| Ronaldo on 10:52 - Sep 30 with 1562 views | MattinLondon | Without doubt he has a massive ego but that what drives him on the pitch. From what I’ve read he also does a lot for charity. He’ll reach 1000 goals - if he wasn’t so obsessed by that he would realise that he’s past it internationally and that Portugal are better off without him. Still an all time great regardless of personality. | | | |
| Not really…. on 11:11 - Sep 30 with 1535 views | Bloots | ….he is (was) one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game. Many “modern” footballers have flawed personalities in one way or another, it shouldn’t impact or reflect their on-field legacy. His desire to win and single minded “selfishness” undoubtedly made him the fantastic player that he was. Personally I think that in his prime Ronaldo was better than Messi, but that’s just my opinion and not one I need to force onto others. | |

I don’t see him as a great. His selfishness and ego have cost his country dearly in recent years and a great would be able to put the collective before themselves in a team sport. Also can’t overlook some of his more serious off-field antics whatever work he’s done for charity. He had the potential to be a great, but he’s become a bit of an embarrassment with the tears and tantrums.

He’s an all-time great. He just is. He can be selfish but a lot of great players are fully capable of that characteristic.

The whole Messi v Ronaldo debate is quite tiresome and pointless. Both all-time greats but also different type of players.

A lot of it was media hype - comparison between sports men and women is often futile. "My orange is better than your apple"

| Ronaldo on 11:53 - Sep 30 with 1320 views | mellowblue | Would be funny, but he is guaranteed, nailed on certainty to do it due to playing in a camel farming, oil drilling league. If that gets tough there are always worse leagues to move to. Be interesting to see what his next step in life will be, post football-retirement, he has a 25% share in Almeria , but that is only a staging post to something bigger to match his gargantuan ego. | | | |

it was a fabulous rivalry when they were both at their peak though. To have 2 such talented icons performing at the same times in the same league was pretty unique.

For me, the levels of consistency which both of those players have had to perform at is simply ridiculous. I know that modern football gets criticised a lot on here but in order to be at the top, those players can’t have many off-days.

He's done a lot of good with his money, even if he plays like a knob and gets people sent off on the pitch.

so have many billionaires, be rude not too. To be fair to him, I was impressed that a reason for not having tattoos was so he could regularly give blood and bone marrow. Did not know tattoos impacted that ?
| Ronaldo on 13:33 - Sep 30 with 1086 views | J2BLUE | No, he is an all time great. He deserves to go out on 1000+ Messi has an edge to his personality as well. Most very successful people do. | | | |

I don't think that it is pointless with regards to these two, because there is a genuine argument here that the actual question is 'Who is the greatest footballer of all time?'. For most of my life that question was straightforwardly between Pele & Maradona - with the greatest of respect to Cruyff, Puskas, Best, van Basten, Ronaldo I & Zidane - but once Messi & Ronaldo emerged as rivals, the quality of their play, the sheer number of goals, the consistency over more than a decade at the very top, has placed them squarely in that company, and probably above it at this point.

He doesn't have 'potential'. Deary me. It's absolutely fine not to like the man. But we might as well just forget about football if we are deciding Ronaldo isn't a great. He's in the top 5 all time without any possible/reasonable debate. His career and numbers re staggering and he has been sensational to watch for more than two decades. The man and the player are two different things. He is undeniably a footballing great. With an legitimate argument to be the greatest of all time. Not for me. But he has the CV.

R9 has to make the top 5 to be fair... Best ever: Maradona Messi Ronaldo Zidane R9 Favourite to watch list: Ronaldinho R9 Maradona Messi Zidane Obviously Pele should be in there but before my time.just couldn't quite get Stewart on there. Someone is going to say someone I've so obviously missed as well.
