And the clear dislike of them that the big clubs have:

https://www.theguardian.com/fo

It's a difficult balance, especially after rarer success as we've seen at ITFC. Almost right up to the Exeter match in 2023 it was possible to get a ticket for almost any match at PR with a bit of effort - and now it's not.

And that's just an extended, geographically dispersed fanbase without the tourist fans that Liverpool or Manchester United bring in.

It is a fair article, and as a non season-ticket holder I do think the balance should be equalised.

Season ticket holders get the best seats in the house at a discount, whereas I pay £45 merely for the right to scrabble around for the remaining seats when they do go on sale, and then pay full price for the ticket.

read a tweet a few weeks back where an MUFC fan had a guy next to him, in his banned brothers seat, and the club had sold the ticket for £200 for 1 game.

The cost of his ST was £650ish... flog it 4 times and they are quids in.

If ITFC go that way I will be done with football

Don't want to be rude, but many of us have had those ST seats for decades (more than 30 years in my case). I dread to think how much I've spent on Ipswich, and a fair chunk of that was during very lean times when the football was carp and the stadium was barely half full or worse. I wouldn't say I have one of the "best seats in the house" but there were plenty to choose from when I got mine.

So overall, I'm not sure why you think the balance should be equalised and we shouldn't have those privileges you don't enjoy. I understand people have various reasons for not having a season ticket (weren't born and work commitments being very good ones!) But other than that, it seems fairly fair. And with demand outstripping supply, I'm not sure what an alternative could be.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

A lot of ST holders earned that right when they backed the club in the hardest times and sat through years and years of dross though.

Quite right. I am not a season ticket holder so accept that I have no equal rights of going to matches as those that sat through years of dross, including relegations and third tier football.

Those that have backed the club continuously (in particular the ones in the ground when there was only around 10,000 at PR) deserve priority as a reward for their continued loyalty.

On a similar theme. I've followed nfl in UK since it's outset. I would go to all the London monarchs games, then all the European nfl matches in London and all the nfl London games including the early days of pre season friendlies.
Now nfl is huge in UK. They started the Tottenham games and because everyone wanted to see the new stadium there weren't enough tickets so they said screw season ticket holders and had a free for all.
So I said screw them and just go to one game a season now.
Nfl showed no loyalty because they no longer have to, but now I choose not to give them my money.

My prediction is that within the next 3/4 years one big club will do away with ST and then others will follow suit.

It will be dynamic pricing etc

It's worth pointing out that the discount is reducing.

ST prices went up about 12% in the summer, but match ticket prices stayed the same.

I'm paying £33 per match this season and the matchday price is £38 or £43 depending on the category. Currently still a big difference, but not sure for how much longer.

I’m well aware my views are unpopular but my view is your season tickets in those years gave you entrance to those matches.

I had a season ticket for around a decade. I paid for entrance to those seasons.

I don’t think it should entitle you to discounted tickets in perpetuity. When the demand exceeds supply you can make a good case that season ticket holders should pay a supplement.

I also think season tickets should only entitle you to (say) 17 of the 19 home matches, allowing other more casual fans to attend more frequently.

As the article states the current arrangement makes it very hard for the next generation of fans to attend matches, as there as so few tickets available for them.

Anyway, none of this will happen, I’m sure, so I don’t think season tickets should holders have much to worry about (although their discount might reduce)

Almost all ST holders at PR have held those tickets for many years. The vast majority well into the dire years. We have paid our dues and now deserve the rewards.
Personally having first got mine in 1978 I am happy to sell back the ticket to the club when I cant get there. The system works well and I am pleased to help others and the club.
I look forward to the proposed increase in capacity of the west stand next season. But I also fear when they pull down the Cobbold it will be the last for me.

I agree that that may well be where it's heading, and that that's depressing. In the States, the cost of going to major league matches in various sports is eye watering, and the commercialisation of football in all other respects is highly mature, so it probably is only a matter of time.

But one problem, as your figures illustrate, is that as soon as you make the single ticket prices too high, as a fraction of a ST price, you create an incentive for ST holders to flog the use of their ST for sky high fees. Which would happen, and perhaps already is, despite the fact that we like to think that everyone who has an ST "hasn't missed a game since he was 3".

So keeping ST prices low whilst hiking individual ticket prices is not the solution economically, quite apart from driving a wedge between the many fans that this club has.

Utd, Arsenal etc can probably get away with that given day trippers and the like, we just don't have that pull, also the chances of them getting relegated are slim to none, so they know they can charge a premium, if we were to do similar, the club would lose a large chunk of the local fanbase and there just wouldn't be the take up from others, especially if we're in the Championship.

The only moan about season ticket holders should be the minority who thinks it gives them rights to anything more than a guaranteed seat each game.

Those that think they deserve priority for anything else etc.

I know it goes against the spirit of where football is heading but the scale of discount is possibly too big and I can see clubs simply raising prices so the only incentive is having your seat good to go.

So you think a season ticket holder like myself who's had the same seat for 30 odd years should give it up for a couple of games now that we're in the Prem for someone who wants to go just because we're playing big clubs (not saying that's you, just making the point that it could work out like that)?

I'm obviously biased but I can't for the life of me see how that's right. Yes, if you've kept going (and kept the club going) by continuously paying out for a ST through years of dross, that should entitle you to keep that seat versus someone who didn't. And the discount isn't for years of service anyway, it's because you're committing to a certain amount that the club can plan around.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think that appears to be the direction of travel, certainly for a club of our size and in our situation

Demand is high and has been for a few years now, so the club could actively consider equalising the price of a ST with an 'on the day' ticket but the pull is at least you're guaranteed your seat.

And probably most fans would accept it, wouldn't like it, but would accept it

The danger is what they do if we spend another 20+ years in the lower leagues, they'd need to reverse the policy.

Exactly, if you had one during the Evans era like me I believe I've earned the right for my seat. Equally as well said above plenty of season tickets to be had then and at various other times in our history.
