We kept being aggressive. I thought we were the better side second half. Palacios and Lukic outstanding. We carry more threat than last time. Palace is the game we need to win. Play like that and I think we will.

| Best I've felt after 2-0 loss on 05:12 - Sep 5 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Yeah I just don’t get it tbh. The owners mean business, the manger said he fully expected us to get something out of the game and some of the fanbase pretend like it’s a third round tie and it should have been a hatful. It’s a very weak mindset. No disgrace losing to a champions league side at all but pretending like it’s a hugely positive night when you’ve lost the game inside ten minutes at home, not for me. Especially when it’s the 6th goal conceded in 40 odd minutes of league football. For what it’s worth, I think we can go on to have a competitive and decent season if we iron some stuff out. However, there are obviously a few questions at the back and GK position and we very clearly to stand up way better at the start of the games than we did tonight. These back to back goals within minutes can’t continue again. [Post edited 5 Sep 5:17]

I think we are staying up. There is an abundance of quality available, especially once Philogene returns from injury, to help us attack games more. We've already scored 4 in our last 3 games and we've already had to face 3 of last season's top 7 sides, so there's plenty to work on. Liverpool is the only game I consider unacceptable so far, though. At least, against Man Utd, you could understand why it happened, and also consider that had we had Flemming on for the second half rather than Akpom, we may have been as effective going forward to try and get seomthing of the game, or protect the draw, chase the win, whatever. I'm excited to play Palace and Fulham in the same stretch of games, I really do think we can win both games if we are even slightly more resilient than we have been so far. Honestly, even if we aren't, we have enough talent in front of the back line. Everton is a mixed bag. They lost the transfer window big time, one natural RB and it's Maitland-Niles, one LB and it's Mykolenko, and one ST. The core of the team is still quite strong, though, it will be an interesting game. [Post edited 5 Sep 5:43]

But I do think we need to urge caution here and not kid ourselves about the final third of the game, Liverpool clearly took their foot off the gas, and just went to contain mode - of course we had more of the ball. On to Palace. But we do need more work on gelling the team (obviously, they've not all been together long). And let's not kid ourselves that last night wasn't worse than Old Trafford. COYB

