| More trouble in Hampshire 07:52 - Sep 23 with 8158 views | StokieBlue | Protests at Gosport along with "Danny Tommo" out in the channel slashing a dingy with a knife that had a rescue worker onboard. https://www.theguardian.com/wo Rather worryingly there were ~100,000 people watching a live-stream of him doing it. At the protests on land, emergency workers were assaulted: "Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was conducting inquiries into the boat-slashing incident. It said officers had made six arrests for offences including assaulting an emergency worker and aggravated trespass. All six people were in custody on Tuesday night." Also good to see the false narrative about asylum seekers getting given everything they could ever want is still going strong: "Gosport local Dave Palmer, 43, was among the protesters. “We don’t want them in the country at all. They get given everything. I work 70 to 80-hour weeks as an air-conditioning engineer. What does the government give me? Nothing,” he said." False information like this that is perpetually circulated within echo chambers needs to be tackled as well as the actual actions at protests. That is of course easier said than done though. SB | |

The focus on Channel crossings is a classic distraction tactic used by the billionaire classes and certain media outlets to turn people against those less fortunate than themselves. By keeping everyone outraged about a tiny fraction of overall migration, it draws attention away from the real, structural failures affecting our daily lives like the rise of far right extremism, the degradation of our education system and the existential threat of climate change. The real danger isn't the people on the boats, it's the criminal gangs exploiting them and the social media algorithms exploiting people's anxieties for profit My perspective comes from real world experience, not online rhetoric. I am the son of an immigrant, my wife is an immigrant and my boss is someone who was granted asylum. Many of my coworkers, friends and neighbours are immigrants or the children of immigrants. They are incredibly good, hard working people who contribute vastly more to this country than those far right protestors we see rioting or causing disruption. Not to say that my view isn't a passive 'anything goes' liberalism. True integration is a strict two way street. My wife made a massive effort to learn the laws, respect the norms and integrate into the community while retaining her own sense of national identity. I have absolutely zero tolerance for any migrant who brings deep seated, illiberal intolerance with them or rejects fundamental values like gender equality and mutual respect. If someone is intolerant to that level, they shouldn’t be welcome here. The difference is, I want the system to rigorously filter out actual ideological extremism and crush the smuggling networks, rather than using a broken administrative system to whip up blanket fear against everyone trying to come here. Edit: also, there is no world in which the behaviour of these goons can be reckoned with or excused. [Post edited 23 Sep 16:50]

If someone is desperate enough to make that kind of journey, who the heck am I to judge them and call to send them back? It's totally outside my life experience and I think (having visited quite a lot of the world) that they must feel they are in dire need. I really don't begrudge anyone landing here a roof and meal and some due process, especially given the UK's record in destabilising large parts of the global south. The numbers are still very small compared to our population and (ugh) GDP. |
Great post. | |

Interested to know where you are seeing extreme left politics in play? Really is nonsense tbh

He's now been arrested. And of course, his handler, Tommy Robinson has turned up outside the police station and is asking for £100k to support his mate's legal costs. The grift continues...

I live in one of the towns to which a bus runs taking people from the Wethersfield camp. They don't "all get bussed in" and the impact on the town, as far as I can tell, is low. When I go into town later I'll see if there are any terrible things happening that can be attributed to people currently living at the Wethersfield site and report back.

They've missed out the (non-criminal) offence of having a stupid name.

Sadly this will just serve to raise his profile and embolden the people that follow him.

It's almost as if being arrested is part of the plan. He's the victim of the Government etc etc | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The obvious one they have missed is that "causing fear of harm" is one of the explicit definitions in the legislation for Assault in England and Wales. Seeing a protestor against your actions coming towards you with a knife would cause fear of harm to a reasonable person. Being on an inflatable boat miles off the coast, which the protestor slashes, causing it to lose air, impacting it's balance and handling (at the very least) would also cause fear of harm to a reasonable person. The emergency worker just needs to testify that they were put in fear of harm, and it is a pretty open and shut case, given that Tommo has filmed and broadcast the evidence of what he did.

What do you think of racists patrolling the seas and atttacking other vessels, abusing the rnli, visiting youth cricket tours, and balaclavaing up to block up our ports? |
Imo, it's our own fault as a country. We used to hear about Illegal migration through the channel tunnel, with small numbers of people being snuck inside HGVs, this was difficult and could only be done on a small scale. Initially small boat crossings were on a very small scale, it was done covertly. However, when the organisers realised no one would stop them, in fact they would be helped, they no longer had to be careful and covert. By failing to stop the initial small scale attempts, we allowed the organisers to expand and increase the number of crossing and make the practice a viable business. There is no deterrent. And it looks like there never will be. I would have thought Britain could leverage fishing rights with the EU to get them to help stop the crossings and bring the organisers to justice. They are putting lives in danger. As for legal migration, once a person is in a safe country they should have to apply for asylum in that country, then apply to move elsewhere. Economic migrants should have to apply from their own country IMO.
