goals. | |

I always thought he had a perfectly respectable record, and I was always entirely happy to welcome him and reserve judgment until there was something to go on.
He's had a fantastic start. Some decent results in pre season, that built as we went on. Converting some players that had been misused last season, eg Egeli and Akpom. Some really good transfer business, which we had a reduced time to conduct because of McKenna's disappearing act. He attracted Enciso, which other coaches may not have done. And then 3 points in his first Prem game for Town. McKenna took rather longer, and he was the Messiah.
Fans are very keen on the mantra that they want players who want to be here, and anyone else can do one. Well, I'm very much of that mind with managers too.
GON wants to be here, and I'm very happy about that. With the amount of money we have to spend, and we have had to spend over the last few years, this is not the very hardest job in football and there was not only one person capable of delivering results that roughly matched the budget.

I wasn't underwhelmed by his appointment, I was concerned that he had issues at Wolves with controlling players. However I've always believed humans improve if they learn from the mistakes they make, and I thought it was honest of him to at least acknowledge he has learnt from previous mistakes.
I always felt for this season he would be pragmatic and not welded to one idea, ie one game we press, another we'll stick 10 behind the ball, he will adjust accordingly, which is a good thing.
One thing which did intrigue me was at HT I said to my mate Sunderland don't trust their RB, every time the GK plays out he goes to the LB / left side. They did the same in the 2nd half. It wasn't until I watched O'Neil's interview that he had setup the team to force Sunderland to play left - obviously a weakness he had spotted. |  | | |

I was initially very disappointed, but that’s because I don’t give two $h1ts about the premier league unless Ipswich are there - I haven’t watch a prem game in 15/16 years that doesn’t involve Town or read a single report.
So my only knowledge of him was watching his Wolves team fight turn on each other after Ipswich beat them two years ago and I had him down as a bit of a joke.
But now you hear about this is the first time he’s ever been at a club prepared to spend - and I have to say so far I’m damn impressed with his signings and how we played.

Disappointed initially, encouraged since.
However it's too early to say. A common criticism of O Neil is that he starts quickly before dropping off a cliff results wise and being unable to change his approach. A pattern that happened at Wolves, Bournemouth and Strasbourg.
I think he'll do great and keep us up, whether hes the man to establish us as a PL side is a different matter but let's cross that bridge when and if needed! |  |

Rather than entire games in a set formation/set-up, I think we will change in game as well, also KMc used to force a team to play out a certain direction as well, I presume this make is easier to set up mid-field and defence to a single direction and pattern of play, I loved the pace and numbers getting forward on transition as well, a very welcome addition to our play. |  | | |

I was OK with the appointment at the time on the basis that there didn't seem to be anyone better who was a realistic appointment.
Much as I loved KM it didn't feel the worst time to part ways. Last year was a struggle. So in some ways a fresh approach can be positive, without ever forgetting the contribution made by KM. |  |
