I have to admit there is something quite cozy in all this as it’s the Manchester City we’ve all known and “loved” over the decades of lurching from one ridiculous disaster to another.

The Prem have a serious problem here.
In terms or proportionality, other clubs have had significant points penalties for a small number of modest breaches. Hard to see what genuine penalty they have available that would be proportionate for hte number of findings.
Expulsion would require a 75% vote I believe- which becomes inherently political.
They presumably cant dictate to the EFL as a separate entity.
What would be really objectionable is a massive points penalty that is meaningless. 100 points, might as well be 65- both equal relegation. Relgation to the Champ means they will be back in 12 months, with no long term damage. | |

If instead of a massive points deduction they are expelled from the PL, then the question becomes "where do they play next season?".
They would need to apply to the EFL, who may well say "no thanks" - and they'd need to gain entry to the EFL via promotion from the Conference. For the number of seasons they have cheated, it would be a penalty fitting the crime, where it would take them several seasons to make it back to the PL, and all their current players would leave. |  |

Another point is the impact on the clubs below if City are just relegated to the Championship. They’d lose many, but not all of their players and could outcompete any Championship club in the transfer market.
I think expulsion from the PL, as opposed to just relegation has to be the way forward.
And the fines better be huge too. Not least for their years of ‘lawfare’ - bringing endless challenges which delay, drain the other side of resources or the will to carry on.

The charges start from the 2009 season from what I've read. So the results of games from that point on are tainted. That's a ridiculous amount of games where the results, points, promotions, European qualifications and relegations could have played out differently in a fair system. There's only thing for it really, we have to rewind all the clubs in maybe the top 4 leagues back to their positions at the start of the 2009 season and restart from there. |  | | |

But I just cannot see this happening. Chelsea got a token fine of £10m for over 70 breaches and let’s face it, punishments go in line with the profile of the club. The Premier League is designed to benefit the Sky 5 or 6 and that’s before you get to expensive lawyers or even politics which given the ownership of MCFC is going to play a part.
My guess it’ll be something like a huge fine, with a quiet promise to reduce it on appeal. There’s too much to lose financially, on the game’s reputation or politically. I think these factors will dominate, sadly
I’d add amongst the bigger clubs they write their own rules and I doubt many of the bigger hitters haven’t pulled every stunt going. It’s a mess. Thats what greed and money does. Any comparison for MCFC to the Summerbee Bell era was always meaningless but given the financial disparity in the Premier, but this exposure has made it even more so.
I fear for the future of the game. It needs a massive overhaul, but I doubt the big boys or those fixed on the gravy train will entertain that. |  | | |

It's £3M for every PL place. So for the 9 years they have been charged with, Potentially every club could claim at least £3M per place. So Everton for example, could claim upwards of £9M per season, that's £81M. If every club from those 9 years claim what they are owed, it would bankrupt them and they would go out of existence.
Add to that the clubs that finished 18th in those seasons, potentially claiming £100M+ for the cost of relegation. And then there are the European sides who City beat, that could be 100s of millions as well.
