Was noticing these all in one jobs that you can see for <£100. but have heard a lot of mixed reviews about sound quality, and potential to damage records.
Popped into Richer Sounds, and they recommended a set up of 3 separate entities, turntable, amp and speakers coming in around £350.
For someone that doesn't know how much they will use the set up, is it worth the larger initial investment? Are the cheap all in one jobs worth even trying ?
I was thinking the cheap option, but then if I use it enough I could upgrade, but would the cheap option make me less likely to upgrade as it wont sound as good?
All recommendations, thoughts greatly appreciated.
I got a decent deck from Aldi of all places, probably about five years ago, which came with a decent Audio-Technica cartridge. I paired it with a £100-odd pair of Edifier bookshelf speakers with in-built amp, and am generally happy with the output.
I'm not a massive audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm happy with what I got for the money.

I got a Sony record player for £170, and then got some speakers for it. Don’t get wireless they won’t sound as good. Always get one wired up.
I’m not sure if you need the Amp but if you’ve got the money then get one. I think most good record players have pre amp

Most decent branded stuff thats even over 20 years old is usually far better than any modern equivalents. you can find plenty of old rega or Pro-ject decks and speakers floating around market place and people happy to demo for you, generally people that have purchased these in past tend to look after their equipment also. The same for amps, plenty of old pioneer or NAD amps for next to nothing on market place. as a cheeky amp for my dj set up i found a monitor audio airstream that has a built in amp, fully boxed for £50. these were released to rival sonos at the time so again plenty of bargains to be had. always happy to assist if you need help as am a massive audio and visual nerd that has purchased every copy of what hi fi and home cinema for the last decade or so, had a stint of buying and selling ex demo stuff and still spend far more than i should do on building ultimate music/ home cinema set ups for my self

Still have the type of set-up recommended to you by Richer Sounds which I purchased from them over 20 years ago, but then again I'm a bit of a Luddite.
Pro-jet turntable (Ortofon cartridge and stylus), Sony amp and Eltax speakers and despite getting a lot of use, all still going strong without any issues over the years.
As others have said, turntable, amp plus speakers is the set up you want really.
Don't need to spend huge amounts. Have a look on eBay for a decent second hand amp with a phono input. Brands like denon, NAD, technics etc are all good.
One of those all in one units just won't do justice to the sound.
I actually have a Pro-ject essential ii turntable (in perfect condition) that I'd be happy to sell for £80 if you're interested (and local to Ipswich!).
The Richers Sounds set up for 350 is very reasonable. Definately separates is the way to go. An all in one set up for less than 100 would be no where near near in terms of quality.
The 3 separate is obviously the better option. Was just hoping to save some money, especially not knowing how much it will get used. (Gift for the wife + some favorite albums)
Richer Sounds are one of the best capitalistic institutions in the Uk so I’d just go with whatever they recommend.

Looking like biting the bullet and spending more is gonna be the way to go.

That Richer Sounds offer is , for the price, a bit of a snip. When I got my system from them they let me bring in a selection of music- they had a designated room in the old BSE shop for this purpose- to try out different speakers. Denon is a good make which is what mine is mostly made up of and its lasted years and still sounds great even against my Sonos.
It isn't just your albums that cheap audio options can damage - consider the even greater cost of damage to your hearing. The separates should deliver a cleaner sound and save you straining to pick out the detail in a piece of music, even if you are doing that sub-consciously without realising it.
