| Queues on 16:00 - Oct 10 by The_Flashing_Smile | We arrived about 20 before kick off and it did seem worse than before. Was expecting it to be better by now. Just made it for a wee and kick off |
I also arrived 20 minutes before ko, OK, but didn't make it until 5 minutes into the match. OK, I could get there at 2:25 instead of 2:40, but the queues in SAR were far worse than at other matches. I can only put it down to the digital tickets and security. SAR is by far the biggest stand, so comparisons with SBR, Cobbold and West stand don't really relate. SAR has a lot of people to get in, and lots of people missed the start.

You sure the SAR is the biggest stand, I thought the order in capacity was West Stand 8700, SBR 7500 and SAR and the Cobbold around 7000.

If the queues were worse, I can’t see why you would put that down to digital tickets and security … which are presumably unchanged. More likely is that fans are going “well, there weren’t long queues last time” and on average all turning up later.

That just feels like too many people arriving close to kickoff. We sailed in 20 minutes before you - security queues were 2 or 3 deep, and took a minute to get through and there were no queues for the turnstile.

What does my head in is how pointless the security checks are all of our group set off the wand thing they wave over you (I assume due to coins or keys) but were all just waved through, so why bother.

| Queues on 19:18 - Oct 10 by BackToRussia | Why the f*** is anyone downvoting this? It's clearly not good enough. It is ok to criticise the club when they aren't doing their bit properly. Jesus, you can see why feudalism endured in Suffolk. |
Also not everyone lives 20 minutes from the ground, if you’re travelling like I often am, and by car, by the time you’ve dealt with the umpteen roadworks on the way, the town traffic and parked your already running behind. It’s not so bad on Saturday at 3, because you don’t need to get up early to make everything work, but midday kickoff is brutal for those travelling.

| Queues on 19:37 - Oct 10 by Suffolktractor | I agree, it is the security staff not the new fangled entry system that is the problem. They are so slow and there is not enough of them. An old boy I front of me in his seventies had to empty each pocket and then turn around to have his back scanned as well. Is that really necessary? |
It’s not the security screening in the cobbold stand as the security staff were scanning people significantly quicker than fans were going through the scanning system. In fact they were having to pause fans joining the scanning queue to stop choking up the area by turnstiles.

There are two choices: A) search everyone B) profile people. On the positive side "70 year old Suffolk Buhs" skip through. On the negative side, it could get a bit Apartheidy. More security staff is probably the solution. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Queues on 21:40 - Oct 10 with 1126 views | flykickingbybgunn | Half an hour wait to get into the Cobbold today is not acceptable.. Who ever is in charge should be sacked. Get someone in who can organise better. New ticketing is having an effect in slowing it down. Scanning bodies is having a bigger one. Do we really need that ? I have been coming to PR for 60 years and nobody has blown me up or stabbed me yet ? Or is this H&S gone mad ? | | | |

Point taken re apartheidy, but thinking more ageist. Ultimately more security guys is the answer, but when things get busy just show a bit of common sense.

| Queues on 14:58 - Oct 10 by LegendofthePhoenix | No, this isn’t normal. Digital tickets meaning lots are not able to show their ticket, and not enough security staff |
Been to both Saturday home games and had no problem whatsoever. Why be are people not able to show their digital ticket? If they can’t do that they can’t get in!

Agreed. The West Stand turnstiles are absolutely shambolic. Really needs to be sorted out.

No one had ever blown up tube trains or taken the roof off a bus in the 60 years prior to 2007 either. Can't be that hard to understand surely? Premier League games have a global audience so are perceived to be a more likely target. It's not H&S, it's counter terrorism. [Post edited 10 Oct 22:35]

Behave, it's Ipswich v Fulham there is no terrorist threat. It's all performative nonsense they wave their wands at you and then let you through depending on how busy or bored they are.

To be fair, no-one thought an Ariana Grande concert would be a target...

It forms part of a risk assessment. Is there a risk (no matter how minimal) of an attack of some kind. The answer is yes, at a low to medium risk. If anything on a Risk Assessment has potential to occur then the company/individual/club/any other of other businesses has a legal responsibility to put mitigations in place, in this case a check inside bags and a cursory waive of a wand. If the club fails to do this and something happens resulting in death then the club will likely be charged and convicted of corporate manslaughter, and killed politically and morally. If a weak wave of a wand misses it then the responsibility falls on that individual steward and the company who employs him. I deal with this stuff every day. It really isn't performative.

Talking of concerts, why do football fans seem to think that their 'thing' is an exception. If you go to a concert or a show, you'll turn up in good time and make sure you're seated well in advance of the start. Why should football be any different? I agree that the security operation is crap, though. My phone stayed in my pocket, set off the wand, and didn't get a second glance. I probably could have told the chap I'd just swallowed a load of anthrax, and was going to let off like mad by the directors' box.

People tend to miss the point of why security scanning exists. It is primarily a deterrent. Plenty of good reads/research on this. One of the key takeaways is : ”By creating an immediate psychological barrier, visual checkpoints force potential bad actors to reconsider or alter their plans.” The mere presence of people scanning massively reduces the risk - why would a bad actor risk being the person who does get scanned, and discovered.

I had a funnier one than that. The security woman said my rucksack was too big... so I folded it in half and she said it was fine!

Based on that logic we should have security checks on everybody, everytime they leave their house as they might do something bad. To be clear what happened at the Ariana Grande concert was an abomination and I'm not belittling that tragedy. [Post edited 11 Oct 1:02]

I quite often go to West End Shows. Arriving 15 minutes before curtain up is ample time to get in and use the facilities. It's all very well people saying "arrive earlier" but the problem seems to me to be that plenty of people are in the fan zone early enough, but they are not encouraged to go through the turnstiles to their seats early enough. So massive queues start to form around 1430 when everyone who arrived early and everyone who have just arrived all attempt to go in through the turnstiles at the same time. I don't know what the solution to this is other than doubling the number of turnstiles. It was never a problem when everyone who arrived early for the fan zone had already been searched and there were seperate turnstiles for those arriving later. A further problem is tucking away some of the turnstiles and the Southern end. The ones at that end are difficult to queue for because the beer tent and car park are in the way. It's impossible to queue fairly at the moment as the queues are not disernable for each entrance.

No one is suggesting security checking people when they leave their house, don't be so silly. They are suggesting checking people as they arrive at a venue where there could be mass casualties.
