| When did we last win back to back Premier League games? 11:50 - Sep 17 with 1830 views | _CliveBaker_ | The thought occurred to me this morning, so I had to check. Our relegation season under Burley, 2nd Feb 2002. 24.5 years ago. The game? Everton away. It's an omen I tell you. | | | | |
| When did we last win back to back Premier League games? on 12:15 - Sep 17 with 1721 views | Steve_M | What a weird season that was: one run of seven as good as 2000-21, a lot of utter dross and a whole load of those Premier League games where a team can play quite well for 95% of the match and still lose. | |

Wild to pick up 21 points in a 42 day period and still go down. We were mid table with 13 games left. And Marcus Bent looking like prime R9 for 6 weeks. [Post edited 17 Sep 12:23]

I was taking a look at that season recently and I was surprised how little rotation there was after european games, undoubtedly played it's part.

I was there. Boro away, Alun Armstrong brace against his former club.

Yeah as fun as that European tour was you can't help but feel a nice 10th place finish might have set us up better for the following season.

I used to primarily blame the wholesale change/the fact that both Wright and Scowcroft left and it seemed to change how we started play, but yeah- in retrospect the schedule and lack of rotation despite having a relatively sizeable squad, probably played it's part.

The break followed by a thrashing at home to Liverpool killed it for us. Lost all momentum. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I remember discussions on here as to whether Europe was possible again. Then we lost to Liverpool 6-0 (chasing the game after an early goal) before a 3 week break. That must have snapped the confidence, because we lost 3-1 to Soton at home (that Marsden goal) and fell apart.

For me the annoying thing was watching Charlton spending the next 6 or 7 seasons in the top flight quite comfortably. That could easily have been us.

at one point, didn't Charlton have nearly half our old team? Hriedarsson, Holland, Ambrose, Darren Bent, Marcus Bent...

I do wonder how our future would have panned out had we not been relegated in 2002. Some things are certain, others less so. - wouldn't have gone into administration in 2003 - probably wouldn't have sold to Marcus Evans in 2007 - probably wouldn't have ended up in League One - probably wouldn't have been bought for peanuts by GC in 2021 - probably wouldn't have appointed KMc and experienced 3 promotions in 4 years Maybe getting relegated wasn't a bad thing after all!

should have been 8 out of 8 really as we were 2-0 up away at Charlton and ended up losing 3-2, Boxing Day or New Years, can't remember which.

For me, losing to Southampton with bloody Chris Marsden being given freedom of the park was far more damaging. That Liverpool team were flying at the time, we should have at least given Saints a game. [Post edited 18 Sep 17:16]

It was mixture of things. We sold Wright and Scowcroft in the summer and didn't replace them well. Lost Stewart to injury. Devastating. That was the key moment. Burley fell out with the likes of Wilnis and Naylor. Add to that, Venus, McGreal and Magic a touch too old for the division, you could get away with playing them with good support, but we didn't have the depth. Miller and Counago not quite ready for that league. Bramble turned to turd that season, frankly. Then you had a disaster class of Premier League signings in George, Le Pen, Sereni, Marshall and co. Yet, we still nearly stayed up.

The Bolton game that season still gives me nightmares! I'd been out and about in Barcelona having recently moved there walked into an Irish pub saw the score and new we were done!

Home game against them wasn’t much better. Got in the pub to be greeted with the news that Stewart wasn’t playing and would be missing for ages. Lost and Le Pen got stretchered off.

Wasn't it the other way round? We lost to Liverpool, then had a three week break before Southampton. Think it was due to the international break and the FA Cup.

Yes, the break was probably as bad as the Liverpool defeat.

Indeed, Teddy Sheringham red-carded for punching John McGreal at a corner.
