What the fair, sane, decent, and humane world is up against: 19:39 - Sep 14 with 2048 viewsZx1988

Sorry I can't find a link that'll embed here, but the Guardian also cover it here:

https://www.theguardian.com/mu

The gist of it is thus:

Macklemore was touring with Ed Sheeran, and spoke out at the Metlife stadium in support of Palestine. Since then, Ed has been forced (or chosen, depending on your stance) to remove him from the tour, after a number of US stadium owners refused to allow the tour to visit if Macklemore was on the bill.

Nothing hateful, nothing anti-semitic, just the mere act of saying 'Free Palestine' on a stage in front of 90,000 people.

Not a prophet, or a stone-age man; just a mortal with potential of a superman.

I think it’s fair to ask whether “Free Palestine” is just a socially and politically acceptable way for Macklemore to express the same base prejudice as he did when dressing up like this.

I see you're going with your usual MO of ignoring the points raised, and just doubling down on your initial position.

The 'Jewface' incident was awful, but I can find no evidence that there was any call for Macklemore to be removed from Sheeran's lineup, because of that incident, prior to him voicing support for Palestine at Metlife.

This evidently has nothing to do with anti-semitism, and everything to do with him voicing support for Palestine.

If it was truly about anti-semitism, don't you think that the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, which is understood to be one of the stadia involved here, would also have refused to platform Kanye West earlier this year, in the face of similar protests?

But no, they didn't:

So you can identify as a Nazi, release a song entitled Heil Hitler, and make all manner of anti-semitic comments and still be platformed. But not speak out in support of Palestine.

"You lot".

"Pet cause".

I'm sure you could be more condescending if you tried but it would be difficult. Saying 73000 dead and 150000 injured in two years is a "pet cause" is awful and that's before you even look at the historical context.

Pretty horrible stuff just because you don't agree with them.

"Saying 73000 dead and 150000 injured in two years is a "pet cause" is awful and that's before you even look at the historical context."

A "pet cause" is buying a few extra pots of jam to support your local WI, not speaking out against an ongoing genocide.

I reckon you could post...

"Ipswich are magic, Norwich are tragic

SB"

...and you'd still get an automatic downvote from some on here.

Pretty sad behaviour

It's been a pet cause far longer than this situation has been going on.

Some people seem to base their entire life around it and are incredibly judgemental of anyone who doesn't base every decision around it.

What a load of toss.

The question I always want to ask is, how do you propose to free Palestine? If it’s to free it from Hamas, I’m willing to listen, if it’s to support Hamas towards its aims, then less so. I suspect this guy falls in the latter category and Sheeran is wise to distance himself from him.

No I agree with J2 actually.

I don’t necessarily think Sheeran should be demonised like some are suggesting because he’s standing by his non-political position. That’s been the case for many years over many things.

Why should someone else making a political statement and putting him in an awkward position of losing millions of revenue and ticket sales and disappointing hundreds of thousands of fans because of the decision of someone else to bring a political cause into one of Sheerans concerts? How is it then fair to blame Sheeran for sticking to the same position he’s been his entire career of not making public acknowledgement for any side on any political issue?

People going after Sheeran here are only doing so because it is a stance against someone pro-Palestine. If Macklemore was saying the same stuff for Israel, you’d be responding differently.

For the record, people (me for example) can think Israel as a country are committing genocide and are a disgrace of a government who all ought to be imprisoned for their actions in recent years with obvious and blatant war crimes, while also believing that people can be allowed to do their own thing if they choose not to engage politically (Sheeran) and bend over backwards for their cause (which is the case here as Sheeran would have to cancel half a million in ticket sales).

J2 is correct in my view.

I don't believe J2's comments are related to the Sheeran angle at all tbh.

I feel the phrase "pet cause" is unnecessary.
Campaigning for a free Palestine is so much more than that and to dismiss it in a flippant phrase is not helpful.
For example, the TUC chose the Palestine Solidarity Campaign as the key note Fringe session at the conference today. Hardly a pet cause. It matters.
Regarding Sheeran's position, it partly troubles me as I would like him to positively use his platform to speak out on this divisive issue, but I equally understand the ramifications of cancelled tour bookings. The wider picture is there is a loss of other people's incomes, so I'm a little more understanding of that.
As for the assertion that artists are putting clauses in contracts that forbid political statements being made and "Quite rightly too", my mind is taken back to events at football club earlier this year where a CEO chose to platform a political leader prior to an election.
I seem to recall some suggested it was a storm in a tea cup at the time, in some way excusing the event.
I can only surmise it depends where your own personal principles lie on such matters.
Personally mine are more Free Palestine than Hello Nige.

"Look, I don't wanna be the same as everybody else. That's why I'm a Mod, see?"

I can understand him not taking a position on Palestine (particularly as he plays pretty vaccuous pop to kids)and wouldn't expect him to but as part owner of the club he should have made some noise about the Farage business and it's damage to his brand as a sponsor. Sometimes silence is complicity.

I think part of the issue is he performed a song with scenes from Gaza playing out behind him. With people of all ages buying tickets to predominantly watch Ed Sheeran perform this is something they were probably not prepared for, and possibly seen as a bit much. Concerts are probably seen by most as escapist rather than pulpits.

Fair enough. I sometimes agree with that too.
I generally see Sheeran as a good egg, so typically give him the benefit of the doubt.
I do get it though.

Seems like this Macklemore is a bit of a be!!end, actually. If he wants to spout his activist guff he can do it on his own tour instead of hijacking Ed's and jeopardising the whole thing.

Free Palestine - activist guff.

I always laugh when people think speaking up or supporting Palestine is a "far left" thing to do. Lots of prominent Right wing voices have done the same.

Very lazy and misguided.

I found myself in two minds on this, but the more I think about it, the more I dislike Ed's position.

Although he's not publicly made any statement, his actions do that for him. He's been told that his tour won't be welcome in a number of US cities unless he de-platforms the chap criticising a genocide, and he's agreed to toss Macklemore to one side.

Even if he publicly states that he is apolitcial, agreeing to demands that he de-platform someone who has been critical of Israel is a political act in and of itself.

Absolute BS

I know you lot need to make your entire identity about Palestine and tell people how much you want them to be free 47 times per day but other people have other things they care about. Some people don't base every decision they make on the latest pet cause.

How offensive and pathetic can you get.
Answer - very
Tens of thousands dead is a pet cause.
