Should be a sin bin type of punishment introduced on here?

Yellow card two weeks ban,Red card one month ban.If you come back and are a pain to admin then a one year ban.

When you look back at some of the decent people we have lost over the years,it’s sad really.

Just use the arrow system to vote if you can be bothered.

Have a good day people.

"After all, these threads seem to ratchet up, and there may be others who have played a part in the denouement."

threads that get pulled are often a bit of a team effort. one poster goes over the top, but the thread had usually been heading that way and others had played a part in winding up and baiting and pursuing people. those group dynamics must be hard for phil to pick up on if he only sees the reported posts and the page around them. there is clearly quite a skill in heating up a thread but not being on the exact spot when it blows up.

My opinion doesn't really matter as this is an autocracy not a democracy.

I, for one, am fiercely loyal to dear leader, so you will need to ask him what my opinion is.

Tho there is something of a fine line between making points forcefully in an intense, perhaps emotive, debate and "heating up the thread". May not include terms of personal abuse, but still can raise the temperature.

But there is no doubt that a bit of heated debate gets viewers, a two pager quickly turns into a five pager and the views go way up, like you say there is a line, I'm surprised we haven't a mod or two on here, no doubt Phil has to work his way through a long thread time and time again, it's usually the political threads that cause him the grief..

as an example, from an unrelated thread today:

"Maybe our somewhat hysterical posters who initially berated the player and are now berating the official, might pause until that’s available. And their ignorant lapdogs might do the same."

is that "making points forcefully" or an attempt to "heat up the thread"?? and if the thread concerned ended up in a melt down, will phil go back to that (seems to me obvious) effort to bait others for the fun of it?

Interesting that you pick that comment up, as opposed to this one from this thread, just as an example, if you're worried about people heating up the thread....

"Luckily the 10 keyboard warriors on here don’t talk for the entire fanbase even if they think they do. Look at the state of some of them, don’t post anything or even talk about football but lurk on threads if anything pops on politics, basement dwellers, def info."

The phrase confirmation bias came up on the forum earlier, as it happens.

ok, and is that one "making points forcefully" or attempting to "heat up the thread"??

is it possible that both were intended to bait?

There’s an informal one in place already. This seems to happen from time to time and Phil lets people back. I’m not sure you could put timelines on things though, as it depends on how bad the banning offence is.

I would agree with general point that some posters bait others, but its definitely a two way street and not just the lefties.

If I had a quid for every comment I've started replying to, but deleted it as realised I was getting sucked into the nonsense, I'd have a lot of quids.

No, the problem is more entrenched than just individual behaviour.

There is a schism in society reflected here. Certain political topics will bring it to the fore. It's then not the most political people who are the "usual suspects", it is those who passionately believe the behaviour of those on the other side is wrong. There is a dance around the flames until someone steps into the fire. Last time it was SitfcB (who is not even a strong political poster), it could have been any of two dozen. It is 100% impossible to police, this is not like football arguments where someone just gets a bit drunk/abusive and is easy to spot.

This will just go away and then come back again forever unless politics is banned from the board. That's my recommendation. Difficult to define what is political and what happens when a non-political thread turns political of course. Up to the admins. It's the least worst option though.

It's a last resort. I think we've reached it because I can't see how it ends otherwise.

One side think they are behaving well and the other aren't and vice versa, so who defines bad behaviour. It's not blatant t&c rule breaking. As admin, you cannot possibly police it even if you had time to read every post in every thread and every dm that must inevitably follow.

board admin decide who's breached (and re-breached ad nauseum!) the rules.

there's plenty of people who can debate constructively, i'm glad that those who can't are no longer posting.

banning something, just because a few can't behave is ridiculous

"There is a schism in society reflected here."

This. X 10.

I trace this all back to the brexit campaigning, which was all based on tribalism, them vs us, one team or the other. And that style of politics has been at the fore ever since, particularly from leaders on the right (Trump/Farage/Johnson etc).

As you suggest, that has now become the norm in society too, and it is a bloody terrible thing.

It's why I try (mostly) not to get into the really spikey stuff on here, as I don't want to play that game. This isn't me being holier than though, I have my moments, but it's a really sorry state of affairs where people who would otherwise get on about most things, end up at loggerheads because the politics means they are steered to do so.

I actually think what you say applies perfectly to the football board or any other general debate.

I just think certain, but not all, political threads bring out the schism of how some people would say what good and bad behaviour is and others don't, how some people see what constructive debate is and other don't. What is offensive, what is free speech, what is hateful speech etc etc etc.

We see certain topics starting a thread and increasingly people say "there's your 10 pager". We all know what that means, it's going to go south.

Absolutely it changed after Brexit. It's literally like the country went through a 25 year change over the course of one referendum. The Cameron years are like a lost world.

I think about it quite a bit and it's difficult to grasp 100%. It's about politics, but not all about politics, it's about left and right, but it's not the traditional left and right. They almost become meaningless terms now.

But anyway back to the board, of course it would be a shame to lose political debate but just hand on heart, I don't see the 'schism' healing any time soon so that's just my view on it.

i offer this in a spirit of peace and harmony. you reference politics based on tribalism and cite trump / farage / johnson. none of which i would disagree with. but someone coming from a different political angle would equally point to tribalism, but instead cite the left's swing to identity politics and race based politics which was not pronounced 10 years ago. so, there being a schism and a growth in tribalism is probably common ground, but its origins and the form it takes is disputed and depends on where you start.

I was going to add a disclaimer that those on the right would probably view things differently to me, so I don't disagree with that principle, but we're ultimately still in the same mess.

I won't say too much about my job, because there are idiots on here that take things too far, but suffice to say that I deal with people of almost all political persuasions, and they are all just people at the end of the day. I find I'm easily able to get on just fine with all of them. We don't need to be adversarial with everyone all the time!

I was actually thinking much the same. Corbyn should have been on that list. There was a definite purity test on here when he became a party leader. Tories were suddenly the new nazis. If you voted Tory at any stage of your life then ll of a sudden you were accountable for every decision made by those governments.

I know and get on with quite a few "left leaning" posters on here. As recently as last week I was having a drink with a few of them pre Everton. I don't think the same has happened with the newer wave of lefty posters, post 2015.

Once people had different political opinions but got on. Now they don't. Adversaries became enemies. And it's back to the purity test.

A prime example. Somebody, who will remain nameless, was slagging off Benters a few months back. I posted that I'd still rather have a pint with benters than I would [redacted]. What followed was post after post of "You're mates with a racist", 'You're judged by the company you keep", "Glasgow's pet racist" etc.

Sometimes I think about the frothing lunatics I’ve put on ignore, who will have kept replying to me again and again, but I don’t even realise they exist.
