While we are taking tactics on newly promoted clubs.

They are in a narrow 5-4-1, as clear as a system you will see without the ball. A lot less open space in the middle of the pitch than our games. It’s a true flat back 5 as well, the 3 CBs are than close together are going to win a lot of balls that come their way.

I just don’t see what they are going to do when they concede first goal at this level though lol.

Villa still look quite threatening.

As i said its more about villa than it is hull. Villa should have scored plenty today.

If we put in a performance like this and an opposition fan said “well it’s not really about Ipswich it’s more the opposition were poor” I’m sure you’d be the first person to say it’s unfair.

And btw. Hull had 2 great chances in the last few moments.

Some people just aren't happy unless they're being negative about ITFC. Many of those who had it in for McKenna at various points are the same ones doing the same thing now.

There aren't really enough data points to judge yet that Coventry and Hull are doing it right and we're doing it wrong. We were outclassed last night, for sure. At Old Trafford the Nunez slip totally changed the game, not to mention the dodgy decision and the soft pen that followed it.

I wouldnt mind if villa literally did nothing and simply couldnt break Hull down, Id be agreeing with joe about them. But theyve missed absolute sitters.

I’m genuinely interested (not a gotcha set of questions really) in why people are quite strongly opposed to us setting up like hull (or cov today) against Liverpool last night.

Is it because
- you believe our team can’t play like that / don’t have the players
- you think the established teams are there for the taking if we get at them
- you think it’s embarrassing for us
- you want to see higher xg because there will be log term correlation to that stat
- you think that it’s better to play this way to embed the team and how we will set up for more winnable games
Maybe a combo / maybe something else not listed.
It would help me understand my points of difference with others.
And none of us are top level football managers so it’s all opinion.

Come on, man. Liverpool's xG was low as they killed the game off after ten minutes. The game was over, and they coasted. Do you really think that if those chances didn't go in and it was still 0-0, they wouldn't have created loads more chances?

Like Villa have despite Hull's stupendous defence?

As I said, I agree we need to be more solid but, from the data, there is more that a touch of fortune about their approach. If they can keep It going, good luck to them.

Hull are looking like this season’s Sunderland, which is good for the league.

While we’re trying a different approach, and haven’t done as well so far, it doesn’t mean we can’t praise Hull or that our way is necessarily superior. It’s about staying up at all costs, if we don’t get that right (again) questions need to be asked about our recruitment and strategy, and that won’t be on Hull or their style of play!

I'd like us to be more solid but I don't think Hull is a great example of that, when looking into things more deeply than the scoreline.

They’re not going to win style points but they going to win points.

They have something going. Even that Brooke Norton-Cuffy they brought on at the end looks like he has the attributes and build for a proper PL right back.

They were the more likely winner at the end as well.

Our defenders are not good enough to play a low block against PL teams week-in-week-out. We would just concede less, that's all

GON should be smart enough to use different tactics for different teams. So far I am not seeing it

N.B. Villa looked very poor today though, am interested to see how we fare against them in Nov

Im a firm believer that it wouldnt work across the season and villa shot themselves in the foot for the third game running. Liverpool v hull with isaks finishing. Gakpo etc score those chances.

So based on the question would i prefer hulls tactics no
We need to sort out or defence we know that but i feel our way will get us more rewards and hull will come unstuck when sides begin to take the lead.

They don’t have the talent Sunderland did but the approach building a solid base seems to serve them well.

7 points from 9 that’s a good haul of what they’ll need over the course of the season.

I just hope we haven’t tried to run before we can walk.

The biggest worry I have is we have the tendency to concede multiple goals in minutes, which often changes the entire dynamic of games and more often than not digging us into a hole that is impossible to climb out of

It was the same in 24/25, nothing seems to have changed

I don't see any other sides in the entire division having the same issue
0
Hull watch on 19:30 - Sep 5 with 332 viewsZapatasMoustache

As we’re currently set up, Hull will concede a lot fewer than us but we’ll score more I’d wager. But the point about Sunderland’s negative GD while finishing 7th is important; when and where you score and concede is really important!

Another excellent result from Hull against a team who won a European competition last season. Liverpool didn’t.

I’m sure down voted, but Hull weren’t out of the contest after just nine minutes. I’m sure those that accuse (offensively) folk to be bed wetting will have an excuse. For me, this is how we should have performed. Congratulations to Hull. Signed a great keeper as well. Defensively good. Not a goal conceded to Villa and United.

Over to GON to not just talk the talk. But walk the walk.

Hull FOUR points from Man U and Villa - makes a mockery of the excuses for our dismal defeats on here.

Completely irrelevant to my point. You mentioned Villa's xG today compared to Liverpool's last night. I pointed out that it's not a similar situation.

Also, Hull will be delighted with playing two Champions League clubs and not conceding while neither team got over 1.8 xG. It's a great defensive performance from a team that lacks quality. We conceded 7 goals in the two games against top-5 teams.

I tend to agree it’s probably not sustainable across a season. But part of me feels it would scape a few extra points against very good sides which might make all the difference.
And other sides in history have spent year one in the prem doing this to survive. Maybe feeling their way through the toughest first few games and then breaking out into more expansive football as the season goes on.

Incredibly lucky? They scored two and restricted Man U to 1.8 xG. Their xG was 1.2 themselves. It was an even game chances-wise. They did this while not being a very talented squad.

The point is, they made it hard for them and made Man U work for any chances they got. Unlike us, who just gifted them chance after chance and allowed them to have their 4th-highest xG in 14 years.

Tactically, Hull have been much better than we have so far. Still think we will finish above them by the end of the season.

People won’t accept this but you are correct. Hull manager has nailed it. Sour grapes and of course folk on here love an excuse for conceeding fove at united and laughably losing a home game after nine minutes. But Hull prove it CAN be done. Much much more needed from GON. There is no excuse after watching Hull. It’s clear their manager has much better tactics.

I 100% agree on different tactics against different teams. We have much more talent than Hull, so I wouldn't want us playing 541 all season, but I expected us to be more defensive in the last 2 games. We aren't good enough to beat these teams at their own game.
