Palacios in the balance and unlikely to go down to deadline day 14:36 - Aug 24 with 11421 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

According to EADT/KOA.

Looks like a bit of a standoff and obviously we need to pivot if Leverkusen won't meet us a bit closer to the middle.

Crucial 24-48 hours on this one, you would imagine.

The fact they brought him on Saturday seems suggest we are still slightly under what they are prepared to let him go for. He is under contract until 2030 afterall!

Replied to Phil about this on another thread.

I wonder if this is an accurate assessment, or something planted by the club to try and put some extra pressure on Leverkusen.

Not too sure why we don't just pay the 30m euros they want for him. Honestly think a player of that quality is the difference between relegation battle and comfortable mid-table for us.

For all it was a strong, gutsy performance Saturday, it's worth remembering we only held 30% possession, so clearly there's work to be done in terms of controlling the middle of the pitch.

Putting aside whether Leverkusen's valuation of him is accurate, what sign does this send to any other club we look to buy from in the future?

Sounds like our last offer was close to what they want.. imagine there maybe is just some tidying up to do on how the deal is structured, clauses etc.. The other offers we'd made seemed to be publicly announced as rejected quite quickly whereas this one its been pretty quiet.

Well considering the player has put in a transfer request and Leverkusen have refused to budge from their value at all I would assume they would be more the damaged of the two clubs for future deals.

No club ever offers what is wanted and try to negotiate the lower, that is the nature of negotiations.

On the other hand if you are a player moving to Leverkusen and you see that they dont move a smidge even if you hand in a transfer request which is the professional way to handle the situation regardless of contract length then you might find said players suddenly asking for lower release clauses in their contracts.

Struggle to see how we're anywhere near that threshold yet though.

Guaranteed TV money this year is £108m. If we go down, then it's at least £130m spread across the three seasons, unless we come back up.

Add to that, the pretty significant sales of Hutchinson, Delap, Broadhead, Hirst, Clarke, etc... in recent times, and surely we're looking at a budget of around £300m for the next three seasons, worse case scenario?

None of the transfers so far will be paid in full this season, so our up front expenditure is unlikely to be anwhere near £100m yet. If we go down, we'll inevitably sell players to balance the books too.

Maybe controversial opinion here, but to be honest, if we've got 30m to spend (and after what we've spent already, thats probably all we've got left), I'd rather we spent it between a new RB and a striker. We are very thin in those positions (I do not count O'Shea as a RB, he was caught out a few times on Saturday), and between Lukic, Florentino, Matusiwa and even Nunez now, I think our money might be better spent there instead.

Poll: Assume we have the money for one more big signing. Where do you spend it?

Palacios in the balance and unlikely to go down to deadline day on 14:57 - Aug 24 with 5660 viewsTripSwitch

I really really hope we get him. Just seems to be the big signing we've been building towards. For all that Lukic, Azor and Luis look brilliant signings to give the defence great cover, we really could do with the box to box metronome to help us in games where we are trying to box a team in to build attacking pressure.

Palacios and Delap on top of who we've already brought in would be a 9 or 10/10 transfer window in my eyes and I'm confident that provided key players stay fit we would have enough to stay up.

None of those CM's mentioned are game changers though, Palacios could be a serious game changer / match winner.

It does not sound like there is a huge amount of negotiating going on unfortunately. It seems like we are just bidding up to the price which has always been the asking price which is fair enough.

We did the same with Omari last year.

They're well protected, why would they not.

I guess it for us it's clearly not a question of money, but a question of how we spend the money across the 3/4 positions we need and how much we can allocate to Palacios.

That Philogene money really would have been very nice.

If he wants out to play in the PL, which appears to be the case and we are near what they want, I am leaning on it still getting done. However, they do seem to be prepared to dig in, which from their point of view makes sense. He signed a contract through 2030.

That said, we have chucked about 8 figure fees around for the likes of McAteer, if we are close, just get it done!

We also don't just transfer £30million instantly for a £30 million player deal. It's spread in installments and the fee is spread across the contract so it's not just a case of sky money and earnings minus full transfer fees paid equals we run out of money. We've got 'plenty' depending on how the board want to play it and how much we want to risk going forward.

A right back is far less likely to win you games at this level than a central midfield capable of winning their battles though. It was our single biggest weakness last time out and Palacios next to Lukic would start to look mid table quality if they can stay fit. We've made good progress this summer with a couple of additions there, but a big ticket #8 feels like a game changer for me. O'Shea is solid, Furlong too. They've both played at the level before and while you wouldn't want 38 games from Furlong he's a trustworthy enough deputy.

Get Palacios & Delap in, move on Taylor & Humphries (along with the fringe - Ogbene, Palmer, AAH) and we'll be in a good place to get our heads down and attack the next 17 games until the Jan window IMO. That would've been a heck of a window. Don't disagree that a right back, probably RW and couple of others would be ideal, but they might have to be the next phase.

Tell me you do not understand how Squad Cost Rules work without telling me you do not understand how Squad Cost Rules work.

There is a limit to how much we can invest in the squad this season, based on this years income. Sales of Hutchinson, Delap and Broadhead do not count towards what we can spend this season.

Btw, our wage bill was £75m in the PL two seasons ago, and was the lowest in the division by a distance. I would expect it to be around £100m this season.

We shouldn't get too carried away with Sat. We did great and looked so much better than 2 years ago, but still the goals were from 2 Sunderland errors. Midfield is so crucial in the PL, we need some real magic and depth in that area of the squad. We've clearly identified him and seems to be a top target so why miss out for €2-3M as I think that is all it is based on what Leverkusen want as a base payment.

They may have been Sunderland errors but that’s because we forced them by the way we pressed.

Most goals come from some sort of error by the defending team, be that a misplaced pass, poor positioning, over committing on a break etc. The more important thing to judge a team on, is their ability to take advantage of that, which we did perfectly on Saturday.

£2m - £3m is a lot for a club with a finite budget. I would guess we're starting to get pretty close to our ceiling now from a SCR perspective, if we do this deal and perhaps 1 more big one.

Agree with this. If we've got £30m left to spend, I'd spend it on the central midfield. The defence and striker "back-up" options can be free agents if they have to be. That CM is so, so crucial at this level.
