I generally enjoy Sutton, in the way that you enjoy a village idiot/court jester figure. I’ve always liked the way he’ll generally call BS on things rather than fall back on old pro omerta, and I’ve
long reconciled myself to the fact that when he makes his weekly predictions, he’ll never back us to win. But this comment about today’s game is bizarre:
“This feels like an important game for Ipswich after two successive defeats but I don't know why I am thinking they will get a point because that's not going to happen, is it?”
Is it really so inconceivable that we get something from a game against Crystal Palace? I know they’re an established Premier League club now, but if it’s really so unthinkable for a promoted club to go to Selhurst Park and get at least a point, then why are we even bothering with football as a sport outside the top 6?

It's a comment aiming to provoke both sides. The chief aim of a talk radio host, to get everybody engaging as excitedly as possible and thus filling the airtime for free.
After setting a dramatic scene ('important game'), Sutton says two contradictory things: That he is expecting us to get something from the game, then implying that would go against the natural order. It's quite cleverly constructed to draw fans in and get them hot under the collar.

The Norfolk vs Suffolk stuff is par for the course. It’s weird anyone gets cross about it. We (me anyway) go on about Suffolk being much better than Norfolk and I expect them to disagree rather than saying oh yeh fair enough it is. | |

If anyone listens to him as a resident on the Monday Night Club, take note of how Mark Chapman regards him when he goes off on one. He just smiles and puts on a "O come on now, Chris " expression. But he is a good antidote to general ex-pro blandness even if his particular insights sometimes descend into rancour. Incidentally, he's said a couple of times that we controlled the first half against Man Utd. |  |

He just plays the pantomime villain, and although he really bigs it up when talking about Ipswich, he does it with all clubs. As Guthers says, his job as a talk show host is to stir up emotions and generate calls - as they say in showbiz "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
In real life he is probably fairly smart, but we almost never see that - we just see the panto version. |  |

I too quite like Chris The Knob Sutton and his exasperating personality. He's your contrary-mary wind-up pendant but does it in a gentle enough way, and occasionally he breaks character to deliver an interesting thought or two. I'd like him a lot less if he were nice or even-handed towards us. He's a really poor pundit and his analysis is pretty weak in the main. This sort of statement though doesn't annoy me in the slightest as he's playing the character and is a Norwich supporter. It's basically his way of saying maybe a point but can't say it.
He's exceptionally irritating anyway but that's his niche. He will take the opposite stance on a situation whether he believes it or not just to have an irritating debate. But to be fair it can be relatively entertaining at times as well. | |
