| Recruitment 22:10 - Aug 25 with 2684 views | Mckenna1263 | Tonight yet again confirms how bad last year's recruitment was. Anyone suggesting that Akpom, Kipre and McAteer could do a job in the Premier league is deluded. Thankfully management seem to be aware of that given the ruthless culling of the squad and the ongoing recruitment. | | | | |
| Recruitment on 22:14 - Aug 25 with 2557 views | _CliveBaker_ | There were recruited to get us there, not necessarily keep us there. You don’t tend to buy premier league quality central defenders and forwards in their prime for £3m & £7m. It gets you a Harry Clarke & George Hirst these days. We probably overpaid for McAteer though. | | | |
| Recruitment on 22:15 - Aug 25 with 2503 views | MattinLondon | Kipre did a good job in the championship and for the money spent on him I don’t think that he can be labelled a bad signing. Akpom was a worthwhile gamble, scored a couple last year and he looks sharper this season. The fella simply needs a goal but it doesn’t seem to be happening for him here. McAteer was definitely overpriced - he works hard and probably needs another season in a good championship side. [Post edited 25 Aug 22:16]

| Recruitment on 22:18 - Aug 25 with 2416 views | IndependentlyBlue | Bit of a false analogy really. They were recruited while we were in the Championship, which we were successfully promoted from. Bit rich to suggest that it was poor recruitment because you don’t think they can do a job in the Premier League. | |

To be fair Akpom didn't really do a job in the championship. Only reason we got rid of Hirst is because someone gave us £6m for him. If that'd been Akpom, he'd have gone instead. IMO.

| Recruitment on 23:43 - Aug 25 with 1817 views | ClareBlue | Last year's recruitment was to get us to the Premiership without mortgaging the club to a level that if we didn't get there we would be in serious financial difficulties. It worked. So it was by any definition good. This year's recruitment is a different objective which will be judged next May. | | | |

The point is he's no better than Hirst, he just doesn't hold as much value. So he's still here.

| Recruitment on 07:26 - Aug 26 with 1359 views | SuperKieranMcKenna | I mean it wasn’t pretty, but they won at the end of the day - only their second (first for many) competitive game under a new manager. The likes of Akpom were to strengthen a Championship team, not a PL one. It does show how far we’ve come that we’d have loved a player of McAteer’s level in our first team pre Gamechanger, now he’s arguably not good enough for our second string… | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I would suggest he is way better than Hirst in most aspects of the game.

To be fair, I've yet to see Akpom try to switch a ball to the right wing from the centre circle and belt it straight into the stand. I like Hirst, but I think his game / confidence suffered in our last Prem season having to play second fiddle to Delap, and he even ended up in that position to Azon last season. Think he needs to be the main man somewhere to get back to his best, which he'll hopefully get at Stoke. As for Akpom, think he'll end up 3rd choice No.9, so are we going to get anyone better who's happy with that role? Think he's done well so far this season...helped us see the Sunderland game out (won a few cute free kicks), led the line well last night, good work to play in Jack Clarke to assist the first, got an assist of his own for the second, and a bit more match sharpness probably sees him grab a goal or two for himself. | Recruitment on 07:51 - Aug 26 with 1226 views | ThatMuhrenCross | The recruitment was designed to get us promoted from the Championship, and that’s exactly what we achieved. We don’t need to waste emotional energy worrying if Kipre or Akpom can perform in the Premier League. We know they can’t, but that’s not what they were signed for.

Yes, that explains all of those starts that Akpom got ahead of Hirst last season

| Recruitment on 09:07 - Aug 26 with 939 views | tetchris | I never understood why MA agreed to the terms of the Akpom deal. We should have just let Birmingham have him! He isn’t PL quality and if I was GON after last nights performance I’d be telling him he can go. We desperately need at least one new striker if not two otherwise I fear a repeat of two seasons ago when we failed to buy another decent striker and had to rely on Delap. Leicester had our pants down over McAteer. Kipre did ok last season and is ok for a back up or used in cup games. Diop is certainly an improvement. We laud KM for what he achieved at the club but if the final decision to sign these players was his, then I am sort of glad he’s gone otherwise our recruitment might have been suspect again. Ogbene, Szmodics, Muric, AAH, and Mehmeti were all poor signings under KM’s tenure! | | | |

Ogbene was injured almost as soon as he’d signed for us so not easy to say whether he was a good or bad signing based on less than 10 games for us Szmodics scored a few goals for us but dressing room “unrest” meant we got rid. Don’t think that could count as a bad signing. Muric was a bit of an odd one. We may have overpaid for him, although we got a good bit back, but once the boo-boys got into him his confidence went. Shame as he’s a good keeper AAH was a project that didn’t really work out but we will make money on him when he goes so not a bad signing Mehmeti did well for us in the Championship but not likely to cut it in the Prem. Again, we will make good money on him when he goes so not a bad signing

Akpom's general play isn't bad but like Azon just can't seem to score when he gets a good chance.

Tough recruiting PL players when you're not in the Premier League. Simple as that. Get best you can, get to the PL, then start over. It's what we've done. A couple may step up if you're lucky, I think we've done incredibly well with Leif to go 'all the way' and Greaves I like too. Nunez, time will tell, but certainly positive. Egeli, still very young, but I like what I see in the 10. Tough position to play well at a step up, but has an eye for space and good movement imo.

Recruitment for a PL season was far more miss than hit. How many of these really showed the needed quality in the PL? Delap, Hutch although poor numbers, O'Shea looked ok at times. The rest really struggled to contribute or were plagued by injuried. So a combination of poor recruitment and bad luck with injuries. Hutch Johnson Greaves Delap Muric Townsend Szmodics Jack Clarke Dara Ogbene Philogene Palmer Last years was better imo. [Post edited 26 Aug 9:48]

Another point about Akpom (baring in mind, I thought he was useless last season) is that before joining us he had been promoted from the Championship to the Premier League with both Brighton and Hull City - good experience to add to the group for last season, even if he did woefully under perform. Interesting to see him looking a bit more of a player this season - I never did understand how or why he was being played as a number 10 last season.
