Genuine question, what do you want the club to do?

As things stand, without Flemming, we have a squad of 26 players (plus 2 U21's) with Flemming coming in, we have 27. Ogbene expected to be confirmed out, leaves us with 26. If we don't register Button, that leaves us on 25.

Mehmeti doesn't want to go; Taylor is injured and the rumoured interest in Palmer never materialised.

Mehmeti probably worth £7m; Taylor £10m; Palmer £3m Which of those do you want the club to release on a free or which of our other players do you want sold to make room? Because unless we get an inexperienced U21 player in, that's the only way that we sign anyone else.

That's kind of my point.

It's their job to manage this in some respects, there really isn't a world where we should end up with a 10M new keeper and Walton + Palmer tbh.

I don't think it's unfair to say we have an incredibly exciting and ambitious window with some great signings but also to be a little concerned about the lack of resources put into the backline after our 2024 season.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I think it might be time to get tough with Mehmeti and say if he doesn't move then he won't get any football for the first part of the season. Harsh, but players soon put their parts on when they no longer want to be part of the club (Alvarez, Fernandez, Mateta, Watkins). It may be too late now, as anyone who would have been interested could have moved on, but income from his sale may have helped us bring someone else in.

I'm astounded no one has bid for Palmer, to be honest. If he doesn't leave, is he really going to be our number three behind Walton?

I guess you could say Signing Akpom and Kipre on obligations was a bit daft
buying mcateer when he wasn't really better than ogbene and then we're stuck with him on prem wages now too whilst we've also had to get rid of ogbene again this week

But apart from that

The question I guess that will come of it if things don't go to plan
Was spending what we did on the transfer and wages of Palacios worth potentially deals of a few more players in other positions when we had other CM's in the building but didn't really have any fullback covers, RW cover or top quality striker options

Always going to be a discussion point when there's gaps to bridge, just part of it all

As long as we get Flemming, im happy enough, would have liked some other options in other places. but i'd be happy enough until Jan

If we dont get a striker by tonight, it's then i'd feel really annoyed, but I do appreciate other people's thoughts on it all

Why do we have to give the players away on free transfers? Just because we opt not to register them in the 25-man squad does not mean that they must be disposed of.

....about "player trading", he said how important it was. Obviously that involves selling as well as buying.

Buying is easy when you've got "a flipping great wad of cash" behind you. Buying excites people, selling doesn't but it's just as important.

Our efforts at selling (with a few exceptions) has generally been poor during Ashton's tenure, as proven again in this transfer window.

No. It doesn't but their value then plummets as does their fitness.

I know it's not the fashionable thing to refer to, but I'm sure this has been one of the criticisms levelled at Ashton by fans of his former clubs - the fact that they ended up with squads full of players on inflated wages, who simply couldn't be moved on.

I would like to think because we are not just thinking about our balance sheet, but are considering what is best for those players if they do not have an immediate career at Portman Road.

It's the right thing to do morally - we are not Chelsea.

EDIT: I will add that if the club felt they had an option to sign the right defender, then they would have made a decision to cut a player, but leaving players to rot doesnt' sit right with me.

Yes, I know. But the fact we aren’t signing anyone else won’t be because of numbers. I have no doubt if there was someone available to sign to improve us we would, any players not deemed necessary would just harshly be left out the registered 25 if they were unwilling to leave

Nope, I like that if he's got huge upside. I don't like paying whatever Palmer is on as a third choice keeper + squad place.

A player with experience in the Prem, full international, with two Champ promotions on his CV? In this day and age £10m is not at all far fetched.

Agree.

The balance just feels a bit off!

I'd have preferred Mendy LCB and going for two CMs and then trying to loan one late I think but again it's such a tough balance, we have opted for 50M in CM and I certainly won't begrudge them staying patient with getting Palacios.

I also thing in terms of getting players out we are still paying for some of the average recruitment of the last couple years.

I'm not sure anyone is being left to rot.

Take Mehmeti for example. The club accepted offers for him, and he's free to move on if he wants.

He'll be fully aware of the consequences of 'staying to fight for his place' - he has a decision to make regarding whether he wants to not be in the squad, and collect his pay-cheque in return for training every day, or whether he wants to go elsewhere and actually play football.

I don't think there's anything immoral in saying to him "there's no first team football for you here this season, so you're free to leave".

I thought one of the criticisms was that he tended to sell his best players.

If Town were desperate to add another player, then they would presumably just not register someone. Harsh on whoever it would be, but it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.

Wow. I am so out of touch. I would happily accept £4-5M for him. Crazy prices for bang average players these days. I like Taylor, but £10M seems bonkers to me.
