Accept for his time, Mick Stockwell was comfortably a lower 1st Division standard player in terms of quality. Tabb wasn't quite that level, he worked hard, but Stockwell actually had a lot of quality. |  |

I take it you mean lower Premier League standard in which case I’d agree with you.
Micky was a dedicated pro 557 appearances (over 100 in the Premier League) 44 goals. Played in a variety of positions, he was a cracking player who never let anyone down. He was a far better player than Tabb and at 5ft 9 ins, 2 inches taller too!
Jay Tabb in his 85 odd appearances for us gave his all, but he really isn’t in the same bracket in my opinion as Stockwell. A good punt by McCarthy though. One of his better ones. |  | | |

Not for me Swailsey. On the upside they had guts and a great team spirit and Mick really got the best out of them. 100% ers and in that I can see why you have a soft spot for them.
But I don’t particularly have a soft spot for that two/three year period. For me it was good because it was so desperate before and after. Bit like the relief after going to the dentist. McGoldrick was worth the entrance money - quality. And Murphy, who I liked, had the season of his life. In Bart we had a good keeper too. But the team as a whole was, to be kind, limited.
Most of the football was McCarthyball dire interspersed with some great days out (Charlton and Watford) and the odd decent home performance (10 man Leeds and Middlesbrough- Tabb’s finest hour)
We exceeded expectations by making the play offs, but I never thought we’d get past Norwich who humiliatingly were a far better team than us.
Well done Mick for making something from nothing but the truth of it is that leaving aside the glory years, I got far more pleasure from watching Lyall’s, Burley’s, Royle’s, Magilton’s sides. And of course the special teams McKenna put together. | | | |

I didn't get my own season ticket until Jim's first season, and the latter part of his time, then Keane and Jewell's disaster spells with players not playing for the team, often looking for one pay day meant I didn't really connect with a group of players until Mick's first couple of years. Then there was the nightmare that followed..(until Gamechanger). | |

Yes, I mean the real top league, ha. A quality footballer, as you say, played a number of roles. Had Robson stayed, and Ipswich kept up momentum, he'd have been a regular in our side in the First Division, I am sure of it. | |
