| Leno, Lammens and now on 18:27 - Sep 6 with 1392 views | Nutkins_Return | Interesting thing about the Lammens one is it was further out and worse angle and Lammens doesn't even get hands to it. Argument to say Sherpen getting hands to Isak shot actually makes it looked worse for him. Reality might well be most don't get hands there. I think Sherpen was actually more at fault for the second goal. Rest of the game he was excellent. I think there is a really good young keeper there and he will develop into a too class one hopefully. We need to be a bit patient. Van Oevelen could be the real.deal as well though. Hopefully he get into Valencia starting line up | |

Yeah, I think the second one was worse for positioning, as he’d come too far out and caught in no man’s land once the defence had been turned.

You were always trained to shoot low to the far post but I wonder if that's changed in modern coaching. I'm all for it, nothing better than a near post thunder bar steward.

No doubt they still don't like being beaten there but with the speed of these modern balls I don;t think it is anything to do with not being good enough.
| Leno, Lammens and now on 20:11 - Sep 6 with 1250 views | Mullet | The near post thing is very antiquated. You’re dealing with shots at incredible pace and movement now and a game which is so much faster. It’s not the old sodden leather balls of old either - so it’s really outdated that people think keepers should never be beaten there etc | |

The excuses on here are remarkable. You’re entitled to your opinion of course. But for me an average keeper saves that. Hulls keeper saves that. All the pundits agree he should have done better.

As a seemingly Mr know it all what are your credentials as a GK? You seem to think our keeper is always at fault but always quick to point out someone better. The fact you hang off pundits every word says it all for me. I would respect an ex top level keeper giving a view not Jamie Redknapp.

This. Its actually very difficult to get something on a ball travelling fast at high speed very close to you like many of the near post shots are now. If the keeper stands closer to the post to at least ensure body in the way obviously that opens up the shot to the far post much more. As someone that played as a GK for years I know all too well how difficult it is to react so quickly to near post shots as you can't dive to get them its about reaction and sticking out an arm and hoping to get enough behind it. The Lammens one for example, everyone like a Gary Neville will say 'oh the GK should do better' but that was a very well struck shot and almost on or past Lammens before he can react. I just think its so much harder than any GK gets credit for. Pay £20M+ and yes you get a top GK who might just save some of them but not all.

Interested in your opinion here - did you think Scherpen almost dived past the ball? Rather than being able to tip it round the post he almost had to shovel it over

That’s all well and good in real time, but what about in the slo-mo replays when the ball’s travelling slower? That should give even average keepers a chance, Shirley? It’s nuts. I’ve never played in goal and never wanted to, but I’ve been watching the same ball and not been able to track it until it’s in the back of the net. A keeper’s in a better position to react than someone watching from the side I presume, but still. Saving Isak’s first would have been one of the saves of the season. It’s crazy to try and put it down to a keeper error.

| Leno, Lammens and now on 21:52 - Sep 6 with 830 views | DavoIPB | Yep. Modern players and the modern ball bean the ball is past keeper before they can react. Thought our keeper was unlucky with the first but got it all wrong with Liverpool second. Apart from that he has been pretty good this year. Pulled off done very good saves against man U. He quite clearly is out best goal keeper. | | | |

Exactly. Isak is a £125m striker. He absolutely leathered that ball, it was flying, Scherpen did get a hand to it, but you can see by the speed it deflected off his arm/hand that the ball was struck with remarkable pace. Unstoppable. Are people confused because they saw it in slow mo? Second goal he came out before he realised the defender could get across and then he was caught in no man’s land. A definite error. To which he immediately put his hands up to apologise. Back the guy for Gods sake.

It looks like he has dived past it as hits the forearm and goes in. From one of the camera angles it looks like the ball may he moved a little back towards him hence his hand had gone past the ball and hits the arm instead giving the appearance he has dived past it. There isn't an angle to confirm if the ball moved much in the air, but it was travelling and very quickly on him. If you look very closely, as Isak is shooting, Scherpen was on his toes moving round to match the angle of Isak and the exact moment he shoots both Scherpen feet in the air and actually his left foot never touches the ground as he is diving so he has nothing to anchor himself so he may have been a little unbalanced at the time. It looks a mess and can see why many simply say its saveable, A fully confident keeper probably gets it and he is unlucky that was on 6 mins and not 36 mins when he could be more settled in the game.
| Leno, Lammens and now on 22:05 - Sep 6 with 763 views | bluefunk | Quite reasonably, Martinez was looking for the curling shot to his left, relying on his defenders to block the near post shot. They didn’t, but no one is jumping all over them. FFS a keeper has 192 sq ft of a gaol to cover, he can’t do it all on his own. | | | |

Sky did a little interesting piece I think it was at HT on both the goals and in both cases Raya and Martinez were moving the other way from the shots and their weight was on the wrong leg meaning there is a split second where they shift weight before they can dive towards the ball. If they were flat footed at the moment of both shots I bet they both make the saves. These miniscule moments have such an impact and we are talking about two of probably the top 10 keepers in the world at the moment.

Thanks - pretty much my reading of it. I think it must have moved in the air. 2nd I do think he is at fault, albeit the ball got played into a brilliant area. Once he was where he ended up, going back would have been even worse as he’d have been off balance for any shot

Yeah can't excuse him on the 2nd, positioning so very poor. He started so high on edge of box and rather than immediately get back towards line he kind of stayed thinking he may get to the ball through. Was a great ball which curled into Isak path, if it had been straight maybe Scherpen gets it then we all praise his position. He didn't and the rest is history.
