I take pleasure in the fact that it clearly still winds him up even after 20 years. So bitter.
Im also glad managers like him who play dull pragmatic physical football are being overlooked now. Allardyce, Moyes, Pulis (although still working outside the prem he not done well this year), MIck, seem not to get a look in even when teams are struggling.
funny that, he seemed happy enough when they were 3-2 up, smiling and laughing !
commentary from granada TV so also very biased. Never mind Whitlows red, Ritchie should have gone seconds earlier for his assault (on Reuser i think). When Ritchie did go for his second yellow, how the pundits couldld have ignored his pullback and said he just stumbled beats me!

Not only that but when we were celebrating on the pitch afterwards Paul Ritchie ran straight into me on his way to the tunnel...ref ignored it!
I've always believed that Allardyce went a long way towards losing Bolton that game by sending them out far too fired up. Dean Holdsworth was on an Allardyce high right from kick-off, and he was just the worst of a number of Bolton players.

I think he felt that he had to play a thought game after Town bettered Bolton in the second half of the first leg, completely out played them.
Whitlow was a yellow card, not a red. Every other decision correct.
One decision for Bolton was the free kick award for Holdsworth's second. It was not a foul.
What those highlights don't show are the challenges Whitlow also got away with
Take in mind you could get away with a bit more back then but Bolton were an absolute disgrace, they totally lost the plot. The sheer amount of harassing the referee on the night only made things worse for that Bolton side. They certainly did not deserve any pity.
Allardyce, the fans and the team can blame the referee all they like but the buck stops with the team and culture Allardyce had developed to lead to scenes like that.

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
Always baffles me this. The penalty for throwing Johnson to the ground possibly wasn’t but the rest was all blatant. We should have had a penalty at their place the year before too.

Yeah, I think this is a big part of why it haunts him. Their 'game plan' was an active decision by him and it backfired. He can't blame the players (for following orders) and he isn't going to admit his own failings......so.....

They were a good side too, packed full of talented players.
He got it so wrong that night and has built up this narrative about it
