Jam spread in an even layer and then a big lump of cream is right, right? Made some with junior and this seems the best.

Also I'm not interested in the usual shenanigans, it's pronounced scone, not scone.

By happy coincidence I had one yesterday, and that’s how I did it. But the Mrs said the cream should go on before the jam. She’s Welsh though, so easily confused.

The cream looked a bit excessive to be honest.

And also, have you changed the pronunciation from scone to scone since you've been living up North?

Scone needs to rhyme with gone otherwise THE joke doesn't work.

It's always been scone.

In my defence, clotted cream is stiffer than I anticipated and it seemed right to just whack it on like that.

As in 'real gone scown'? Thinly spread butter and a good whack of ginger preserve is the way to go...

For me they have to be warm and covered in butter and nothing else.

Also, it's pronounced scone.

The CREAM is the BUTTER so goes on FIRST, with the JAM going on TOP. That is the CORRECT way of doing it. Anybody who says differently is a complete s#1*f&"!8%)+@£.

Blatantly wrong. Jam spreads easier directly on the scone.

Anyone spreading jam on a layer of cream is clearly a half wit.

Cream and butter are different entirely.

Why would people butter a cake?

Also, fruit or no fruit?

And its scone, as we say in Shrewsbury.

The same as you would butter toast before adding the jam. The Cream is the Butter substitute.

What about the beloved Jamaica Ginger Cake? That is a cake which demands butter. Also fruitcake is nicer with butter too :)

Fruit, slightly warmed. Definitely scone. The French pronounce it scone, so that must be wrong.

Totally agree, Pecker. Clotted cream first, dollop of jam after. Makes for better presentation too. (Not that that really matters as I've usually scoffed the plate of them in seconds)

Another thing to consider is if spreading the jam and cream, won't there be cross-jar contamination between the two? Teaspoon in the jam jar, spoon/knife for the cream.

Arghhhhhh.........

It has to be jam first and then cream. I can’t imagine trying to spread jam on top of the cream.

J2 has it right for a change. Never thought I would say that when talking about food and J2 in the same sentence

Us people down south pronounce it scone of course.