| Best I've felt after 2-0 loss on 00:49 - Sep 5 by seblue78 | I’ve got mixed emotions after that. Feels like we’re in a better place than last time. But equally felt quite reminiscent of some of those games the last time around where teams just killed us off with a few short bursts and then cruised. The mf and forwards are much improved (Palacios v encouraging when he found his rhythm). Particularly with Matisuwa and Luis to come back. And I really like the look of Emmerson who’s a real handful. And looks suited to that role and to the physical demands of the prem. The defence worries me though. Diop is very hesitant and doesn’t look particularly comfortable on the ball. I’d maybe consider moving OS back across into cb and putting furlong or Outtara (who looks a real prospect) to RB. Special mention to Jack Clarke who was excellent when he came on and looks v much up to the prem standard this time round. Oh well. On we go. Guess we’ll know a lot more in 4/5 games. |
Funny how people see games differently, but I guess Seblue’s post is closest to mine. I was at the game so there’s no commentary bias in my thoughts. The good: We have better players than two years ago. Far better and a little bit of depth too. Palacios took time to adjust as you’d expect but is a real player. Encisco worked hard and is a threat, though got lost in the game as he tired. Outtara is a real player. Didn’t give the ball away. Thought Clarke looked a PL player too and Lukic knows how to play. Lief, no problem. In fact his side of the pitch held Liverpool well. Fleming? Far better at this moment than Emersonn. The crowd stayed with it and were excellent and the players kept at it too. The bad: Realistically the game was done in 10 mins. If Liverpool had needed 10 they’d have got them. It became a pre season training session because that’s how they wanted it. Why? Mostly far better players who were much better drilled. Their keeper needed a deck chair, cocktail and a book much of the second half. Defensively I thought we looked a mess. Last season, by the end of it we looked well drilled and everyone knew their position. Not in the last week. The biggest problem for me is O’Shea at full back. He isn’t one. When under pressure he drifts to his natural position more centrally and the holes appear. No help from Fatawu, who I thought looked out of his depth despite doing some good thing later in the game. Mick Mills likes him, I’m not convinced. He gave the ball away cheaply a lot, including the two goals. Do that against good teams and forget it. You are done. Our keeper? Not sure. I thought he might have done better on the goals, but they were well struck tbf. Diop and Greaves? Not convinced as a pair either. I felt they needed better cover in front of them - a Matusiwa basically. The ugly: The Premier League is unforgiving. Ruthless. Better teams know how to expose weaker ones. Both Liverpool and MU did so with ease. My guess at Liverpool team talk? Get into them early. Control it, they’ll fold. After that, it’s training night. Had we pinched a goal it might have unsettled them. Defensively when we did attack them, they weren’t all that. Overall: I’m disappointed. I feared the worst and hoped for the best. Sadly it was much nearer the worst. However, all these new players? We look a team of that. For example I watched Palacios looking around for a team mate first half. Less so second. They need time which is why I’ve always been averse to too much change too quickly. GON? Heard his interview. It was very much positive noises for morale as you’d expect. Personally I didn’t like how he set the team out much but given the class gulf he could have put them all out at once and we’d have lost easily. Three points from these games? About what I hoped. We were good v Sunderland and first half against MU, poor since. Run right over. But have much better, more threatening players than 24/25 and better depth. The true test comes next week and against teams closer to where we are, standards wise. Will we be ok this season? Unlike two years ago, we have the potential to be, but that’s about it. It’s up to GON and the senior, better players.

Indeed, the match was dead as a contest after 9 minutes and Liverpool's main concern was keeping a clean sheet which they did with ease despite their supposed defensive frailties. I'm not going flounce like some, but the upcoming games are far more important than the two just gone.

Yeah, there's absolutely no reason to flounce. It's not surprising Liverpool are better than us, afterall. I just have never been able to understand the OP since I've been here. I'm all for optimism but let's call a spade a spade. It's like he's never watched or understood football before. There is one positive - our xGA wasn't at the abhorrent levels it was vs United. Isaak was very clinical. However, we never looked like scoring and Liverpool could play in 2nd gear for the entire 45 mins of the second half | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I've watched a lot of football and Town for 35 years. I know a dreadful performance from a promising one. Yesterday was the latter, even more when you consider that you are playing Amazon on the pitch. We've got some excellent players.

We have more going forward than last time but we should acknowledge that Liverpool were more interested in containing than chasing a third after the break.

That's the cold harsh reality. The first two goals are typical PL. Punished by world class finishes. We could go under then. We didn't. We kept trying to play. If you're going to throw your toys out of the pram because we get beaten by Liverpool then there's no helping you There were real positives in that display. |
Liverpool’s away record last year was P19, W7, D3, L9. Their biggest win was 2-0 at West Ham. This year they drew their away opener Why would we be expecting to lose by a hatful? There obviously isn’t any disgrace in losing against them however the aim has to be to compete and stay in the Premier League, not expecting to get thrashed 5-0 and happy clapping because we didn’t and played ok for 80 mins against a Liverpool side in cruise control

I think this is roughly where I am. Bit disappointed that we started so poorly and then didn't press them enough for 60 odd minutes. With that said, there's no shame in losing to Liverpool really. They are a very good team. The thing that is keeping me positive is that I think we look better than we did last time around. I don't think we would win that Sunderland game for a start. Reasons to be positive but plenty to improve.

We didn't get thrashed 5-0 and they were not in cruise control. They brought a 123 million pound player on from the bench. We played well last night. First 10 minutes two mistakes cost us and punished by world class goals. We kept going and played some good football. If people want to ignore that, fine.
