| We are so close to being very very good 17:09 - Oct 31 with 2016 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | But the reason we are currently below a fairly rubbish Hull side tonight on GD (that have no where near our talent) is because of second half’s like that. Low IQ football from Davis, O’Shea and Walton at 1-0 on the road. Should really never have been a basketball game, loads of good but I’m not convinced we will ever keep a clean sheet after watching that. Their equalizer reminded me of Wrexham’s opener last year (but worse). Walton on the Free Kick, standing basically behind his wall, unreal. We have so much talent and result is ok but that was a disappointment when you see how close we are easily disposing of the likes of Hull. First half was men against boys. Should win games you dominate for that long. They had nothing until we let them. | |

| We are so close to being very very good on 17:39 - Oct 31 by jas0999 | Our attacking play is excellent. Our defending has been sub par all season. Not a single clean sheet … nor looked like getting one. That has to improve quickly. Do we have the right personnel at the club? Kipre? Greaves? Will we need to strengthen at CB in the transfer window? Walton questionable again today. We’ve spent so much on keepers as well. |
It won’t happen but it’s interesting to think that maybe an great winter transfer window would involve buying yet another keeper, a cb that would displace our captain and possibly even a lb that would displace Leif. Such are the levels needed in the prem.

O’Shea and Davis weak defensively and Walton got found out again. We have some real talent there thou and we missed Lukic again sadly. |
What got us here won’t get us there, as someone once said.

Feels like thats not a bad result, but it isnt a great point. I do worry about us at the back and atm I'd have Clarke or Maeda ahead of Philogene. The latter offers that extra coverage on the left, great foil for Leof imo

Leif has been absolutely fine this season, and was one of the best players (clearing two off the line) just one game ago. One poor game and some are saying get rid!

Leif is fine 1. Needs the right lw partner 2. Needs to stop being hung out to dry by his managers.

I think he was agreeing with you. We completely outplayed them in the first half and we should have won, but we let them into the game with some sub-standard defending. That said, we don't have a god-given right to beat Hull. I think that's the point he was making. That's the most frustrating bit for me, we did enough and more to win the game, but the first goal gave them so much confidence and handed them all the momentum. Fwiw, I agree totally with your opening post.

Davis is an amazing recovery defender and truly one of the best full backs in the country going forward, but he’s not fantastic situationally at times.

You can cross Spurs off that list. 1-0 up against 10 men Palace. Everton are yet to play and have a better points per game ratio than us. That list is going to get smaller as the season progresses so we need to make the most of the opportunities presented to us. That said, the second goal looked good to me so at 2-0 I don't think Hull come back.

| We are so close to being very very good on 17:37 - Oct 31 by Nthsuffolkblue | Isn't it refreshing to be able to complain we have a couple of defensive players who aren't top Premier League players instead of complaining we haven't got a Premier League striker or midfield (or anything close to it) at all? I am sure there are areas we need to improve on but we are miles ahead of where we were before. There will always be things to complain about but I, for one, am quite happy with where we are as a club right now. |
Considering we went into the season expecting 5 at the back and to try and win games 1-0, and having actually done the opposite and still amounted a pretty satisfactory number of points, I agree.

That's the thing. We haven't spent much in keepers. Hull, Tzolakis £20 million and Coventry, Rushworth £22 million have though. We paid £8.5 million for Scherpen.

I’m not saying get rid I’m saying that a transfer window is always for strengthening and that I expect the recruitment team that looks to get palacios in does not look at a single member of our team, and particularly the back 5 as areas that can’t be strengthened. For what it’s worth I think Leif needs a much stronger back up. To keep pushing his game and act as a back up if he is not 100% or game conditions suit it. Ouattara was maybe able to do that but now looks like he will be our permanent right back. I can honestly only see us buying players if we expect them to be starters at this point really. I think that’s a reasonably fair point. [Post edited 31 Oct 18:29]

I don't want to pile on Leif because he does so much good even when he has one of his lesser games, but if he hadn't moved to the right just before their free kick, he would have blocked the shot. That said, the wall resembled a slice of gorgonzola cheese. Bloody embarrassing.

Leif is an interesting one because his good defending is more about his athleticism getting back than actual smart defending one on one or positionally. He’s obviously such a threat going the other way but I don’t think he’s near the levels of our new RB personally in terms of defending or composure.

I like him for 20 minutes then not for the rest) Lcb option of high high standard Fatawu. So hot and cold. Walton. Not going there. |
We have bridged the gap better but there is still work to do, you don't become a fully fledged PL squad in one window O'Neil will be learning a lot about his players Defence is where the least aggressive recruiting has been done and still needs some work, need competition for Davis Philogene is talented but isn't going to get much joy out of our system, he would flourish in a non-big five European league in a side who dominate the ball I suspect we are going to need a return on the likes of McAteer, Mehmeti, Taylor, perhaps even Nunez in January and to reinvest that in a bit more PL quality The building blocks are here and it's been a good start, there is work to do

If maeda had played he has the intelligence to cover Davis plus O'Shea was absolutely horrendous back up any further he would have been in the stand.

Good post. And it was a good window for us and now after the first games it’s becoming clearer and clearer where we can improve next. I’ve criticised some of our players today but make it be known that I support them all and I don’t criticise their work ethic. We are evolving and the defensive unit certainly needs some attention.
