Shame he hasn’t made a stand in support of his friend Macklemore.

Macklemore dropped from Ed Sheeran tour after 'Free Palestine' speech https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

the thing is that libero's: "Being cancelled is a targeted, public withdrawal of support meant to punish someone, whereas consequences of actions are the natural, proportional results of a person's behavior- what Sheeran is receiving is entirely proportional" is meaningless, dishonest wibble. it's a word jumble to justify intolerance. the "consequences" are only happening because of politically motivated performative group think with the intention to publicly shame and at the same time to claim the status as moral superior. it is exactly what is also motivating libero's enjoyment.

Word jumble is exactly what this post is.

and if someone who doesn't parrot back to a group exactly what that group thinks in an approved form is then sanctioned by that group, is that a 'consequence' or a 'punishment' and can you explain the difference? go on try and engage with the content of a post rather than just copy and paste two words form it.

Can you clarify who is being 'performative' with the genocide, and at what point does caring become performative? Just curious so we can all do better and make sure we are outraged, but not TOO outraged.

I've not followed this very closely, but is this (from newsweek https://www.newsweek.com/mackl the full extent of what this guy said?

I know about the really offensive, racist, rightly condemned costume thing from 12 years ago, but is the following speech the whole reason for all of this right now?

'"I said, Free Palestine.

“I want those words to be loud and clear, so the people from Gaza, all the way to the occupied West Bank, know that we have not forgotten them.

"And this next song was inspired by the bravery of Columbia University students who led an encampment movement that mobilized the entire world; open up hearts, myself included, so thank you to those students that risked their diplomas, that risked their tuition, that risked their scholarships, that stood up and said, no. CUAD students, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Jewish Voices for Peace. Thank you, guys.

To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you. My message is for peace; love for all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality.

“So I say Free Palestine, I say Free Lebanon, I say Free Cuba, I say Free Congo, Free Sudan, I say Free all people in America living in fear of this terrorist organization, ICE. None of us will be free until we are all free."
'

If so, wtaf? In the face of the ongoing ethnic cleansing and stated aims of N*t*hy*h*'s ministers how the hell can any decent human being attack this. Shame.

Yeah, this transcript of what Macklemore said was posted previously on ZX's thread on this subject.

From all the information I've managed to gather, Macklemore was kicked from the tour by the promoter (Messina Touring Group)*, after they were put under pressure to do so by the stadiums that would have been hosting the remaining concerts. The main driving force behind seems to be Robert Kraft, owner of the Gillette Stadium (that was due to host the next concert) who encouraged support from the other stadium owners; he gave a statement as to why:

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/

"In a statement, Kraft later confirmed that Macklemore would not be permitted to perform at Gillette Stadium, which Kraft owns. He explained that the venue “has a longstanding commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all guests and ensuring that events held at our venue do not provide a platform for hate speech.”

Kraft based the decision on “recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community.”

I think that last comment is pretty telling; wanted him kicked off the tour not just for what he did at the New Jersey concerts, but what he did in the past too.

*EDIT: And to confirm, in Ed Sheeran's statement he explained that Macklemore was under contract to the promoter, not to him, so not his decision to make whether he remained on the tour or not. Ed's actions after Macklemore was kicked and the rest of the artists withdrew from the tour is of course an entirely different discussion.

targeting sheeran for what he has failed to say has next to nothing to do with what has happened in gaza. it's about how these people want to be seen. so the reaction had much to do with massaging their public image and nothing to affect anything happening in the real world. surely you realise there's a difference?

His reaction to people speaking about Gaza who have been silenced, and him feeding into the narrative of those in power/with strong links to those who defend the atrocity continuing to have their way and ban support for it, clearly is to do with Gaza. Surely you can see that?

Again, for someone who always claims to be 'not against the left', you have a wonderful habit of showing up to comment on anything to do with it, and are often extremely silent on right-leaning issues. Ho hum.

Seems like this Kraft-burk is just wanting to silence the condemnation of murder and ethnic cleansing.

I would suggest the apathy displayed by many on here to the genocide being carried out by Israel is far more performative than any outrage on display. Israel have killed over 20,000 children since the start of the war, and have been found to deliberately target children, if you aren't outraged by that there is something very wrong with you.

It's not apathy, in the same way that calling people out for not mentioning China, Sudan etc. doesn't mean you don't condemn those actions.

However, the term 'genocide' is disputed as is the statement that they deliberately target children.

From the 10 odd pages here it still reads to me that just because ES hasn't openly supported Palestine that he's seemingly the bad guy.

Not a single person on here knows his view on it, or if he even has one.

One quick question - IF he were to walk on stage at his next gig and proudly say "Free Palestine" what would that do for the ongoing conflict, how many lives would he personally save, would the guns be put down, and the bombs locked away? My guess is it would achieve nothing, just as the hundreds of protests there has been in support of it.

edit - those protesting for it to stop arent wrong before anyone jumps on that, that isn't what i'm suggesting

I prefer Roger Waters' take (and his music):

"There's two kinds of people in this world, Ed. There's people who do the right thing, that rapper Macklemore would be one of those people, and there's people, many of them sadly little... pricks like you who do the wrong thing."

Ed's statement is very, very poor and I'm not surprised he's getting some pelters for it. I do feel for him, but he's never shied away from politics before when it was the 'safe' option - i.e. Ukraine (he didn't care about 'alienating' his Russian fans then).

The fact that he was wiling to not take a stand against MAGA/JE associates probably hasn't landed well with those who know him the most. It's quite a statement that his band have quit.

Music and politics have always been completely intertwined, and he has taken stands before, which is why his 'neutral' stance doesn't make sense.

Disappointing, but money talks as we all know.
[Post edited 16 Sep 9:26]

Despite the overwhelming social media narrative of having to take a side on absolutely everything, I can see both on this.

I think Ed's caught between a rock and a hard place. At the moment he's getting castigated for cancelling his friend (which he didn't do, the contract was with the promoter) and getting pelters for looking weak (and at the extreme being called a sympathiser for genocide and the murder of children). If he goes the other way and cancels the tour he upsets all his fans (and probably gets accused of supporting Palestine and being an antisemite).

The support acts cancelling kind of have to for their own morals but also they're not upsetting anywhere as near as many of their own fans as Ed, the headliner, would be. The Irish acts, especially, would probably have a lot of Irish fans who would be annoyed if they carried on.

So Ed either upsets a group like Libby who probably don't like him anyway (or are at least indifferent) or he upsets his own fans, his bread and butter. I can see how that can look the least worst option for him.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
