Thats a fair point. Just takes us back to where we were around a year ago. Not exactly seismic.

Won't make much difference if you're reliant on a pension, that will inevitably be linked to the performance of the global stock markets. If you've got loads of cash savings, it will make a difference.

Yes, & in the 80's many moved into cash to take advantage of the high interest rates. Where would you get 15% with no risk on the stock market?

You wont get 15% with no risk anywhere, and certainly not from the banks anytime soon. 15% rates would make for a very lazy population.

Interest rate hike on 12:56 - Nov 2 with 4187 views | J2BLUE | I locked my mortgage in for five years a year ago. It was a good deal and I couldn't see anywhere to go but up. Looks good now if there is going to be another couple of rate rises over the next couple of years although the saving is obviously fairly minor.

This is up there with Dolly's wish for a housing market crash in the 'daftest thing ever wished for on TWTD' stakes.

I locked mine for 10 years. Kinda wish I'd done longer.

Er, that was what happened in the 80's before the bankers crash.

That's not really true is it. There were a few periods where interest rates were that high due to various things I doubt you were finding risk free products at 15% consistently in the 80's. SB

Yep, whats your point? 15% interest rates would discourage investment, why take a risk when you can make 15% in the bank? You'd struggle to find VC / PE funding, they'd all just leave it in the bank. Its all about the circular flow of income.

People love using the '15%' statistic. In the 1980's the base rate was at or above 15% for about 5 months over the whole decade. http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/boeapps/iadb/Repo.asp

There were banks offering that in the 80's Just as there were banks lending business at 25% it may not have been for long periods although it must be remebered that the governemtn of the day trie to use interest rates to curb inflation (who was it who said the government was a one lub golfer?) & of course then there was the massive overnight hike in Sept 92

Why is it daft for a non home owner to want prices to go back to a reasonable level?
