So yes..I’d say so….. not exciting… but functional and sensible for right now where we are in the world domestically and globally …next one will be more controversial I suspect.

That's surely the definition of a decent one? Nothing that's going really ruin any thing over much. In other news, Moscow Nige was apparently expecting someone to offer him outside if he turned up today. Which is a new excuse for not showing up to do his job. https://www.huffingtonpost.co.

| Good budget ? I thought so on 19:00 - Oct 28 with 1790 views | Whos_blue | The last two responses are almost straight out of Badenoch's mouth. "We all know why he's delayed until tomorrow difficult decisions he should have taken today. It is because the Prime Minister wants to keep the option of an early general election open, putting his party's interest before the country's." | |

I think it had to be. Very little wriggle room for Healey at the moment. Badenoch's script writers got a couple of good gags in her response. The gherkins one was a paticularly good one. That said, the Shadow Cabinet seem oblivious to the fact some, though not all, of the financial plight sits with decisions they made when in power.

| Good budget ? I thought so on 19:34 - Oct 28 with 1618 views | Perublue | As an aside…that bloody deputy speaker irritated me today, she seemed to think it was her show and kept ruining the flow of both the chancellor and the leader of the opposition with pre planned ,cliched quips as well as using a comment at least twice that I caught regarding members children which was a little disrespectful and below the belt. | |

| Good budget ? I thought so on 20:04 - Oct 28 with 1552 views | J2BLUE | It looks like a pre-election budget. Some Lord (Lib Dem, I think) sent a memo to their leadership saying he thought there was a 30% chance of an election on 10th December. Seems very unlikely to me but I could see them calling one in Feb for four weeks later so they can put some of the changes in the Spring Statement. | | | |
| Good budget ? I thought so on 20:28 - Oct 28 with 1446 views | Pinewoodblue | A bit of a non-event but scope for change limited due to determination to stick to manifesto. Should we have an election, next spring, expect a totally different approach. If you really want to help those on lower income you need to increase tax allowances, paid for by an increase in basic rate. With neutral impact on total income tax raised. | |

| Good budget ? I thought so on 21:31 - Oct 28 with 1262 views | DJR | As once one myself, the people I feel sorry for are those drafting the Finance Bill. This from Sky's Ed Conway. "Two key snap charts on the Budget... 1) in sheer numbers of policies, it’s the “busiest” budget in modern history. 98 different scorecard measures(!) 2) BUT the average VALUE of those measures was the smallest on record. Every little helps? Or too much fiddling? Views may differ On the measures in the Budget, I am not sure the increase in income tax on property income by four percentage points at the basic, higher and additional rates from 6 April 2027 is such a good idea. This is the OBR's take. "These measures collectively risk leading to a steady rise in rents through two effects. First, potential landlords are less likely to enter the market, reducing long-run rental supply, which risks a steady long-term rise in rents if demand outstrips supply – which we think is more likely than not. Second, landlords are likely to pass on more of these costs to renters in the long-run through a combination of some current landlords leaving, thereby giving more price setting power to remaining landlords, and greater long-run flexibility to raise rents. Such rises in rents would offset at least some of the reduction in the commercial viability to landlords from the measures introduced in recent years." [Post edited 28 Oct 21:33]

| Good budget ? I thought so on 08:10 - Oct 29 with 864 views | Churchman | Really? I didn’t see it as much if anything beyond tinkering around the edges. Maybe a non-budget is the best form of one. Budgets are outdated anyway. If something needs doing, put it to the HoC and do it. Why store it up to a couple of points in the year? There’s no need given how this works in practice. Same with ‘manifestos’. I hear plenty on income tax cannot be raised because of the manifesto pledge, yet I don’t recall Blair/Brown’s policy of scrapping immigration rules and opening the doors to unlimited immigration in the late 1990s being in any manifesto. Election promises or objectives are fine, but I don’t see why governments should wed themselves to them and ignore when it suits them. Same with referendums - there’s no obligation to enact a result if the whole question asked was complete nonsense in the first place. That’s what happened with Brexit. A decision based on no information whatsoever beyond a lie scribbled on a bus and an empty promise. Lastly, the Chancellor. Healey is a liar and a political opportunist. In June he said a proposed settlement for the defence investment plan (DIP) "falls well short of what is required for defence and the country at this dangerous time. In a resignation letter, he said the prime minister had been "unable" and the Treasury "unwilling" to "commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats". (source: his words and the BBC) How noble of him. Or maybe not. Once Sir Kier was booted out, the man of principle slithered into the next biggest job in government as fast as you like and hoofed the defence can down the road even faster. His actions or inactions were for precisely the reasons that he resigned over. There’s no excuse. He lied. What he was actually doing was unhitching himself from dead-man-walking Starmer for his own political gain. That’s why I’m not interested in what Healey has to say. I’ve read the released details and of course hope this tinkering improves things for a few people, but I’m not holding my breath. Nothing of importance seems to have come from it. That suggests to me all Labours efforts, as they have been for months, are being plunged into an election next spring, or earlier. | | | |

| Good budget ? I thought so on 08:53 - Oct 29 with 765 views | Swansea_Blue | I’m a bit miffed that he seemed to price in potential earnings from the Rosebank oil field despite it currently being ‘debated’ by cabinet (lol). That’s not a direction we should be going in, although I suppose several alternative parties would be ripping up any support for renewables so it’s probably the lesser of two evils (and not solely a Treasury decision either, although it makes you wonder if the pressure is from the Treasury and purely a financial decision). Otherwise, steady as she goes innit. There’s not much help for those of us in the middle, where fiscal drag still contributes to stalling real incomes. But we can muddle by, unlike the poor dabs at the bottom. The Small Business rate threshold rise must be good for some on here though. | |

I am not sure any of the budget measures impacted me at all! Ah, VAT on electricity bills... Looks to be like there will be some fiscal leeway for a giveaway budget well before any election.

I have a collection of Grumpy T shirts, Grumpy mugs etc. brought back from Florida over the years by family members. One year daughter held up a Grumpy t shirt and asked Grandson if Grandad would like this? It was given the seal of approval. Later he explained why I would like it. I already had one like it needless to say it was changed.
